Scottish Colourist paintings reunited after more than 70 years ahead of auction
Paintings by two Scottish Colourists are to go under the hammer in a 'friends reunited' moment this week after more than 70 years apart.
Samuel John Peploe's Firs At The Massif des Calanques, Cassis was displayed alongside Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell's Interior – Santa Maria della Salute, Venice at an exhibition in Edinburgh in 1949.
They will feature in Lyon & Turnbull's Scottish paintings and sculpture auction on Thursday, with each estimated to fetch between £80,000 and £120,000.
Firs At The Massif des Calanques, Cassis was painted in 1928 during the third of four trips Peploe made to the French port during a period of more than 25 years.
Cadell painted the interior of Santa Maria della Salute, a church which stands at the entrance to the Grand Canal, following a visit he made to Venice in 1910.
Both paintings featured in the Scottish Colourists exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy's Festival Exhibition in 1949, where work by their friend Leslie Hunter was also on show.
Alice Strang, senior specialist with Lyon & Turnbull and an expert in the work of the Scottish Colourists, said: 'This is a 'friends reunited' moment.
'It is thrilling to think that the last time these two beautiful paintings, by artists who were such good friends, were in the same room was in 1949, when they were exhibited together in the Royal Scottish Academy, down the road from our saleroom.
'The Peploe transports us to the heat of Cassis, whilst the Cadell takes us to the beauty of Venice.
'Their remarkable reunion will last until the sale day this Thursday.'

Mark Wright shared a video from his axed family TV show which was scrapped after one series despite including a moment of television gold. The Wrights were dealt a blow that their BBC travel show will not be returning for a second series last year, but the one series is still available to watch on iPlayer. A clip from the show posted by Mark showed himself, his dad Mark Snr and his brother Josh bickering over directions in the car. Despite being the driver of the vehicle, Mark Snr hilariously argued that it should have been Josh keeping an eye on the sat nav and telling him where to go. 'The Wrights would have been up for it, but it wasn't to be.' The source added though that a consolation for the Essex family is that the BBC is 'still keen to work with them' so another show could be on the cards. 'He cares so much' - what's it like to play under Martin?
What can the Rangers players - and fans - expect life to be like under new head coach Russell Martin?Attacking midfielder Scott Fraser is well versed to comment, having starred for Martin at MK Dons in English League who is out of contract at Dundee this summer, told BBC Scotland: "The way Russell wants his team to play suits modern football, it certainly suits the bigger clubs."When we were at MK Dons, we dominated possession but we also worked extremely hard off the ball. So it wasn't a case of just our centre-backs passing the ball between themselves, it was possession with a purpose of trying to get it forward, and when you do get it forward it is about trying to sustain those attacks."Fraser, 30, believes the Rangers players will "love" Martin's style of football, adding: "I think the fans will learn to love it as well."They will go to every game now knowing what to expect from their team."It is not just keeping the ball to try and look nice on the eye. He is very demanding on finishing the attack and if you can't finish the attack then you certainly sustain it by locking in."He doesn't let his centre-halves or deep midfielders sit back and watch the game, he expects them to be up on it, to be relentless with winning the ball back if they do lose it."Fraser was spent the 2020-21 season under Martin at MK Dons, winning the club's players' player of the year award."He is such a good guy first and foremost," he added. "But he has that really good balance of he is almost like a mate at times, but he has that good aura about him where you know he is the boss as well."He is so caring for his players, he would genuinely do anything for his players."When it is behind closed doors he is very hard on players as well but for the right reasons. A lot gets pointed at Russell about 'he doesn't have a plan B' but he is very clever in the way he can tweak things."So it might not look like he has changed a lot but for certain games he will definitely adapt to what needs to be done."I would tell the Rangers fans to just enjoy it, enjoy the journey. He is very process driven and it might take him a little bit of time to get things moving, but once he does I think they will really enjoy it."
