Alleged Sydney childcare paedophile identified
Police on Thursday revealed David William James had been charged with a raft of child abuse offences allegedly committed across six out-of-school hours (OOSH) care centres between 2021 and 2024.
Artarmon man Mr James allegedly used 10 children aged five and six to produce child abuse material while under his care.
The 26-year-old was a former trainee NSW Police officer and was in the 2017 class at Knox Grammar School on Sydney's upper north shore.

Records show Mr James was on the High School Certificate honour roll in 2017 for achievement in music.
He also worked at Knox's high school, preparatory school between 2018 and 2020 and OOSH club in 2024. None of the offences he has been charged with relate to Knox.
The school said in a brief statement: 'The AFP has assured us that we are not being investigated as part of the David James matter'.
Mr James faces 13 charges in total, including 10 counts of using a child under 14 to make child abuse material and two counts of possessing child abuse material.
News.com.au understands some of the alleged videos were recorded in bathroom settings, and Mr James allegedly touched himself in front of children.
It is also understood complaints had allegedly been raised about Mr James in the years before his arrest.
It was revealed in June that 1200 letters had been sent to parents and carers who may have come into contact with Mr James.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has now released a list of 58 childcare centres where he worked between 2018 and 2024, 44 of which were located on the city's north shore.
Police allege he committed offences at the following six centres: Pyrmont OSHC – City of Sydney; OSHClub – Barker College; Willoughby Kids House; Helping Hands – St Ives Park Public School; St Ives OSHC Centre – Kidzone; and Helping Hands – Lane Cove West.
City of Sydney councillor Jess Miller took to social media on Thursday to share her horror at learning the alleged pedophile worked at centres where her child had attended.
'Like many parents, it was with a lump in my throat I just read through the list of childcare centres, OSCH, and Camp Australia centres where alleged pedophile David James worked between 2018 -2024,' she wrote.
'There was one that matched-up to where my child attended school holiday care. So I can absolutely understand the outrage, grief, disgust and anger felt by so many families making similar discoveries today, and who have been living with the spectre for months – sincerely, my heart goes out to you.
'Advice from City of Sydney staff is the police say there is no evidence or information that offending has taken place three of the listed City of Sydney services at Ultimo, Pyrmont and KGV OSHC.
'While this is a small mercy, I am very aware that it offers little comfort to victims and their families.'
Mr James' identity had been suppressed under a court order since his arrest in October until it was lifted after a challenge by media organisations on Thursday.
He was employed by NSW Police as a probationary constable during the same period he was allgedly offending from December 2021 to September 2022.
After failing to complete his probation, he continued in a civilian capacity until his resignation in May 2023.
'During his employment, the man failed to seek the required approval to engage in secondary employment, and as such, police were unaware of his concurrent role in the childcare sector,' a NSW Police statement said.
AFP Acting Assistant Commissioner Brett James said at a press conference this week the families of children whose 'innocence was allegedly violated' would be supported.
'Any form of child sexual abuse is confronting,' he told reporters.
'Even more so when the alleged perpetrator is a person entrusted with the care of our children.'
Acting Commissioner James said there had been a 'painstaking' process of victim identification since officers became aware of the alleged material.
'There is no evidence to suggest the man's alleged offending took place in out-of-school-hours facilities or other care providers which have not yet been contacted by law enforcement,' he said.

Woman dead, man critical after overnight stabbings
A woman is dead and a man in his 20s is fighting for life following overnight stabbing attacks in separate states. Homicide Squad detectives are investigating after the woman was found fatally injured and a man known to her was taken into custody at a house in Coleraine, about 35km from Hamilton, in Victoria's southwest. Local officers found the woman alive shortly after 1am on Saturday but she died at the scene. Police said the arrested man was known to the victim and was being interviewed by investigators. Two men were also stabbed at a house gathering in Sydney's west overnight, one of them suffering critical wounds. Emergency crews were called to a residential unit in Patricia Street, Mays Hill, in the city's inner west, in the early hours of Saturday following reports a man in his 20s had sustained serious injuries. He was located and treated at the scene by paramedics for an apparent life-threatening knife wound to the torso before being taken to Westmead Hospital. Police said a second man of similar age was found nearby with a wound to his arm. He was also transported to Westmead. It is understood the pair and others at the address were known to each other. Victorian parents were urged on Thursday to hand in their children's machetes and knives at police amnesty posts. A total of 45 stations across the state will host disposal bins set up for the three-month initiative. Search for missing Alice Springs man Gach Top in Central Australia suspended by police
The search for missing Alice Springs man Gach Top has been suspended after five days, after police and the SES sought advice from local trail guides and family friends. The 26-year-old man went missing on Monday and his car was found abandoned 14.5 kilometres west of John Flynn's Grave Historical Reserve. Police have described Mr Top as a 6-foot-tall man of Sudanese appearance with a lean build and short curly hair. NT Police Acting Sergeant Christopher Grotherr said the earlier helicopter search had been scaled back on Saturday in favour of drones, but the number of on-ground personnel searching the rugged terrain remained the same until 6pm that evening. He said Mr Top's family had been kept updated throughout the search and were now aware it had been suspended. "Extensive search efforts, coordinated by the NT Police Force's Search and Rescue Section, were suspended late this afternoon following a fifth day of searching an area about 21 kilometres west of Alice Springs," NT Police said. "The operation at its peak involved more than 50 personnel from NT Police, NT Emergency Services, NT Fire and Rescue Service, and Parks and Wildlife NT." The matter has now been handed to the NT Police Southern Crime Division for further investigation. Larapinta Trail Trek Support owner Zak Dragic, who has been rescuing hikers along the track for a decade, assisted police on Saturday by navigating his drone over the hilly, grassy terrain surrounding Larapinta Drive — close to the ground and into areas helicopters couldn't access. Sudanese community leader Chuol Yat, a close friend of Mr Top's family, described the young man's disappearance as out of character. "I couldn't believe it when I heard that he was wandering, nowhere to be found," he said. "From the way people are talking to me about him, people are very sad, people are disappointed, people are feeling very devastated." Another friend of the family, Elia Mabok, had also joined search efforts earlier. Mr Mabok, a member of the local Sudanese community, brought along his dog David Kong to assist. "We are a small community here in Alice Springs, and we all work with and know each other," he said. Acting Sergeant Grotherr said police had also received "valuable" input from locals in the surrounding Indigenous communities and had collaborated with Aboriginal liaison officers through the search. "They have been out here conducting searches for us and providing us some pretty valuable advice in where we might need to search," he said. Acting Sergeant Grotherr thanked the search teams for their efforts, but said "unfortunately, it hasn't produced the result we hoped for". Police are continuing to call for any witnesses who have information from the vicinity of Larapinta Drive, Standley Chasm, or Simpsons Gap.
