The Secret Meaning of Jack's Shotgun in the 'Reacher' Season 3 Finale

The Secret Meaning of Jack's Shotgun in the 'Reacher' Season 3 Finale

Yahoo27-03-2025

In the Season 3 finale of Reacher, our hero Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) doles out his brand of hardcore justice, not just on his old enemy Quinn (Brian Tee) but also blasts anyone else who stands in his way. And, while there are a lot of different types of firearms available to Reacher, thanks to the illegal gun shipment central to the story, he doesn't choose an automatic weapon or anything fancy. Instead, in choosing his gun for the big showdown, Reacher opts for a slick shotgun.
But this choice isn't random. In fact, Reacher picking that exact shotgun has a very specific meaning. Here's why Reacher's weapon of choice has a secret meaning. Spoilers ahead for Reacher Season 3, Episode 8, "Unfinished Business."Reacher's shotgun is an Easter egg for the original book upon which Season 3 is based, Lee Child's 2003 novel Persuader. And that's because the shotgun that Reacher decides to use is called a "Persuader."
The exact kind of gun is called a Mossberg 500 Persuader, which is a .410 shotgun. That means, as shotguns go, it's on the smaller side. On page 400 of the paperback version of the book, Reacher describes the gun like this:
"It was an M500 Persuader. It was the Cruiser model. No shoulder stock. Just a pistol grip...It was a nasty, brutal, close-up street weapon."
The name of the book obviously has multiple meanings, but just like in the show, Reacher gets his hands on a Persuader shotgun toward the end of the book. In the book, prior to that, he's using all sorts of different guns: Duffy's Glock, a pair of Colt Anacondas, and at one point, a Beretta. (Funnily enough, a Beretta was James Bond's original gun in the novels, before he switched to a Walther PPK in the novel version of Dr No.)
In the show, Reacher uses just one shotgun in the final fight, though in the book he has two. This interestingly parallels the opening episode of the series, in which Reacher had just one Colt firing blanks, rather than two in the book.
In some ways, the gun action in Child's books is more hardcore than in the series. But, in this Season 3 finale, Reacher had plenty of reasons to blow away some bad guys, including his final revenge on Quinn.
Why does Reacher choose this lightweight shotgun instead of an automatic? Other than being an old-fashioned guy, Reacher also wants something that will kill Quinn on the first shot, without anyone else getting hurt. Like he says in the book, it's a close-up gun. And, in the end, Reacher gets his vengeance on Quinn with the same weapon whose name inspired the entire story that's just ended.

Marvel's ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps' Reveals Mole Man as New Villain

Ahead of a movie premiere, virtually everything involving Marvel seems to be calculated. This is why the latest tidbit to surface before the release of Fantastic Four: First Steps was even more noteworthy. The latest Marvel movie will hit theaters on July 25, 2025, and slowly but surely, a few small leaks have come to light. The most recent came during a panel with the cast at CCXP Mexico, as Culture Crave revealed on X. During the clip, Joseph Quinn, who will play Johnny Storm/Human Torch in the new Fantastic Four film, dropped the news that a second villain is debuting in the film: Mole Man. "It's certainly a very stacked cast. We've got a lot of fantastic characters in there," said Quinn. "There's also Mole Man, who is wonderful in it. But Galactus is the big bad." The big question is whether Quinn made this comment on purpose or if it was a slip-up by the 31-year-old actor. Considering how tight-lipped Marvel likes to keep things ahead of movie releases, it'd be a surprise if Quinn dropped this out of nowhere when he was supposed to keep it under wraps. As Collider detailed, Mole Man is one of the Fantastic Four's "classic enemies in the comics" and appeared in The Fantastic Four #1 in 1961. As the site explains, there's no clear answer as to who will play Mole Man, but Paul Walter Hauser and John Malkovich's roles are still 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' Reveals Mole Man as New Villain first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 2, 2025

TV Ratings: ‘Squid Game' Rules, But Broadcast Series Make Strong Showing in Multiplatform Rankings

With streaming now the platform of choice for the largest share of TV viewers in the U.S., it would seem logical that a streaming show would top the ratings rather than a traditional network show. As it turns out, that's correct: Netflix's Squid Game is, by a sizable margin, the most-watched series of the 2024-25 season. But in Nielsen's multiplatform ratings, which measure viewing over five weeks and across all outlets, a number of broadcast series are still commanding large audiences. All of them average at least 11.5 million viewers per episode across their network showings and streaming over five weeks. CBS' Tracker is the top network show and fourth overall with 17.6 million viewers via CBS and Paramount+. Squid Game, whose second season premiered in late December, racked up 27.1 million viewers in the 35-day window. Netflix's Adolescence (19 million) and Prime Video's Reacher (18.1 million) rank second and third, and two other network series, first-year breakouts Matlock (CBS) and High Potential (ABC), are tied for fifth overall at 16.1 million viewers. This season is the first in which Nielsen has released multiplatform data showing how outlets compare. In the broadcast landscape alone, CBS leads the pack (as it does in linear ratings) with 9.1 million viewers in primetime. NBC is second at 7.2 million viewers, followed by ABC (6.9 million) and Fox (4.3 million). ABC has the biggest gain from Nielsen's linear ratings (which are measured over seven days), rising by 61 percent with streaming and the longer window. CBS improves by 59 percent with the longer multiplatform measure, while NBC grows by 41 percent and Fox, whose shows stream on Hulu but which doesn't have its own platform, adds 12 percent.
