Christophe Soumillon to ride Noisy Boy in Hong Kong Derby – if he gets his new passport in time

Dennis Yip Chor-hong is hoping Christophe Soumillon can iron out some passport issues in time to ride Noisy Boy in next Sunday's BMW Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) at Sha Tin.
Soumillon, who won the 2006 Derby aboard Viva Pataca, rode Fast Network for Yip in January's Classic Mile and the duo will combine again provided the Belgian can travel.
'He needs to do some immigration first – he lost his passport. He's checking, but if he can come he will ride Noisy Boy. His agent said he can come,' said Yip.
Noisy Boy was ridden by Andrea Atzeni in the Classic Cup (1,800m), travelling far too quick in the lead before fading into 13th.
Yip is chasing a second straight Derby victory after the win of Massive Sovereign 12 months ago, while John Size saddles up three runners as he looks to add to victories of Fay Fay (2012), Luger (2015) and Ping Hai Star (2018) in the city's most prestigious race.
The 12-time champion trainer tackles the Derby with Mickley and last-start winners Bundle Award and Beauty Alliance.
'Two of them posted very impressive wins at their last start, so it's a very exciting race for us,' he said.
'[Mickley has] done well. He's had a bit of tough racing and he's come through it OK. His last start was disappointing but things didn't go his way in the run.

'Since then he's had a little bit of an ease up, I've changed his routine and he's gone up to Conghua for a freshen up.
'[Bundle Award] was ridden back in the field and allowed to finish the race off the other day. He adapted to that very well and he gets into the race with a live chance.
'[Beauty Alliance's] improvement has been massive since the beginning of the season. He's one of those horses who has run into form at the right time and that can be extremely important on the day.
'He's one of the horses who does extremely well and he's always been very tough. He probably just needed some racing and a bit of distance to show up.'

Pogacar captures fourth career Tour de France title

Pogacar captures fourth career Tour de France title Pogacar was spared any late challenge to his overall lead on his way to his title defence. Photo: Reuters Tadej Pogacar has completed a supreme performance to win the Tour de France in a rainy Paris, crushing his rivals to collect a fourth title. Wout van Aert triumphed in the final-day cliffhanger around Montmartre, but Pogacar was spared any late challenge to his overall lead when the weather forced organisers to neutralise times to avoid accidents on the slippery cobbled roads. However, Pogacar more than played his part in a thrilling finale before Belgian rider Van Aert pulled away on the last climb. "I was really happy they neutralised the times of the GC (general classification)," Pogacar said. "Then it was more relaxed to race and you just had to have good legs to be in front. I tried but hats off to Wout, he was incredibly strong. It was a really nice race." The Slovenian has now won the Tour four times in six years and finished runner-up twice. "It's six years in a row on the podium and this one feels especially amazing," he said. Second-placed Jonas Vingegaard was unable to contend with Pogacar, but the winner paid tribute to the Dane. "I spoke to Jonas today. We've been racing each other for five years now and we have raised each other to a higher level," he said. Despite the rain, tens of thousands of spectators packed Montmartre to follow Pogacar's progress through the narrow streets of the popular tourist spot. He played to the delighted crowds by racing to the head of the peloton near the Moulin Rouge cabaret at the foot of the climb before Van Aert produced a well-timed attack to drop Pogacar and charge to the finish line on the Champs-Elysees avenue. Pogacar was fourth on the day but after wins in 2020, 2021 and 2024, he again proved untouchable in the world's greatest bike race. Vingegaard, the champion in 2022 and 2023, suffered two shocking off-days and ended second overall, 4 minutes and 24 seconds adrift. "I had some of my worst days here and some of the best," he said after the race, adding he would turn his attention to the Tour of Spain. "I'll have a week off now, and then start training for the Vuelta," he added. Breakout German star Florian Lipowitz, 24, took third on his debut, rounding out the podium a distant 11 minutes off the pace in third. Defending his title, Pogacar embarked from the start in Lille as clear favourite and won four stages along the way. In the first week, he struck on rolling runs in the north and west at Rouen and the Mur de Bretagne. He then turned the screw on the slopes of the Pyrenees in week two with his rivals as good as vanquished. Vingegaard suffered on the stage-five time trial, and again in the second week at the Hautacam mountain, leaving the Dane in shock as his form abandoned him. In need of a massive turn around in the Alps, Pogacar adopted mature tactics and sat on his rival's wheel. After it was all over, a beaming Pogacar said he could finally relax. "Everybody has different ideas about how to celebrate. I want some peace and beautiful weather, enjoying some quiet days at home," he said. (AFP)

Hong Kong defender targets historic win to break 40-year drought against China

Leon Jones has urged Hong Kong to finish their East Asian Championship campaign in historic style when they meet China on Tuesday. Hong Kong were rigid and determined in a 2-0 loss to hosts South Korea on Friday, three days after failing to do themselves justice in a heavy 6-1 defeat by Japan. Centre-back Jones credited a change of structure for 'making us more competitive' and said a first meaningful meeting with the Chinese since 2022 was 'a chance, against good opposition, to show what we can do'. Hong Kong beat China 2-1 in a behind-closed-doors friendly on New Year's Day last year, but May 19 marked the 40th anniversary of the city team's only competitive success against their mainland rivals: a 2-1 World Cup qualifying win in Beijing. 'A lot of people feel strongly about the Hong Kong team, and China is a big derby game; a big rivalry,' Jones said. Lyon relegated to Ligue 2 over club's finances

Lyon relegated to Ligue 2 over club's finances Lyon were unable to convince the French football regulator to lift a provisional relegation announced last November. File photo: Reuters Seven-time Ligue 1 champions Lyon said they would appeal their relegation to the second-tier by French football's financial watchdog. At a hearing earlier in the day, Lyon were unable to convince the National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG) to lift the restrictions it had put on the club in November. "Over the past few months, we have worked closely with DNCG, meeting all of its demands with equity investments exceeding the amounts requested," the club said in a statement." After the meeting, Lyon's president John Textor said he remained confident of avoiding the drop to Ligue 2 for next season, where the club has not played since 1989. "Our liquidity situation has improved considerably," he said. American Textor took over as Lyon's majority owner in December 2022 from long-standing boss Jean-Michel Aulas, who had overseen unprecedented success at the French outfit. Textor, 59, also holds stakes in Brazilian side Botafoga and Belgian club Molenbeek. Earlier this week he sold his 43 percent stake in Premier League outfit Crystal Palace. According to the BBC, they were sold for 190 million pounds to Woody Johnson, the owner of the NFL's New York Jets. Lyon have reduced their salary bill with attacker Alexandre Lacazette and goalkeeper Anthony Lopes released. They have sold Rayan Cherki to Manchester City and Maxence Caqueret to Como. Textor said his Eagle group has also put 83 million euros into the club. "Thanks to the equity contributions from our shareholders and the sale of Crystal Palace, our cash position has improved considerably, and we have more than sufficient resources for the 2025-2026 season," said the club statement. Lyon qualified for next season's Europa League after finishing sixth in the French top-flight. If their relegation is confirmed, they would be replaced in Ligue 1 by Reims. Lyon won seven consecutive French titles between 2002 and 2008, under Aulas. "It's a terrible blow to all those who love Lyon" Aulas said on X on Tuesday. "For 36 years I made sure that such a situation could not happen. "I gave everything to build a solid, respected, ambitious club that was financially healthy. Today, it's sadness that dominates. And an immense failure to understand," the 76-year-old added. Only five clubs have won Ligue 1 more often. Paris Saint-Germain hold the record with 13 titles. Lyon are set to begin their pre-season on July 7. (AFP)
