Work at squash club makes it more accessible
Work to make a Lincolnshire squash club more inclusive has nearly been completed.
Grantham Squash & Fitness, on Harlaxton Road, received £35,000 from South Kesteven District Council's portion of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund after showing how the changes would make the building more accessible.
Club chairman David Goodridge said it wanted to encourage more people of all ages and abilities to use the facilities and become more active, both socially and physically.
"We regularly turn down inquiries for events which may involve elderly or infirm people simply because two staircases are involved, but this improvement will make such a big difference to what we can offer the community," he said.
Mr Goodridge added: "We completed the first stage of this wider project last summer when we installed electric entrance doors and two internal doors to provide easier access to the gym, toilets, sauna and squash courts.
"What we're doing now is making our function rooms upstairs easily available to those with more limited mobility – or parents with pushchairs and prams – so they can join in the various classes and events hosted here.
"The lift will also allow people get to the squash court viewing galleries more easily."
The lift work is due to be completed in this week.

PC spared jail after sexually touching victims
A trainee police officer found guilty of sexually touching two women on a night out has been sentenced. Charlie Valente, 24, from Leeds, was given a two-year community order with 200 hours unpaid work at Leeds Crown Court. The West Yorkshire Police student officer was found guilty in May of three counts of sexual touching following an incident in November 2022. The force said Valente had been suspended from duty pending a misconduct hearing. Passing sentence Judge Andrew Stubbs told Valente: "You were drunk, boorish and believed you were untouchable as a sexual predator. You felt in a position to dominate the victims. "One of the victims was so drunk she did not know what was happening, but you continued even when she showed she was not interested. "During the trial, one of the victims described the impact of your actions on her personal life that she has been having to rebuild because of what you did to her, so these are serious offences." He told Valente that he "may seem sorry now, but he didn't seem sorry for what he did" during his trial. However, he noted that Valente had "matured considerably from the drunken 22-year-old he was" at the time of the incident. As well as the community order, he was told he would have to carry out a 90-day alcohol rehabilitation programme and 20-day rehabilitation programme. He was also ordered to pay £8,000 towards the cost of the case. Speaking after Valente was found guilty, Det Ch Supt Tanya Wilkins said: "What was reported to the police by the first victim was a pattern of behaviour by this student officer over the course of a night out that has made her extremely uncomfortable, including unwanted sexual touching. "As part of our enquiries, we reviewed CCTV and established that there was also a second potential victim. "She was identified and spoken to and again confirmed that she had not consented to the sexual touching she was subjected to." Police investigate alleged attack after fox death
An investigation is under way into a report that a fox was attacked after being hit by a car. A vehicle is said to have hit the animal on Dorchester Road, Hull, at about 22:50 BST on Saturday. Humberside Police said it received a report that, soon afterwards, another motorist removed the fox from the middle of the road and tried to kill it. The force said "a volunteer from a wildlife rescue group attended and the fox was subsequently transported to the vets", but it died. A spokesperson for Hull Wildlife Protectors said it was "deeply disturbed" by the incident, which happened near the junction with Ilchester Close. They said it was contacted by a member of the public who remained at the scene until volunteers arrived. When they got there, the "visibly upset" caller told them that some people had got out of the vehicle and dragged the fox off the road by its hind legs. One of them got a knife from the vehicle before cutting the fox's throat and leaving the scene, the wildlife group said it was told. The spokesperson said: "Despite this brutal action, the fox was still alive when HWP volunteers arrived." The animal died on the way to a veterinary surgery. The BBC has been shown video footage of a fox with what appears to be a large wound to its throat. Police are appealing for witnesses or people with footage to get in touch with them.
