Kerala May Deliver Double-Edged Mandate In Favour Of Congress-Led UDF
According to Vote Vibe survey agency, the 2026 edition of Kerala assembly polls, a strong anti-incumbency wave, a clear desire for change is set to see the downfall of Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF.
But the Congress-UDF faces a leadership challenge. Nonconformist Shashi Tharoor is the most popular choice as Vijayan's successor. Tharoor's popularity ratings are 28.4 per cent while his party rivals for the coveted post trail badly. For instance, AICC general secretary in charge of organisation, K C Venugopal is pegged at a poor 4.2 per cent while others, namely V D Satheeshan and Sunny Joseph, have popularity ratings of 15 per cent and 2 per cent, respectively. Other contenders such as Ramesh Chennithala and K Murleedharan have a support of 8.2 and 6 per cent popularity ratings.
Significantly, Vote Vibe has conducted the survey after Operation Sindoor which implies that Tharoor's unconventional stand has not undermined Thiruvananthapuram ratings within and outside the UDF-Congress circles. Tharoor was part of the government delegation that was sent abroad to propagate India's stand against terrorism.
Subsequently, some of the remarks made by Tharoor became a subject of controversy, drawing criticism from the grand old party. Tharoor went on to describe Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a 'national asset' in a write-up in a national daily.
Tharoor's popularity as indicated by Vote Vibe survey is going to pose multiple challenges for AICC Chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi. A number of UDF allies namely IUML, KC, RSP, CMP and KDP representatives reportedly favour Tharoor as UDF's chief ministerial face.
Some of the key findings of the survey are:
1. Strong Anti-Incumbency Wave: 47.9%
2. Strong Desire for Change: 62% want to replace their current MLA
3. Party Trust Dynamics: UDF leads with 38.9%
4. Leadership Issue: Shashi Tharoor leads (28.3%), but 27.1% are uncertain. LDF: KK Shailaja tops (24.2%), current CM Pinarayi Vijayan only 17.5%, with a massive 41.5% uncertain among LDF supporters.
5. Electoral Implications: Clear anti-establishment wave; UDF positioned as a change alternative.
In view of Vote Vibe findings, many wonder whether Kharge and Rahul Gandhi would risk their own credibility to push Venugopal to become the chief ministerial face in Kerala simply because most AICC office bearers and party leaders living in Delhi want him out as General Secretary in charge of Organisation or simply because they believe that Congress party's fortune will change once KCV is out from the national party headquarters or as a shadow of Rahul Gandhi?
Vote Vibe has also conducted an in-depth survey for Bengal stating that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee continues to enjoy significant public support, positioning her as a key player in the upcoming electoral contest. Mamata Banerjee remains the most popular choice for Chief Minister, with 41.7% support, the survey has concluded.

On TRF Terror Tag, China Says It's Against All Forms Of Terrorism: 'We Condemn Pahalgam Attack'
Last Updated: The statement comes after the US designated TRF, a proxy of Pakistan-based LeT, as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist group China on Friday denounced the Pahalgam terror attack and called on regional nations to strengthen counter‑terror cooperation. The statement comes after the United States designated The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist group. In a brief media briefing in Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said, 'China firmly opposes all forms of terrorism and strongly condemns the terrorist attack that occurred on April 22." Jian added that China urges neighbouring countries to 'enhance counter-terrorism cooperation and jointly maintain regional security and stability". Earlier today, the US State Department announced the TRF designation, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This move is expected to influence discussions in the UN Security Council's 1267 Committee—an international body that imposes asset freezes, travel bans and arms embargoes on terrorist entities. Under the 1267 sanctions regime, several Pakistani terror groups, including LeT, Jaish‑e‑Mohammad and Jamaat‑ud‑Dawa, along with leaders Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar, are already targeted. Following the Pahalgam attack, the Council condemned the incident on 25 April, though references to TRF and LeT were reportedly dropped after objections from Pakistan and China. According to Pakistan's Dawn newspaper, the US designation largely echoes India's stance that TRF is a front for LeT. Twenty‑six people were killed in the attack on 22 April in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. TRF initially claimed responsibility before retracting its admission amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor on 7 May against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan‑occupied Kashmir. Following four days of cross‑border drone and missile exchanges, India and Pakistan reached a ceasefire understanding on 10 May. News18 earlier reported that intelligence shared by New Delhi met the rigorous standards required by the US for such listings—a standard often regarded as more demanding than the UN sanctions process, where geopolitical interests can influence outcomes. The US listing of TRF also highlights how Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar allegedly attempted to shield the group. Notably, Dar reportedly took pride in removing references to TRF from the Security Council's condemnation message following the Pahalgam attack—an attack for which TRF itself had claimed responsibility. The successful designation by the US serves as both a validation of India's evidence and a diplomatic setback for efforts to obscure the group's role. It also reinforces TRF's identity as a front for the proscribed Lashkar-e-Taiba, affirming its operational ties and culpability in recent acts of terrorism. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. '$9bn gone': PBS, NPR defunded! Trump's public broadcasting budget axe gets Congress' green light
Congress approved a White House request to claw back $9 billion for foreign aid and public broadcasting, after Republicans bowed to President Donald Trump in an unusual surrender of congressional spending power. The House's 216-213 vote early Friday sent the package to Trump for his signature. Two Republicans, Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and Michael Turner of Ohio opposed the measure. The Senate approved the package in a predawn 51-48 vote the day before, overcoming the objections of two Republicans, Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, who argued that their party was ceding Congress' constitutional control over federal funding. The bulk of the funds targeted -- about $8 billion -- was for foreign assistance programs. The remaining $1.1 billion was for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which finances NPR and PBS. Patna: CM Nitish Kumar on Friday disclosed that the decision to provide 125 units of free power per house in the state was "on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi". Modi responded to the remark by folding his hands. The CM also thanked Modi for taking time off to visit different parts of Bihar almost every month. Lauding Modi for his assistance in development of Bihar, Nitish said, "PM announced a significant financial package for the state in July 2024 Union Budget, focusing on roads, health, industry, tourism, and flood control. Following this, the Feb 2025 Union Budget included announcements for the establishment of a Makhana Board, an airport, and financial support for the Western Kosi Canal in Bihar." "Recently, the central govt provided Bihar with the opportunity to host the Khelo India Youth Games, which is a matter of pride for the state. I pay my respects to the Prime Minister. He is doing excellent work. I once again extend my greetings and thanks to the PM. He visits Bihar and inaugurates and lays the foundation for various development projects," Nitish said. Assailing his previous Congress and RJD-led govts for poor development, the CM said, "You all know how the condition in the state before 2005 was. No work was done. On Nov 24, 2005, when the NDA govt was formed here, we started working on development. We have been working for the growth of Bihar for 20 years. Earlier, Bihar's annual budget used to be only Rs 24,000 crore. Now it has increased to more than Rs 3 lakh crore. Work is being done in the interest of the people. I thank the Prime Minister for his special attention to Bihar." In his address, PM Modi praised Nitish for his efforts towards the development of Bihar. He said Nitish govt has provided jobs to millions of youths in the state with complete transparency and has also resolved to create employment opportunities on a large scale. "Through the Jeevika Didi scheme, Nitish Kumar has paved the way for women to become self-reliant. The Nitish govt has increased the social security pension scheme from Rs 400 to Rs 1,100 per month, with the money being directly deposited into the beneficiaries' bank accounts. This decision will bring significant relief to the elderly, differently-abled individuals, and widowed sisters," the PM said.
