Puri servitors preparing prasad at Digha Jagannath shrine inauguration to face boycott

, the association whose servitors prepare the Mahaprasad at Puri Jagannath Temple, has threatened its members with boycott if they cook the bhog during the inauguration of the newly constructed Jagannath Temple in Digha, West Bengal, on April 30.
The warning comes amid reports that some servitors from Puri Jagannath Temple have been allegedly asked to prepare the prasad at the Digha shrine during its inauguration.
Various servitors from different Nijogs, including the Suar Mahasuar of Puri shrine, have been invited by the Digha temple trust to take part in the inaugural ceremony.
"We have got information that the Digha Jagannath Temple's trust board has asked some of our colleagues to prepare Mahaprasad for the guests and devotees during the shrine's inauguration on Akshaya Tritiya (April 30). We have advised our members not to do so. The cooking methods and traditions are distinctive to Puri temple and should exclusively stay so," said Narayan Mahasuar, secretary of Suar Mahasuar Njiog.

The association has put up a notice on temple walls and has also circulated it among members. The message states, "There is no harm in attending the inauguration ceremony. However, none of the Nijog servitors and their staff should prepare Mahaprasad (cooked or dry) at the Digha temple. If they violate this order, they will be boycotted by the association and won't be allowed to cook Mahaprasad in Puri Jagannath Temple."
Nijog's advisor Baidyanath Mahasuar said, "We are servitors of Puri Jagannath Temple and duty-bound to render our services to Lord Jagannath. We should not act like commercial cooks, nor discharge our duty outside the main shrine."
The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), Puri, has endorsed the Suar Mahasuar Nijog's stand. "We are also of the same opinion. The Nijog members are exclusively preparing Mahaprasad for Puri Jagannath Temple. They should obey this tradition and not cook elsewhere," a senior SJTA official told TOI.
According to sources, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate the new Digha temple. The shrine's development, funded by the state govt, costs about Rs 250 crore and spans 22 acres.

1 2 3 4 5 Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has sought permission of state forest department to fell 28 dead trees and trim branches of about 100 trees leaning dangerously in the city. "Usually, the civic body needs to obtain the permission of the forest dept for felling a tree. But these 100 trees that are leaning dangerously, posing a threat to public safety, have trunk-like fat branches. So, we are taking the forest department's permission to trim those branches," a senior official of KMC parks and gardens dept told TOI. The civic body has been doing an audit of health of trees in various wards since July, and a section of officials associated with the survey conceded that concrete bases, built as part of a beautification drive, have put the life of several trees at stake. Following a writ petition by green activists a few years ago, the Calcutta High Court asked for demolition of the concrete structures at the base of trees so that roots could access water, soil, and air. In keeping with the order, the parks and gardens dept removed the concrete bases of the trees. So far, the audit done in different wards has found nearly 200 leaning trees, including 10 diseased trees and 28 dead trees. The species of the trees are Mahogany, Krishnachura, Radhachura, Aswattha, banyan, and Kadam, and some of them are nearly a century old. "We are planning to finish about 80% of the survey before Durga Puja. Now, we are awaiting the nod of the forest dept to axe the dead trees and trim the branches of the trees that have been identified as leaning in an extremely dangerous condition," said the official. Experts flagged concerns over concrete bases. Environment scientist Swati Nandi Chakraborty said, "Protecting a tree's main roots is vital to its health, stability and survival." Debabrata Maity, CU botany professor, said, "Terrestrial plants have specific mycorrhizal association, which is essential for their healthy life. This should not be disturbed through concrete bases." 18-hour water supply suspension in Mulund from August 21 morning for GMLR bridge work
Water supply in the Mulund area in Mumbai's eastern suburbs will be severely affected for 18 hours between Thursday and Friday owing to the construction work of Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR), being taken up by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), officials said on Sunday. Civic officials said that before carrying out the piling work of a bridge that is set to be a premium connector of GMLR, the BMC will divert the alignment of a water supply main of 1,200 mm. This supply system would transport water to Mumbai's Mulund area from the reservoir. While the BMC has maintained that water supply will be restored after 18 hours, the authorities have also urged residents to drink boiled water for at least two days after the work is over. Meanwhile, the work on boring GMLR's twin tunnels is set to begin early next year. The parts of the tunnel-boring machine arrived at Mumbai in 54 containers last month, and the work of assembling the machinery is underway. GMLR's twin tunnels will be among the widest road tunnel projects undertaken by the BMC. The Rs 6,500-crore GMLR is an ambitious project to alleviate congestion by linking Goregaon in the western suburbs to Mulund in the eastern suburbs. A crucial part of the project is the 6.65-km-long twin tunnels, which will start from Film City in the western suburbs and open near Mulund's Amar Junction, which currently houses a huge slum pocket. The project will also include vehicular interchanges as well as arterial and cable-stayed bridges. Once operational, this corridor is set to become a game-changer by bringing down east-west travel time to less than 115 minutes from 90 minutes during peak periods.
