Father of drill rapper whose party was targeted in mass shooting hit with federal weapons charges
Melvin Doyle, 49, who has multiple felony convictions in his background, was arrested on Monday after he allegedly sold three pistols for $3,000, according to a criminal complaint brought this week in U.S. District Court.
Agents with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives found Doyle sitting in his Lincoln SUV in the 6500 block of South Yale Avenue, about a mile and a half from the site of the transaction, the charges alleged. Doyle was still wearing a holster on his waist that fit the one of the Glock pistols he'd sold, and he was carrying $1,100 in cash, all in $100 denominations, the complaint alleged.
A cell phone Doyle had had also been used to communicate with the purchasers of the weapons, the complaint alleged.
Doyle is the father of Melanie Doyle, the drill rapper known as Mello Buckzz, according to a law enforcement source. A rising artist who recently collaborated with rap superstar G Herbo, she was hosting an album release party at a River North club on July 2 when a gunman from a passing vehicle fired into the crowd outside, killing four and wounding 14 others. No arrests have been made.
Though the investigation into Melvin Doyle's weapons sales was not related to the mass shooting, there has been concern among law enforcement about gang retaliation. His daughter on social media claims an affiliation with 'NLMB,' a gang faction based in the South Shore and Greater Grand Crossing neighborhoods where her father still resides.
NLMB has feuded openly with opposing South Side gangs, sources have said, where each has used their music and social media to taunt each other before sometimes exchanging hits on opposition members. On social media channels, Melanie Doyle has said that her significant other and best friend were among those killed.
Melvin Doyle, meanwhile, has an extensive criminal record dating back to his late teens.
He was charged with attempted murder in 1995, pleaded guilty in 1998 and was sentenced to 10 years in prison, records show. Details about the case were not immediately available.
Cook County court records show that the same day that the attempted murder charge was filed, Doyle was also charged with murder in the March 1995 killing of a 23-month-old boy, who was hit by gunfire intended for a rival gang member. In that case, Doyle was found not guilty in a bench trial in July 1998, about a month before he pleaded guilty in the attempted murder, according to court records.
Doyle also has two other convictions for narcotics possession, and in 2010 he was charged with armed home invasion and aggravated domestic battery stemming from an incident in Skokie. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced in August 2011 to 12 years.
The current case charges Melvin Doyle with a single count of illegal possession of a firearm by a felon. The complaint, however, details a series of transactions that began in May and continued until his arrest Monday,
Doyle had an initial appearance at the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse on Tuesday, where prosecutors asked that he be held pending trial. A detention hearing is scheduled for Friday.

Trump to disclose Washington plans on Monday morning
FBI crime statistics show that the city experienced a surge in violent crime in 2023 (though with homicide numbers far below the worst years from 1989 to 1993), but the numbers have dropped significantly since then in a range of categories, including homicides, violent crimes and carjackings. 'It is true we had a terrible spike in crime in 2023, but this is not 2023, this is 2025,' Mayor Muriel Bowser said Sunday on MSNBC's 'The Weekend.' 'We've done that by working with the community, working with the police, working with our prosecutors, and, in fact, working with the federal government.' She added: 'Any comparison to a war-torn country is hyperbolic and false.' People wait to watch flyovers on the National Mall during a Fourth of July celebration in Washington. | Rahmad Gul/AP The District of Columbia Home Rule Act provides the legal framework for the city's self-government, its elections and its administration of day-to-day functions. It was passed by Congress in 1973 by wide margins and signed by President Richard M. Nixon. In Feburary 2025, however, Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) and Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) offered legislation to repeal the law. Trump's Truth Social post did not say exactly what the president had in mind, but he made it clear he planned to act in some manner. 'The Mayor of D.C., Muriel Bowser, is a good person who has tried, but she has been given many chances,' Trump's Truth Social post said, 'and the Crime Numbers get worse, and the City only gets dirtier and less attractive. The American Public is not going to put up with it any longer.'

