Saba Yemen19-02-2025
Sana'a - Saba:
Experts and researchers have stressed the importance of establishing a specialized and advanced system to enhance the productivity and quality of coffee, strengthening its competitiveness in both local and international markets by leveraging its unique characteristics and long-standing reputation.
During their participation in the Coffee Business Clinic, also known as the "Consultation Tent," as part of the Sana'a International Coffee Exhibition, they highlighted that the clinic aims to provide information, guidance, and advisory services to exhibitors, including farmers, trading companies, exporters, university students, and researchers.
Dr. Amin Al-Azab, senior expert at the National Center for Coffee Research, explained that the clinic, managed by a group of academics, researchers, and coffee specialists, operates in two key areas: one focused on commercial coffee marketing and entrepreneurship, and the other on coffee seedling cultivation, care, and production.
He noted that the clinic offers consultations on seedling production, coffee tree cultivation, pest control (both in farms and storage facilities), proper harvesting and post-harvest handling, marketing, exporting, and even launching small-scale coffee businesses. It also provides guidance on evaluating coffee quality, identifying different coffee varieties, and understanding the unique processing methods for each type.
Dr. Al-Azab added that the Coffee Business Clinic also covers key aspects of roasting techniques, production processes, and challenges facing coffee farming in different regions. This information helps establish a precise and detailed database on coffee cultivation and production across various provinces in Yemen.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Rashid, Director of Coffee Affairs in the Dhamar Agricultural Sector and a supervisory team member, stated that the clinic focuses on providing guidance from variety selection to post-harvest handling, covering planting seasons, farming techniques, and best practices for coffee production and marketing.
He emphasized that these guidelines help protect farmers from losses by educating them on proper agricultural methods and ensuring adherence to best farming practices suited to different regions.
Engineer Rashid also underscored the importance of holding a seminar after the conclusion of the Sana'a International Coffee Exhibition, bringing together farmers, exporters, local traders, agricultural associations, and coffee business stakeholders to discuss key outcomes and strategies for developing this vital economic sector.
For his part, Mohammed Hassan, President of the Union of Coffee Producers' Associations, described the Coffee Business Clinic as an essential educational and advisory platform aimed at increasing production and improving quality to enhance market competitiveness.
He highlighted that the exhibition features various promotional activities, serving as an opportunity for the public to learn about Yemeni coffee products and facilitating knowledge exchange among participants. The event has attracted over 250 representatives from leading companies, associations, and coffee producers, as well as institutions involved in the coffee trade.
It is worth noting that the Sana'a International Coffee Exhibition, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources, in collaboration with the General Corporation for Coffee Development and Marketing and funded by the Agricultural and Fisheries Production Promotion Fund, includes promotional activities to spread awareness of Yemeni coffee culture and highlight the significance of coffee cultivation.

Yemenia Airways Begins Selling Tickets in National Currency Amid Economic Reforms

Aden,— Yemenia Airways has officially begun selling airline tickets in the Yemeni rial, marking a significant shift in its payment policy aimed at easing travel access and supporting national economic stability. The move comes as part of broader efforts by the internationally recognized government to reinforce the use of the national currency in commercial transactions and reduce reliance on foreign currencies amid ongoing economic challenges. In a statement issued by the airline's management, Yemenia confirmed that ticket sales at its offices in government-controlled areas will now be processed in Yemeni rials, based on official exchange rates set by the Central Bank of Yemen. The policy is expected to benefit thousands of travelers who previously faced difficulties purchasing tickets priced in U.S. dollars. 'This decision reflects our commitment to national priorities and to making air travel more accessible for Yemeni citizens,' the statement read. Travel agencies and booking offices have begun updating their systems to accommodate the change, while the airline urged passengers to verify pricing and payment procedures before booking. The announcement has been welcomed by economic observers and civil society groups, who view it as a step toward restoring confidence in the national currency and improving transparency in the aviation sector. Yemenia Airways, the country's flagship carrier, operates flights to regional and international destinations from hubs in Aden and Seiyun. The airline has faced operational challenges due to the conflict and fragmentation of financial institutions across Yemen.

Vice Prime Minister Chairs Meeting on Role of Mineral Sector in Supporting Local Development

Sana'a - Saba: A meeting chaired by Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Local Administration and Rural Development, Mohammed Al-Madani, and attended by Minister of Oil and Minerals Dr. Abdullah Al-Amir, discussed the role of the mineral sector in supporting local and rural development. The Vice Prime Minister emphasized that mineral resources are among Yemen's most important economic assets, requiring optimal investment to strengthen the national economy and achieve local development. He highlighted the need to utilize all national resources, including mineral wealth, efficiently and avoid waste caused by disputes over authorities and competencies. Al-Madani stressed the importance of balancing the distribution of mineral revenues between central authorities and local governments. The meeting, which included Governor of Amran Dr. Faisal Jumaan, deputies of the Ministry for Local Administration and Community Participation, rural development sector representatives, and legal advisors, also discussed a proposed amendment to the Mines and Quarries Law, aiming to allocate a portion of mineral revenues to support local and rural development projects. Al-Madani underlined the importance of raising public awareness about the significance of mineral resources in supporting both central and local economies, describing them as national wealth that should be invested in development and service projects. He also called for practical solutions to obstacles that hinder mineral investment, announcing that a workshop will soon be held to develop proposals for the optimal utilization of this vital resource. Minister Al-Amir described the mining sector as promising for Yemen, despite past mismanagement that exposed it to looting and control by influential actors. He stressed the need to align the interests of local authorities with those of investors. The Ministry has prepared a draft law amendment defining the roles of the General Authority for Geological Survey and Mineral Resources and local authorities, ensuring the state's rights at both central and local levels. The goal is to protect national resources and prevent the waste of mineral wealth, which is crucial for economic development. Governor Jumaan highlighted challenges with crushers due to disputes over jurisdiction and revenues, calling for practical solutions to ensure optimal collection of this resource. The meeting emphasized the need to establish a national mineral resources database, enhance trust between central and local authorities and investors, and allocate part of mineral revenues to community development projects. Discussions also covered issues of unskilled labor, licensing, investment, and environmental impact, with a focus on finding appropriate solutions. Specialists and officials from the Ministry, the Geological Survey Authority, the Capital Secretariat, and the governorates of Dhamar and Sana'a participated, reviewing the mandates of the Geological Survey Authority, the economic role of mineral wealth in community development, the establishment of service and development projects, and the creation of employment opportunities.
