Witness to horror: Yazidi survivor's harrowing ISIS testimony

Shafaq News11-05-2025
Shafaq News/ An Iraqi court heard the testimony of a Yazidi woman survivor as part of international legal proceedings against a suspected ISIS member, the National Center for International Judicial Cooperation announced on Sunday.
The woman testified via video link on May 7 before the Karkh First Investigation Court in Baghdad in a case involving Murat Deringani, an alleged ISIS fighter accused of war crimes and severe human rights violations during his time with the group in Iraq and Syria.
Judicial records identified the witness as a victim of kidnapping, enslavement, and sexual abuse by a militant known as 'Abu Yahya al-Almani,' who faces additional charges of genocide and crimes against humanity.
In August 2014, ISIS militants overran the Yazidi-majority district of Sinjar in northern Iraq, killing thousands and capturing women and girls. The United Nations later recognized the attack as genocide.
Kurdish Peshmerga forces retook the area in November 2015. However, according to the US State Department, over 2,600 Yazidi women and girls remain missing, while efforts to identify victims from mass graves continue. Fewer than 700 sets of remains have been exhumed, and only 243 have been identified and returned to families.
Iraqi authorities have documented 93 mass graves attributed to ISIS crimes against Yazidis, while the United Nations estimates that more than 200 mass graves left by ISIS across Iraq could contain the remains of up to 12,000 individuals.

After graduating from 12th grade, Dahat Jangi chose a non-traditional path by enrolling in a 45-day mobile phone repair course instead of attending college. 'In the beginning, it was really difficult because I had no experience,' Jangi told Rudaw. 'But with support from the trainers and the Rwanga team, I improved. In the future, I hope to open my own phone repair shop and become the first woman in Kurdistan to do so.' Jangi was one of 40 participants in a vocational training program run by the Rwanga Foundation - an Erbil-based non-profit organization founded in 2013 with a mission to create 'a world where quality education is accessible for all.' The program offered training in two key professions: tailoring and mobile phone repair. Rezhin Mohsen, another participant, chose to study tailoring - a skill she views as essential for personal independence. 'When I learned about the tailoring course, I decided to take it so I could be independent,' she explained. The vocational initiative is a collaboration between the Rwanga Foundation, the Institute for University Cooperation Onlus (ICU), and the Catholic University in Erbil. Govar Haris, Rwanga's director of public relations, explained that the current training is just the first phase. 'The second stage involves three days of training on workplace adaptation and collaboration with business owners,' he said. In the final stage, participants will gain hands-on experience through a three-month internship with local companies. Afterward, 'they will attend additional workshops to apply their skills hands-on within the companies.' Launched in 2024, the two-year project aims to empower youth through practical skill-building and increase their employment opportunities in the Kurdistan Region.

Sulaimani court denies political ‘interference' in top opposition leader's arrest

Also in Kurdistan New Generation leader arrested in Sulaimani Kurdish woman enters male-dominated tech field with support of Rwanga Foundation 37 Kurdish migrants to be repatriated from Tunisia to the Kurdistan Region Erbil authorities pledge justice for slain victims in gas station shooting A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A Sulaimani court on Wednesday rejected claims that the arrest of Shaswar Abdulwahid, leader of the Kurdistan Region's main opposition New Generation Movement (NGM), was politically motivated or connected to the upcoming federal elections. 'There has been no political interference in this case,' Judge Salah Hassan, spokesperson for the Sulaimani court, told Rudaw. 'We completely reject this being related to electoral campaigns.' Abdulwahid was arrested in Sulaimani on Tuesday night. In a statement, the NGM condemned the arrest, saying he was taken away by security forces affiliated with Sulaimani's ruling Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) 'without prior notice.' The party blamed PUK leader Bafel Talabani and Qubad Talabani, a senior PUK member and the Kurdistan Region's deputy prime minister, for the move. A judicial decree dated August 3 stated that Abdulwahid was sentenced in absentia to six months in prison under Article 431 of the Iraqi Penal Code, which pertains to threats. 'This lawsuit is not new. It is from four years ago,' Hassan said, explaining that the court had previously notified Abdulwahid and ordered his arrest. The case was filed in 2021 by a former member of the Kurdistan Region's parliament. Due to his absence, the court issued the ruling in absentia and appointed an attorney to represent him, Hassan said, adding that Abdulwahid is being held at a Sulaimani police detention center. Hassan further denied claims that 'masked' personnel carried out the arrest, saying police forces belonging to the Kurdistan Region's interior ministry made the arrest. Abdulwahid is also involved in a combination of legal disputes and a prior court ruling dating back to September 2024, according to judicial documents reviewed by Rudaw. The documents show that his companies face enforcement orders for the seizure and auction of properties to settle large debts to a local bank The NGM is the Kurdistan Region's most vocal opposition force. Formed by Abdulwahid to contest the 2018 regional elections, it has seen a dramatic rise in popularity and scored third place in the October 20 Kurdistan parliament elections with 15 seats.
