Business case approved for city tram extension
A business case for the next phase of extension work to Birmingham's tram system has been approved after councillors heard the line would "unlock" the redevelopment at Birmingham City's new football stadium.
West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) bosses said completing sections three and four, between Park Street and Meriden Street, was "crucial" for the Midland Metro line to reach the east of the city and Blues' £3bn Sports Quarter development.
The work is part of the Birmingham Eastside Extension project and will also provide a transport link to HS2 at Curzon Street and support regeneration in Digbeth.
The first phase was completed in August.
Birmingham City Council leader John Cotton said the importance of the new route went beyond the benefits to Digbeth and was about how the extension could help to "unlock the full potential" of east Birmingham.
"The Metro extension has to be a key part of how we drive that change," Cotton added.
The WMCA board approved £107m of funding for the second phase of the project, of which West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker said he had fast-tracked more than £62m to enable the phase to start this year.
"This line is about more than transport, it's about connecting people in Birmingham and the Black Country to opportunity.
"It's already drawing in major investment and helping to breathe new life into this part of the city centre," he added.
However, Parker said the extension had "taken too long".
"The sooner we deliver it, the sooner we bring in the jobs, homes and regeneration promised by the Sports Quarter."
Blues' proposals include a new 60,000-seater stadium, sports campus of training facilities, a new academy, community pitches as well as leisure, commercial and residential development.
Work at the section three site, from Park Street to New Canal Street (Curzon Street Station), cannot begin until 2026 when HS2 hands over the area to Midland Metro.
However, transport bosses hope to start the main construction work on section four, New Canal Street to Meriden Street, later this year, with preparatory works already under way.

New Metro line to be built as part of £1.85bn deal
A new Tyne and Wear Metro line will be built for the first time in 30 years, as part of a £1.85bn government investment. The money would help meet the cost of the route to Washington, Sunderland, with funds also expected to come from the private sector, the North East Combined Authority (NECA) said. It is hoped the new line, estimated to cost about £900m, will start running in 2033. Nexus, which operates the Metro system, said it was "a historic moment". "This project is going to be transformative for the people of Washington and our customers, opening a new Metro route corridor along the northern part of the former Leamside Line to one of our region's largest towns," said Nexus managing director Cathy Massarella. Chancellor Rachel Reeves said the government would award £15.6bn in total to areas across the UK. A feasibility study into the new Metro route is already under way, alongside design work for the stations, bridges and other infrastructure. North East Mayor Kim McGuinness said she secured the investment after raising it with Reeves. The money would also help create a so-called Angel Network, she said, a public transport system which would use contactless smart travel across buses, Metros and trains. "This is a game-changing moment for the people of our region, who can look forward to a truly world-class integrated public transport network, safer walking and cycling routes throughout our towns and cities, better local roads and a massive acceleration on our journey to an EV [electric vehicle] future," McGuinness said. The leader of Sunderland City Council, councillor Michael Mordey, called the announcement "great news" for Washington and the whole city. He said the new line would "transform public transport for people living in Washington" and help connect people to jobs at nearby Nissan and International Advanced Manufacturing Park. "We have waited a long time to see Metro reach Washington with a direct line from the city centre," Mordey added. The funding has been agreed as the latest phase of the region's City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS2). It will cover the period from 2027 to 2032. The package would also fund highways maintenance, walking and cycling routes, hundreds of new EV charging points and new measures to make bus journey times more reliable, NECA said. STM strike could disrupt Montreal Metro and bus service for several days
Maintenance workers with Montreal's public transit service are planning to strike this month, leading to service disruptions outside of rush hour on both the bus and Metro lines. Quebec's labour tribunal ruled that workers with the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) can go on strike from June 9 at 12 a.m. to June 17 at 11:59 p.m. The union representing the workers, the Syndicat du transport de Montréal-CSN, and the STM agreed to provide essential services only during peak hours and late in the evening on June 9, 10, 11, 16 and 17. There will be extended service periods on June 12 and full service over Canadian Grand Prix weekend from June 13 to June 15, when the city sees a significant increase in traffic. The president of the union says the exception for Grand Prix weekend is due to security reasons and not because they're trying to appease the Formula 1 clientele. "They sell about 100,000 tickets each day for the Grand Prix," said Bruno Jeannotte. "So, considering that we're talking about 100,000 trips between Île Sainte-Hélène and downtown Montreal, if there's an emergency on the island or whatever, we have no choice but to be ready to react." Speaking at an unrelated news conference Tuesday, Mayor Valérie Plante said she was relieved the Grand Prix weekend had been spared of service disruptions, adding that she hopes both parties in the dispute come to a solution quickly so as to not penalize commuters. The union, which represents 2,400 maintenance workers at the STM, has been negotiating with the STM for over a year, asking for better working conditions like better schedules, and to scale back on outsourcing. Jeannotte says negotiations are still underway and could even continue during the strike, adding they're not aiming for an unlimited strike. "We're willing to negotiate certain points but not on the issue of subcontracting or privatizing the STM's public systems," he said. Éric Alan Caldwell, the chair of the Société de transport de Montréal (STM), Speaking alongside Plante, STM board chair Éric Alan Caldwell said the agency will hold a news conference Wednesday to address service disruptions during the strike. "We're working to have the best agreement for our workers but also for the financial health of public transit in order to maintain demand and see it grow," he said. "We're dealing with a situation where we have to fit into the money that is available for transit and that's why [there's] negotiations on both parts." On its website, where the transit plan for next week is outlined, the STM says its users should plan accordingly and encourages them to use active modes of transportation to get by or to work from home. Over the weekend, the union representing the STM's bus drivers, Metro operators, station attendants and adapted transit drivers also voted in favour of a strike. The union has been re-negotiating its collective agreement with the STM which expired in January and is making similar demands to the maintenance workers, as well as a salary increase. "This negotiation is part of something bigger, which is really the public transit funding crisis," said Plante.
