President Donald Trump on Thursday appeared to offer a rationale for Ukraine to go on offense against Russia, notable rhetoric as the momentum around peace talks has stalled.
'It is very hard, if not impossible, to win a war without attacking an invaders country. It's like a great team in sports that has a fantastic defense, but is not allowed to play offense. There is no chance of winning! It is like that with Ukraine and Russia,' Trump said in a Truth Social post.
He continued, 'Crooked and grossly incompetent Joe Biden would not let Ukraine FIGHT BACK, only DEFEND. How did that work out? Regardless, this is a war that would have NEVER happened if I were President - ZERO CHANCE. Interesting times ahead!!!'
During the Biden administration, it was long-standing policy that Ukraine could not launch long-range American-made missiles into Russia. That changed in November 2024, following pressure from US allies.
Trump's comments come as the Kremlin has openly contradicted the White House on plans for a bilateral meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, suggesting that leader-level talks are far from imminent and that Putin has yet to agree to such a meeting.
Additionally, Russia launched a sweeping series of airstrikes on Ukraine overnight, including an attack on an American-owned manufacturing company that injured at least 15 people.
This is a developing story and will be updated.

Trump threatens "harsh measures" against Colorado if Tina Peters is not freed from prison

President Trump is once again demanding that Colorado officials " free" former Mesa County clerk Tina Peters from prison, this time adding a threat to "take harsh measures" if she is not let go. Why it matters: The remark, made Thursday on his Truth Social platform, is the latest attempt by Trump to intervene on behalf of Peters, one of the nation's most prominent 2020 election deniers. What he's saying: Trump called Peters "a brave and innocent Patriot who has been tortured by Crooked Colorado politicians" and criticized the state's mail-in ballot elections. He added that Peters, 69, "is an old woman, and very sick." Reality check: Federal authorities cannot overturn a state court conviction, raising questions about the premise of Trump's threat. Yes, but: The administration could target Colorado by withholding federal funds or pursuing legal action regarding the state's immigration laws. Catch up quick: Last October, a Colorado judge sentenced Peters to 8 ½ years and six months in jail after a jury found her guilty on seven of 10 counts related to her role in tampering with county voting equipment after the 2020 election. She faced a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The Department of Justice announced in March it would review Peters' case, in particular her sentence, and whether it was " oriented more toward inflicting political pain than toward pursuing actual justice." The latest: In July, Peters asked a federal court to free her on bond while she appeals her conviction, arguing that the state is trying to silence her in violation of her First Amendment rights. U.S. Chief Magistrate Judge Scott T. Varholak rejected the motion, saying there's no legal precedent for granting her request. The other side: Mesa County District Attorney Daniel P. Rubinstein, a Republican who prosecuted Peters, said earlier this year that politics did not play into her case.

Tiffany Haddish Roasts Donald Trump Without Saying His Name

Jimmy Kimmel Live guest host Tiffany Haddish didn't mention President Donald Trump during Monday night's monologue, but she seemed to have him in mind as she jokingly announced she was running for president herself. 'I've got all the qualifications to be president,' she said, then listed three things she has in common with Trump. 'I'm rich, I've been arrested a few times, and I always say crazy shit.' She has one other important qualification as well. 'We've had an actor as president, a reality host president, but now it's time to elect a comedian,' she said. 'Finally, a president who's funny on purpose, most of the time.' Haddish delivered a campaign-style speech unveiling a platform that includes paying taxes with old gift cards. 'We're gonna run this country, this government, like a company,' the comic and actor said. 'And that company is Sizzler.' Her platform includes requiring credit scores on dating site profiles, providing pastrami at all Subway locations, and retooling delivery robots to become sex toys. 'My campaign is built around a very simple idea: America, mind your own damn business,' she said. 'Doesn't that sound nice?' That promise called to mind something Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said as he ran for vice president on last year's Democratic ticket. 'In Minnesota, we respect our neighbors and the personal choices that they make,' he said on the campaign trail. 'And even if we wouldn't make the same choices for ourselves, we've got a golden rule: Mind your own damn business.' Mario Tama / Getty Images

Trump to join police, National Guard on D.C. patrol

Photo by Bonnie Cash/UPI | License Photo Aug. 21 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump said he will go out on patrol with Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police on Thursday night amid his federal crackdown on crime in the district. "I'm going to be going out tonight, I think, with the police and with the military, of course. So we're going to do a job," Trump told conservative radio host Todd Starnes on his show. "The National Guard is great. They've done a fantastic job." A senior White House official said that the details of the evening were still being worked out. White House officials said Thursday that there had been more than 600 arrests since federal officers were deployed in the city on Aug. 7. Of those, 251 were arrests of immigrants in the country illegally, the White House said. On Wednesday, Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth treated National Guard members to lunch at the city's Union Station. They were greeted with protests, which Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller derided. "We're going to ignore these stupid White hippies that all need to go home and take a nap because they're all over 90 years old," The Hill reported Miller as saying. "And we're going to get back to the business of protecting the American people and the citizens of Washington, D.C." A Washington Post-Schar School poll of 604 District residents published Wednesday found 65% did not think Trump's actions would make the city safer. About 80% of residents said they opposed Trump's executive order to federalize the city's police.
