Gazdag, Lappalainen score goals to help Crew beat DC United 2-1
Lappalainen, who signed with the Crew in January after six seasons with Montreal, scored his first goal of the season to make it 2-1 in the 79th minute. The 26-year-old midfielder put away a loose ball from near the penalty spot with a first-touch finish.
The Crew had 58% possession and outshot D.C. 18-6, 6-1 on target.
Gazdag drew a foul, conceded by Lucas Bartlett, in the area and converted from the spot to open the scoring in the 31st minute.
Christian Benteke scored his first goal since May 5 in the 48th when he flicked a header from the center of the area into the net to make it 1-1.
Columbus (12-4-8) lost 3-0 at Nashville on Wednesday to snap a five-game unbeaten streak.
D.C. (4-13-7) is winless, with six losses, in its last seven.
The Crew are unbeaten in five straight against D.C., which went into the game with a minus-24 goal differential this season, worst in MLS.
Defender Aarón Herrera was shown his second yellow card in the 89th minute and D.C. played a man down the rest of the way.
The opening whistle was delayed about 45 minutes due to inclement weather.
The Crew honored Guillermo Barros Schelotto prior to the game. The forward, who was named the 2008 MLS Cup most valuable player while he helped Columbus with the MLS Cup championship, became the fourth player in club history to be enshrined as a member of the Crew Circle of Honor.

Synovus CEO says ballpark name change coming, just not sure when that will be
COLUMBUS, Ga. () — It was announced late last week that Columbus Synovus will be merging with Pinnacle Financial Partners. One of the questions that has been repeatedly asked is what will happen to the name of the ballpark with the Double-A Columbus Clingstones play? WRBL News 3 asked Synovus Chairman, President and CEO Kevin Blair that question during an exclusive interview on Friday. He said the merger process was at the very beginning, and it was too early for a definitive answer. 'Obviously, if we are rebranding Pinnacle, we want to make that park Pinnacle Park. It is some alliteration to it,' Blair said. The merger with Nashville-based Pinnacle is expected to be finalized in the first quarter of 2026. At that time, Synovus will take the name Pinnacle Bank. Blair, who will be the CEO and president of the merged companies, says the name rebranding process could take 12-14 months, which means it will likely be completed in 2027. Synovus purchased the naming rights for what was formerly Golden Park from the Clingstones ownership group, Diamond Baseball Holdings, last year. Both sets of players remonstrated with the referee after the match, with plenty of fans online making the case that Cincinnati should have been awarded the dramatic game-winning goal. After the match in South Florida Saturday evening, PRO — the MLS referees organization — issued a response to reporters backing up their decision to rule out the goal. "The referee observed a foul committed by #12 Miles Robinson of FC Cincinnati against #32 Noah Allen of Inter Miami, making clear contact with the face," the statement read. "The referee delayed the whistle the allow the opportunity for VAR to review for a possible goal. After a VAR check, the referee's decision was confirmed." Cincinnati head coach Pat Noonan remained level-headed in his response after the goalless draw, but nonetheless confirmed that he believed the goal should have stood. A win would have seen Cincinnati remain in first place in the Eastern Conference and the Supporters' Shield race.
