Wimbledon champ donates sports court to Letaba School
Montjane was joined at the official opening by Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie and Limpopo MEC for Sport Jerry Maseko. The school caters to learners with physical disabilities, many of whom use wheelchairs or crutches for mobility.
Montjane told the Herald that the idea for the court was born earlier this year after a conversation with the school's principal, Dr Tinyiko Shingange. 'I asked her if the learners had access to a tennis court to help them stay active, and when she told me they didn't, I knew I had to do something,' said Montjane. Through her non-profit organisation, the Montjane Sports Development Foundation, she made it her mission to provide the facility.
'For me, it's about leaving a legacy,' Montjane said. 'This court isn't just for competitive sport; it's about giving these learners a chance to move, to play, and to live an active lifestyle, which is important for everyone. I'm grateful for the government's collaboration and honoured that the minister and MEC could be part of this project.'
Shingange thanked Montjane for her support. 'It is humbling to see a world-class athlete return to give back to the underprivileged. This court offers an opportunity for learners who may not excel academically to shine in sport. Who knows, maybe the next Montjane will come from this school.'
The day's celebrations began with a fun walk, which both the minister and the MEC joined before the formal proceedings kicked off.

Swiatek beats Paolini to clinch WTA Cincinnati Open title
USA - Iga Swiatek filled in a piece of her career tennis puzzle on Monday as she won the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Open for the first time with a 7-5, 6-4 defeat of Jasmine Paolini. The final lasting for just under two hours featured 16 break-point chances, with the Polish winner converting on six of 10 while Paolini struggled to make the most of her break opportunities. The six-time Grand Slam singles champion's 11th career win at the WTA 1000 level has left her within striking distance of the all-time record of 13 titles held by Serena Williams. Swiatek won the Cincinnati without dropping a set. The 24-year-old backed up her breakthrough Wimbledon trophy with the Midwest honours and now heads to the last Grand Slam of the season at the US Open with a major confidence boost after the 24th title of her career. Swiatek also climbed to within 500 points of current WTA number one Aryna Sabalenka, with the lead at the top of the table likely to be in play at the Open when it begins on Sunday. Swiatek had stalled twice at the last two editions at the semi-final stage and now has only the Canadian tournament where she has not reached the final at a 1000 event. Swiatek began on the wrong foot as she lost serve to trail 0-3. But the situation was only temporary as the former number one immediately began her turnaround. The Pole answered immediately with two breaks of serve and moved to a 5-3 lead But Paolini earned another break in the 10th game, saving a Swiatek set point to square the final at five-all. Paolini dropped serve for 5-6, giving her opponent the chance to produce a love game and claim the opener 7-5 after just under an hour on court. The second set was a roller coaster, with the pair twice swapping breaks of serve before Swiatek salvaged a pair of break points to lead 5-3 and then serving out the winner two games later.

Will the Springboks sell out Cape Town Stadium?
After several thousand seats went unsold for the Springboks' opening Rugby Championship Test against Australia at Ellis Park on Saturday, questions have been asked regarding ticket sales for the upcoming weekend's clash in Cape Town. After Gayton McKenzie's Sports, Arts and Culture department gave away 2 000 free tickets, the official attendance was still some 10 000 below capacity at the iconic Johannesburg venue. A quick check of the official Ticketmaster website on Monday still shows several thousand tickets are available, especially in the R3 500+ price range. Following the Springboks' woeful second half performance at Ellis Park, one wonders if fans in the Cape will be willing to fork out that much for a ticket. Rain is also forecast for the afternoon / evening and the Cape Town Stadium remains a nightmare in terms of traffic and parking at the best of times. When one considers a one-month subscription to DStv costs around R1 000, one is never surprised to learn there will be empty seats in the stands. Following Saturday's match, South Africans have only one more chance to see the Springboks live in Mzansi this year – against Argentina at Hollywoodbets Kings Park on 27 September. Will Gayton McKenzie's Sports, Arts and Culture department be giving away another 2 000 free tickets? Saturday's match follows a trend of lower-than-expected ticket sales for the Springboks' recent July Test matches – including fixtures against Italy in Pretoria and Port Elizabeth and Georgia in Nelspruit – none of which reportedly reached capacity. Despite this, SA Rugby remains optimistic, pointing to strong broadcast numbers and sustained interest in the national team, which remains a major commercial drawcard following their 2023 Rugby World Cup triumph. Sinner or Alcaraz to triumph at Cincinnati Open?
There's not much separating the world's two best men's players. The year's final tennis Major, the US Open, gets going on Sunday with the first round of action. Before then there is the not-so-small matter of the Cincinnati Open finals happening on Monday and Tuesday. First up on Monday evening at 9pm (SA time), Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz will square off for the fourth time this season in a final. Both men have enjoyed super seasons and will be confident ahead of the US Open, but winning the Cincinnati title will be foremost on their minds. There is so little between them, as we've seen over the last few years. Betway have Sinner, the recent Wimbledon champion, as the favourite to win at 1.49. Alcaraz is at 2.44. There are a number of other options available for those keen to wager some money on the match, such as first set winner, total games won and correct score. An interesting option is one player winning a set to nil — at 9.20. The women's final, between Iga Swiatek and Jasmine Paolini, takes place on Tuesday. See Betway for more on that match. All odds are correct at time of publishing and subject to change.
