Mo Salah wins PFA Player of the Year as Nottingham Forest show up Man Utd and Man City at awards
MANCHESTER was the location for this year's PFA awards — although there was a noticeable lack of representation from the two local clubs. It was the third time this glittering bash — previously staged in London — has been held in the north-west city. 4 4 And incredibly, for the third time in succession, there was not a single Manchester United player in the men's Premier League PFA team of the year. It sums up what a mess it has been at Old Trafford recently. You have to go back to 2022 for the last United player to feature in the line-up and, even then, it was left to Cristiano Ronaldo to fly the flag for the club. There were also no players in the team of the season from Manchester City, illustrating what a disappointing year it was for Pep Guardiola. Yet if the opening day of the season is anything to go by, City's players could be in the conversation for awards at the end of this campaign. And despite Sunday's 1-0 loss to Arsenal, there were still some hugely encouraging signs at Old Trafford for United supporters. Maybe Benjamin Sesko will take English football by storm too, having arrived from RB Leipzig. What seems certain is the PFA team of the year in 12 months' time will not include a United keeper - unless they sign a new No 1, which looks unlikely. Frustratingly for supporters of both City and United, it was Liverpool 's players who arrived in Manchester to bask in the glory of being at the very top of their profession. 4 4 Mohamed Salah became the first player to win the award for a third time after another brilliant season helped Arne Slot win the title at the first attempt. Unsurprisingly, Liverpool had skipper Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Salah in the team of the year. Cheeky Mo Salah reveals Liverpool's Premier League title felt way better without Klopp, Mane and Firmino Salah, 33, had 29 top-flight goals and a career-best 18 assists as he claimed his fourth golden boot and second Premier League title for the Reds. Also in the top XI — as voted for by fellow Premier League players — was Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez who is now at Anfield. One person desperate to head to Merseyside, too, is Alexander Isak — and he featured in the dream team after a terrific season on Tyneside. For Nottingham Forest to have keeper Matz Sels and forward Chris Wood selected was a reminder of what a stunning campaign they enjoyed. Arsenal, who again finished second, saw William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes and Declan Rice picked. It was no surprise none of Arsenal's forwards made the final XI, though. Maybe, Viktor Gyokeres could feature next time, yet he will have to do better than in Sunday's 1-0 win. Arsenal's PFA success At Manchester Opera House, Arsenal did have some success as Spanish star Mariona Caldentey was overall women's winner. With the closing date for the PFA awards now June 8 — rather than mid-March — members are able to give a much better, balanced vote. The previous event in London was a sit-down dinner often in April, so it did not reflect the entire season. After taking over as PFA chief exec, Maheta Molango scrapped the boozy dinner and replaced it with this 90-minute show in a theatre. Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers was young player of the year, while Burnley's James Trafford — who has returned to City — was Championship player of the year following 29 clean sheets. Unbelievably, he conceded just 16 goals in his 45 games. The evening also saw Gareth Southgate and Emma Hayes pick up special PFA merit awards.

Alejandro Garnacho sticks to his word as Man Utd receive new offer for Chelsea target
Manchester United outcast Alejandro Garnacho has his heart set on a move to Premier League rivals Chelsea this summer, after falling out of favour under Ruben Amorim Alejandro Garnacho has backed up his promise after turning down a move to Bayern Munich. The Argentine is surplus to requirements at Manchester United after falling out of favour under Ruben Amorim. However, Garnacho has previously made it clear that it is Chelsea or nobody as he risks missing out on a move before the end of the window. The Blues are keen to sign the forward, but remain around £10million away from United's valuation. The Red Devils want around £40m for the 21-year-old, with Chelsea - thus far - failing to go beyond £30m. Garnacho is part of the bomb squad at Carrington, which also included Marcus Rashford before his move to Barcelona. He hasn't played a competitive match since going public with his frustrations after starting on the bench in the Europa League final against Tottenham in Bilbao. He said back in May: "Up until the final I played every round helping the team, and today I play 20 minutes, I don't know. "The final will influence [my decision] but the whole season, the situation of the club. I'm going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens afterwards." Stamford Bridge bosses have already spent big this summer, signing Jamie Gittens for £48.5m, spending £65m on Joao Pedro, paying £37m for Jarrel Hato and sanctioning the £30m transfer of Liam Delap. But Enzo Maresca is still in the market for more firepower and would like Garnacho, with the player similarly desperate to make the move. But the Premier League giants are unable to make any further incomings without sanctioning exits first - which had opened the door for German champions Bayern. The Times report that Bayern explored the possibility of signing Garnacho, but were quickly informed he only wants to sign for Chelsea. Bayern had previously been linked with Christopher Nkunku, who Maresca is happy to sell this summer, but saw a loan offer rebuffed. They want a permanent sale on the books and could yet get their wish. The Athletic report that the forward's former club RB Leipzig are stepping up talks to re-sign Nkunku in what would be a permanent transfer. Nicolas Jackson could also help bolster Chelsea's transfer kitty, with Aston Villa ready to go head-to-head with Newcastle for his signature. Chelsea want around £60m for the Senegal striker who has fallen down the pecking order thanks to this summer's business. Manchester United and Arsenal had been linked previously, but a Premier League switch could still be on the cards. Maresca is hoping for a busy end to the window with not only Garnacho arriving and exits completed, but also the acquisition of a new defender. Levi Colwill is set to miss the majority of the season after undergoing surgery on his ACL and although there are options behind him, Maresca made it clear he wanted different options. "I think we need a central defender,' he said last week, 'We are looking for an internal solution but as I said, the club know exactly what I think." Asked again after their opening day draw with Crystal Palace, the Italian said: "You like to talk about central defenders? I already spoke. Thank you very much."

Alejandro Garnacho SNUBS Champions League giants as Man Utd rebel demands Chelsea transfer or nothing
ALEJANDRO GARNACHO has snubbed a move to Bayern Munich as Chelsea push to agree a deal with Manchester United. Bayern made an approach over a move for the exiled Argentine this week but were knocked back. 2 United value the winger at around £50million, using Noni Madueke's move to Arsenal from Chelsea as a benchmark. The Blues believe Garnacho only wants to join them this summer, but talks have laboured over the asking price. Chelsea are reluctant to meet United's asking price and would prefer a deal closer to £40m. Garnacho is one of two attacking targets the Club World Cup winners are looking to land before the close of the window. Talks continue over a move for RB Leipzig's Xavi Simons, who is keen on a move to Stamford Bridge. Personal terms are thought to be broadly agreed with the Dutch international. Enzo Maresca would also like to add a central defender following Levi Colwill's anterior cruciate ligament injury. However, the Italian remains at odds with the directors and ownership over adding a new defender. 2 The hierarchy still prefer to find a solution using the options they have, with Tosin Adarabioyo expected to be fit to face West Ham on Friday. Maresca was reluctant to add to his calls for a new defender, made ahead of the opening game against Crystal Palace, in his post-match press conference.
