New chief constable pledges ‘exceptional policing' on first day
Alexis Boon has joined the force from the Metropolitan Police, where he led commands in local policing, specialist crime and counter terrorism.
His arrival follows former chief constable Scott Chilton's departure after the Echo revealed he was facing a probe for not disclosing a past relationship with a junior officer.
Mr Chilton quit in April after being told he was under investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct for gross misconduct.
Speaking on his first day in the role, Mr Boon said he is keen for the force to focus on listening to and working with communities in the county.
'Engaging with purpose will help us prevent crime and bring more criminals to justice', he said.
He added: 'I joined policing because I firmly believe in public service.
'I know the exceptional officers, staff and volunteers across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight share my commitment to be there for our communities, especially when they need us most.'

Police and crime commissioner (PCC) Donna Jones said she has urged Mr Boon to continue the improvements recently outlined in the PEEL report by His Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services.
She added that his 'wealth of experience' will be a huge advantage to the force.
She said: 'We are a large force but we are still under capacity for the amount of officers we have for our communities.
'Recruitment is a major priority and I've urged Alexis to ensure the officers I have already funded are on our streets as quickly as possible.
'We are both clear that our aim, going forward, is to drive up charge rates, protect communities and get more bobbies on the beat.
'Together we want to make Hampshire and the Isle of Wight the safest places to live, work and visit.'

Illegal vapes and cigarettes worth millions seized in police operation
A council has revealed that more than 480,000 illegal cigarettes and 26,856 illegal vapes have been seized as part of a police operation. The BBC report has highlighted the ongoing efforts of the Newport City Council's trading standards officers, who have been working in conjunction with law enforcement to tackle the sale of illegal tobacco and vaping products in the city. As a part of their efforts, the officers have been working with landlords to ensure that only tenants with legitimate businesses are renting their properties. Operation Firecrest, which began in October 2023, has resulted in 87 seizures of illegal tobacco and vaping products throughout the city. The seized goods include 481,790 illegal cigarettes, 26,856 illegal disposable vaping devices, and 199.05kg of illegal hand-rolled tobacco, which is equivalent to 199,050 cigarettes. In total, the seized items are equivalent to approximately six million cigarettes, with an estimated value of around £1.85 million. Driver caught speeding at 46mph in 20mph zone The BBC accompanied the team as they carried out their work in various parts of the city, including a shopping district where five premises were previously selling illegal tobacco and vapes. All of these premises were taken to court, where magistrates issued closure orders. Two of the premises have changed their use, one is currently vacant, and another was recently closed down. A fifth has reopened, but is now believed to be trading lawfully. As part of another operation in 2023, a network of illegal tobacco sellers in Commercial Street was identified. This led to the removal of a significant amount of products from sale, and a residential address was raided where cannabis and cash were found. Five shops were subject to closure orders, and three individuals were charged with fraudulent trading, to which they later pleaded guilty. Councillor Mark Spencer, Newport City Council's cabinet member for communities and sport, said: "The illegal trade of tobacco and vapes is harmful to our residents and those communities where it is taking place. "We will not tolerate it in our neighbourhoods or our city. "I would like to thank our trading standards officers for their continued fight against these criminals and the partners they work with including the police and National Trading Standards. "Closure orders can only be for a limited period which is why the officers have been working with landlords. "We are grateful to those who have taken their advice in relation to the type of tenants they have and urge others to be vigilant. "We would welcome changes in the legislation which would strengthen the action that can be taken against those involved in the illegal trade and the premises they operate from."

Vancouver police renew call for information into 2023 stabbing death on Granville Street
Vancouver police are asking for public help as they continue to look into the stabbing death of a Surrey, B.C., man two years ago. Jose Kaze, 32, was stabbed on Granville Street between Smithe and Nelson streets just before 3:30 a.m. on Aug. 4, 2023. Just over two years later, police say they believe there are witnesses to the crime who have yet to come forward. "We ... know that the Granville Mall continues to be busy at around 3 a.m., especially on weekends," Const. Jason Doucette said Wednesday. "We are confident that people around the area would have seen something." Doucette said Kaze was killed near the Roxy Cabaret, and witnesses who have already spoken with police reported there were other people around at the time. "Two years has gone by. This is somebody's son. This is somebody's partner," he said. "We need you to do the right thing and come forward and share the information," he added. "A little piece of information could put this investigation into full gear, and we can hold the person accountable who did this." Doucette said police have been in touch with Kaze's family over the last two years, and victim support services are available for anyone who was "living with something that [they] saw for the last couple of years." He's asking anyone with more information, including anyone driving by that day in August 2023, to come forward to police. "There would have been an altercation. You would have seen lots of emergency vehicles. Any little bit of information could help us break this case," Doucette said.

Man caught on video repeatedly exposing himself outside Liberty City home, landlord says
A Liberty City landlord is raising alarm after surveillance cameras captured a man repeatedly exposing and touching himself outside a home she rents to a mother and her daughters. The disturbing behavior has allegedly been happening for nearly a year, and the most recent incident occurred early Wednesday morning. "It's not the first time he's done it," said the landlord, who identified herself only as Rose. Rose said the man has been seen on video touching himself outside a bedroom window of the home on Northwest 58th Terrace. Her surveillance system, which alerts her to movement in the yard, has captured multiple incidents—including the one that happened around 2 a.m. Wednesday. "When I came out and I confronted him, I was like, 'Yo, are you the guy that keeps (explicit) off—I mean, relieving yourself under this window?' And he was like, 'No, that's the kid, he went that way.' I'm like, how specific that you know what I'm talking about. I was like, you're wearing the same outfit from the video," Rose said. The man's repeated visits have left Rose concerned about how far he's willing to go—even with full knowledge that cameras are rolling. "He knows that this property has multiple cameras in every angle, but he still comes between 10 p.m. to a little over 2 in the morning. What is he doing to the houses that don't have cameras?" she said. Rose also recalled catching the man jumping the fence to the side of the house during a separate incident, heightening her fear for the tenants' safety. The City of Miami Police Department confirmed it is investigating the matter and said officers canvassed the area after the latest report but were unable to locate the suspect.