Sister of missing Texas woman Brandi Wells continues to seek answers in her case after nearly 20 years
The memories of celebrating the Fourth of July in 2006 stand out to Samantha Rodriguez. She was only 17 years old then, but the holiday was one she spent with her half-sister, 23-year-old Brandi Wells. They attended a party called the '4th of July Jubilee,' hosted by the city of Schertz, Texas. There was food and fireworks, but most important was the time they spent together — something they didn't often get to do since they lived in different parts of Texas. 'It was at the city park. You know, like after hours for the fireworks. She had gone there, and she was hanging out with some guy,' Samantha laughed. 'But we were hanging out.' Samantha told Dateline that a little over a month later, she learned Brandi was missing. ''What do you mean she's missing?'' Samantha remembered thinking. 'I had just seen her, and 30 days later, it seems I was getting a phone call saying that she was missing.' It was the first week of August 2006. Brandi was just weeks away from starting classes again at Trinity Valley Community College in Brownsboro, Texas. She wanted to become a teacher. But first, she visited her mother in Tyler, Texas. On the evening of August 2, she went out to meet some friends. 'She came in, she changed clothes, and said she was going to the club with some friends,' Brandi's mother, Ellen Tant, told NBC affiliate KETK. She assumed Brandi was going somewhere in town. Little did she know that Brandi was heading to Longview, about 45 minutes away. According to KETK, security footage shows Brandi entering a nightclub called Graham Central Station — now Electric Cowboy — around 10:36 p.m. and checking in at the counter. People inside would later tell police that Brandi was asking for money for gas. She was inside the club for nearly two hours and was seen on tape walking alone out toward the parking lot around 12:30 a.m. The night she went missing, Brandi was wearing a dark, floral-print tube top, rust-colored pants with strapless high-heeled sandals, according to TheDoeNetwork. A few hours after she left the club, a black 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix coupe with Texas plates was found abandoned on the side of Interstate 20. It wasn't until days later that police connected the car to Brandi Wells. According to KETK, Brandi's purse and a gas can her family believed did not belong to her were found in the trunk. They also reported that the driver's side seat of the car had been adjusted for someone taller than Brandi, but because it took days to link the car to her disappearance, authorities didn't know if that happened before or after the car was abandoned. Dateline reached out multiple times to the Longview Police Department to discuss Brandi's case, but has not received a response. At just 17 years old, Samantha could hardly comprehend the thought of her sister's disappearance. 'I was almost dismissive of it. It was the first tragedy I had ever experienced,' she said. 'Tragedies only happened in movies, and I was so not believing it.' Samantha says Brandi was an incredibly bubbly, carefree, and trusting person. She remembers when she and Brandi were both living in San Antonio, Brandi would pick her up so they could go shopping and try on clothes together, or go to the movies and CD stores — do sisterly things. Of course, there were things they couldn't do together, due to their age difference. One thing, in particular. ''I can't wait until you're old enough and we can go clubbing together,'' Samantha recalled Brandi telling her. 'And so that's one of the things I think about, because that's how she went missing.' Samantha says Brandi's disappearance has made her more vigilant in her own life. 'Whenever I was going out to dance halls in San Antonio, I made it a point to talk to all the bar [staff] and bouncers. I didn't want to be somewhere that people did not know who I was,' she said. Grown now, with a husband and three children, Samantha still maintains that vigilance. She keeps a window-breaking device in her vehicle and a flotation device in her trunk. And she has her phone set up — with authorities in mind. 'I keep my husband's phone number right on my screen so all you have to do is press the power button,' she said. 'I've almost become a very paranoid person about safety.' Samantha is now studying to become a teacher — just as Brandi was when she disappeared. It makes her feel connected to the sister she didn't get enough time with. 'Being given a sister, when you've never had one before — it's like getting a puppy for the first time,' Samantha said. 'I was so giddy about just having a sister.' Today, she is just hoping for answers. Brandi was around 5' tall and weighed 125-130 lbs. at the time of her disappearance, with blonde or strawberry-blonde hair and blue eyes. She would be 42 years old today. If you have any information about Brandi's disappearance, please contact the Longview Police Department at 903-237-1199.

LSU football's JT Lindsey surrenders after being accused of allowing murder suspects to stay in his dorm
LSU freshman running back JT Lindsey surrendered to campus police on Friday after a warrant was issued for his arrest on two felony counts of accessory after-the-fact to second degree murder, his attorney told WAFB-TV. He is accused of allowing two individuals — 17-year-old Shemell Jacobs and 18-year-old Keldrick Jordan — wanted on murder charges to stay in his LSU dorm room earlier this year, according to the arrest warrant obtained by the outlet. Jacobs and Jordan are accused of killing 17-year-old Corey Brooks in a fatal shooting in Alexandria, La., in May. 7 JT Lindsey surrendered to campus police on Friday. His bond was set at $5,000 and he was released later on Friday, per WAFB-TV. 7 Shemell Jacobs and Keldrick Jordan are accused of second degree murder. Alexandria Police Department 'On 8/4/25 LSUPD was contacted by the U.S. Marshals Service, asking for help in locating the suspect,' the arrest warrant said. 'LSUPD was able to quickly locate Jacobs via surveillance footage and found him to be in and around Riverbend Hall. At approx. 1815 hrs LSUPD, along with assisting law enforcement agencies, were able to locate both Jacobs and Jordan in apartment 4071 of Riverbend Hall. Jaiden Lindsey is a resident of apartment 4071. 'In addition to this, Jacobs had Lindsey's LSU ID on his person and was able to provide Lindsey's personal pin code, which allowed him to come and go from the apartment and dorm building. When reviewing recorded surveillance footage, Lindsey can be seen in the dorm building with Jacobs and Jordan as far back as 7/24/25 and on multiple occasions, Jacobs and Jordan come and go without Lindsey, using his LSU ID to access the building.' 7 JT Lindsey catches a pass during LSU practice on Aug. 1, 2025. University Images via Getty Images Law enforcement officials said they found multiple firearms in the dorm room, including two AR-15 rifles, a Draco and a Glock, WAFB-TV reported. Lindsey's attorney, Kris Perret, told the outlet that Lindsey did not know Jacobs and Jordan were wanted for murder and that he was at football camp at the time. 7 JT Lindsey and LSU head coach Brian Kelly University Images via Getty Images 7 LSU has suspended JT Lindsey until his felony charges are resolved. WAFB Perret also said Lindsey is not alleged to be involved in 'the alleged crimes of the arrested individuals.' 'JT Lindsey is adamant that he is innocent of any alleged criminal misconduct and any allegations of wrongdoing against him,' Perret said in a statement. 'He is fully cooperating with authorities and looks forward to clearing his name as quickly as possible. …He was unaware that the individuals arrested had committed any crimes or that they had been accused of any crimes, or that they were wanted by the police for questioning when he allowed them to stay at his apartment. 'Had he known that the individuals were accused of any crimes or wanted by the police, he would not have allowed them into his apartment or associated with them in any manner.' 7 JT Lindsey University Images via Getty Images But the arrest warrant alleges that Lindsey did in fact know Jacobs and Jordan — both of whom he was friends with — were wanted for murder, citing an interview with 'an associate of Lindsey.'
