Grandmaster Ding Liren and Kao, 15, play ‘super-crazy' chess game on Hong Kong tram

Hong Kong teenager Jamison Kao managed to draw a 'super-crazy' chess game with mainland Chinese grandmaster and former world champion Ding Liren at the weekend – but the city's No 1 still said he was a 'bit disappointed'.

Ding was visiting for Sunday's Harrow Hong Kong Scholastic Open Chess Tournament, which featured more than 100 schools.
And on Saturday, Ding took part in a 'simul event', in which he took on 12 players including Kao simultaneously, while riding a tram through the city.
Kao, 15, is a candidate master, having reached a rating of 2,200 or higher from the game's world governing body, the FIDE – a stepping stone towards higher titles such as international master and grandmaster.
'I never really expected to draw with him before I started,' Kao said. 'I thought there would be a decent fight but in the end I would lose.

'As the game progressed from a super-crazy position into the middle game, to a stable advantage for me, I was no longer wondering if I could draw, but rather how I could win.

Hong Kong tourism sector urged to provide packages, discounts for National Games

Hong Kong's tourism sector should consider offering promotional packages including hotel discounts to spectators at the coming National Games, which the city will co-host in November, authorities have said. Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui said on Monday that a unified ticket sales platform would be used for all Games events to be held in Guangdong province, Hong Kong and Macau, with more details to be announced soon. She said once the Guangdong Provincial Executive Committee had finalised ticketing policies, her bureau would encourage the tourism sector to develop various packages, with a view to attracting mainland Chinese and overseas visitors to attend the Games and explore Hong Kong. 'We have already got in touch with the tourism sector and hope that it can introduce some packages or discounts,' Law told a meeting of the Legislative Council's home affairs, culture and sports panel. 'When the ticketing arrangements are announced, all host cities will work together to tackle issues such as demand exceeding supply and scalping.' Tickets will be available via the official website and mobile applications, as well as offline channels such as official outlets and booths at venues.

NBA star Victor Wembanyama joins Shaolin Temple, Game of Death, Airbender memes follow

Victor Wembanyama has ditched the chaos of the NBA court for some peace at a Shaolin Temple in China, and basketball fans are losing their minds. The San Antonio Spurs power forward, sporting a freshly shaved head and wearing robes, has been spotted with monks in Zhengzhou. While other players were letting off steam, the 21-year-old Frenchman has been journeying around mainland China, visiting the Great Wall, and even taking in some of the Volleyball Women's Nations League in Beijing last week, before a 10-day change of pace. Wembanyama has reportedly been meditating, training and sticking to the monk's strict lifestyle while among them, and fans wasted no time in wondering what that meant for the rest of the league. On one reddit thread, a Los Angeles Lakers fan said he was 'truly terrified of Wemby now'.

Sunil Chhetri answers India SOS, as coach questions Hong Kong passport rules

India head coach Manolo Marquez has questioned the rules allowing Hong Kong to select a host of naturalised players, a day before the two sides clash in a crucial Asian Cup qualifier. Overseas Citizens of India cardholders have been banned from representing the country since 2008, while players with dual-nationality cannot be chosen. Hong Kong's squad for Tuesday's game at Kai Tak Stadium includes eight players, including controversial striker Manuel Bleda, who qualified after completing seven years' residency. Spaniard Marquez, who is reportedly on the brink of quitting his post, evidently wanted to have his say on the subject, given the question about the large overseas-born contingent came from an All India Football Federation employee. 'If I was Hong Kong coach, maybe I would do similar,' Marquez said. 'In my opinion, the rules should be the same for everyone. I accept dual nationality, if your father or mother are from the country. 'Other countries can select players if they played in their [domestic] competition. For me, this is not very fair.'
