For the first time, politicians, govt, and military united — and that unsettles some, says Mohsin Naqvi
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has dismissed speculation regarding the removal of President Asif Ali Zardari, calling such rumours baseless and driven by discomfort over political and institutional unity.
'For the first time, politicians, the government, and the military establishment are united—and that bothers some people,' Naqvi said while addressing the media in Sukkur on Saturday.

Responding to a journalist's question about circulating claims of President Zardari's removal and constitutional amendments, Naqvi urged restraint from political debate during Muharram.
'It would be a good thing if we refrained from politics for two days. Do not believe everything on social media,' he added.
Naqvi was in Sukkur to oversee security arrangements for Muharram processions. He said more than 2,700 processions were taking place nationwide, with Sukkur hosting the largest in the country.
'Credit goes to the entire team for managing Pakistan's largest procession,' he said, expressing confidence that all events would conclude peacefully by evening.
When asked about deteriorating law and order in Sindh's Shikarpur, Kashmore, and Kandhkot districts, Naqvi acknowledged the situation and assured that coordinated efforts were underway.
'Just like we pushed back terrorists in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, we'll deal with the dacoits in Sindh as well,' he said. 'The federal and provincial governments will act together to resolve this issue.'

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has warned that any form of religious incitement on social media will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Naqvi reiterated the government's commitment to maintaining peace during Muharram and countering threats across all regions.
"InshaAllah, Ashura will remain peaceful thanks to the efforts of the government and the tireless dedication of our security forces," Naqvi stated.

Iraq interested in ferry service, rice import
ISLAMABAD: Iraq has informed Pakistan that it was ready to welcome a ferry service between Umm Qassar Port of Iraq and Gwadar Port of Pakistan aimed at strengthening maritime cooperation and exploring new sea routes. During a meeting between Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, and a three-member delegation from the Iraqi Embassy in Islamabad, led by Deputy Head of Mission Abdulqadir Sulyman Alhimiri here on Wednesday, Iraq has also shown interest in importing Pakistani rice owing to the best quality. The Iraqi delegation said that by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the start of a ferry service between the two countries will not only facilitate pilgrimages but also provide safe and secure travel to other tourists. Official sources told Business Recorder that the government of Oman in principle has agreed with Pakistan on the start of a ferry service between the two nations from Gwadar port. Chaudhry described it as 'a new chapter' in bilateral relations, emphasising that maritime passenger and cargo links could build on expanding economic ties and religious travel between the two countries. The federal minister highlighted that Pakistan can meet Iraq's Potassium Sulphate needs, as a manufacturing facility already exists in the Gwadar free zone. He also sought Iraq's support ahead of Pakistan's planned participation in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) elections, receiving assurance of backing from the deputy mission head. The IMO is a specialised agency of the United Nations responsible for regulating international shipping. Its primary purpose is to ensure the safety, security, and environmental sustainability of global maritime transport. 'The ferry connection can leverage our shared cultural and religious bonds while unlocking new business opportunities,' the minister said, underscoring the potential for increased port activity and supply chain expansion under Pakistan's blue economy strategy. The initiative to enhance maritime connectivity comes amid growing cross-border religious travel as in 2024, over 88,000 Pakistani pilgrims visited Iraq for the Ashura observance, a number, both countries view as a strong foundation for establishing regular sea links catering to both pilgrims and traders. Minister Chaudhry informed the delegation that Pakistan is also working to set up ferry routes with Iran and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and a similar arrangement with Iraq could complement these plans, fostering a regional maritime network that meets both economic and strategic goals. The minister proposed expanding goods trade by boosting Pakistani exports of medicines, meat and rice to Iraq, while increasing Iraqi oil imports into Pakistan, which could help elevate bilateral trade well beyond current levels. Data for the fiscal year 2024 show Pakistan's exports to Iraq totalled $54.29 million, while imports from Iraq primarily petroleum products amounted to $145.46 million. Analysts note these figures are modest considering the market sizes and mutual interests of both nations. Iraqi Deputy Head of Mission, Abdulqadir Sulyman Alhimiri expressed strong support for the minister's proposals, calling the maritime sector a 'key enabler' for future collaboration. Pakistan, Iraq agree on maritime ferry link to boost trade, tourism
Pakistan and Iraq have agreed to launch a ferry service connecting Umm Qasr Port in Iraq with Gwadar Port in Pakistan, in a move officials say will strengthen maritime cooperation, expand trade, and facilitate religious travel. The understanding was reached during a meeting between Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry and a three-member Iraqi Embassy delegation led by Deputy Head of Mission Abdulqadir Sulyman Alhimiri, the ministry said in a statement. Terming the MoU a 'new chapter' in bilateral ties, Chaudhry said passenger and cargo links could capitalise on growing economic ties and religious travel. He noted Pakistan could meet Iraq's potassium sulphate requirements through a manufacturing facility in the Gwadar Free Zone, and sought Baghdad's support for Pakistan's candidacy in the upcoming International Maritime Organisation (IMO) elections. Pakistan grants first-ever ferry licence for routes to Iran, gulf countries The minister proposed expanding Pakistani exports of medicines, meat, and rice to Iraq while increasing Iraqi oil imports to Pakistan. According to official data, Pakistan's exports to Iraq stood at $54.29 million in FY24, while imports, mainly petroleum products, were $145.46 million. Chaudhry said the ferry link would complement similar initiatives with Iran and Gulf Cooperation Council countries, potentially forming a regional maritime network under Pakistan's blue economy strategy. Alhimiri voiced strong support for the proposals, calling maritime transport a 'key enabler' for future collaboration. Both sides agreed to carry out feasibility studies to assess investment needs. Officials noted that more than 88,000 Pakistani pilgrims travelled to Iraq for Ashura last year, underscoring potential demand for regular sea routes serving both pilgrims and traders. If realised, the ferry service could lower transport costs, improve logistics, and enhance access to broader Asian markets for Iraq while boosting bilateral trade.
