
GM mosquitoes: inside the lab breeding six-legged agents in the war on malaria

Bilski, a research and development team leader for the biotechnology company Oxitec, is carrying out one of the early stages in the process of making genetically modified (GM) mosquitoes.
It is hoped the insects that hatch will prove instrumental in the fight against diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, Zika and chikungunya of which mosquitoes are vectors.
Last year, Oxitec released tens of thousands of GM mosquitoes in Djibouti, where there has been a resurgence of malaria caused by an invasive species. It was the first time such mosquitoes have been released in east Africa and the second time on the continent.
It follows multiple releases of modified mosquitoes in Florida and Brazil to combat dengue fever, a neglected tropical disease.
The impact of these mosquitoes on malaria transmission could be significant, believes Lottie Renwick, head of strategy for Malaria No More UK. 'They will play a really major role and be gamechanging,' she says, but adds that the intervention needs to work alongside other tools such as mosquito nets and injections. Malaria is transmitted by female mosquitoes and is one of the biggest killers of children under five. According to the World Health Organization, in 2023 there were an estimated 263m cases of malaria and 597,000 deaths in 83 countries.

Djibouti, an east African country of a million people, had been close to eliminating the disease, but cases jumped from just 27 in 2012 to more than 73,000 in 2020. The cause was a species of mosquito that came from south Asia and the Arabian peninsula into Africa.
The Anopheles stephensi mosquito has since been detected in Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia and Kenya, as well as Nigeria and Ghana in west Africa. According to one study, if this mosquito is left unchecked an additional 126 million people on the continent will be at risk of malaria. It is a big threat because it thrives in urban environments, unlike other malaria-carrying mosquitoes in Africa that primarily breed in rural areas. Cities in Africa are growing rapidly, with more than half of Africans predicted to be urban dwellers by 2035.
Anopheles stephensi has also been found to be resistant to many of the insecticides used to control mosquito populations. They bite in the evening before most people's bedtime – not in the middle of the night like other mosquitoes – making bed nets less effective as protection.
The government of Djibouti – aware of the work to develop and deploy GM mosquitoes to fight invasive species that spread dengue fever in Brazil – has partnered with Oxitec to tackle the threat.

White shelves line the walls; on one side of the room are trays of water with mosquito larvae in them, while on the adjacent wall are plastic boxes filled with fully grown insects. One box has a contraption containing blood on top for the female mosquitoes to feed on. Inside the box the mosquitoes' bottoms are pointing up, a sign that these insects carry the parasite that causes malaria.
It takes four or five days for the 5-30% of the eggs that usually survive the injection to hatch into larvae. In total, an egg typically takes about 14 days to develop into an adult mosquito.
In another room a few doors down, Anna Schoenauer, a team leader, is also glued to a microscope. When she shines blue light on the slide, a group of mosquitoes, magnified on a screen, can be seen wriggling around, glowing fluorescent green. The lab-produced mosquitoes carry a 'self-limiting' gene that blocks normal cellular processes, which means if they mate, any female offspring will die. The male progeny, which do not bite, will survive and go on to mate with other wild females. With sustained releases of these 'friendly mosquitoes', more females die off, greatly reducing the mosquito population and the spread of malaria.
Scientists at Oxitec and malaria and mosquito experts insist these mosquitoes are safe. After evaluating the risk, the US Food and Drug Administration in 2016 and the US Environmental Protection Agency in 2022 confirmed that the mosquitoes did not pose a threat to humans or the environment.

There are no results published yet from the work going on in Djibouti, and Grey Frandsen, chief executive officer at Oxitec, acknowledges that much work remains to be done.
'We're working on the invasive species but there are multiple species that transmit malaria,' he says. 'There is no silver bullet in the malaria fight.'
Currently, most of the funding going into technologies such as this comes from international donors and philanthropists. With the Trump administration's shutdown of USAID, the landscape for international humanitarian work has changed, but Frandsen is undeterred.
'We recognise what's happening, and the impact it might be having on the international health community, but this is our time to shine,' he says.
'This is when disruptive tools are needed the most. This is where new technologies have to now play a more important role than ever.'

I was accused of cheating after my baby was born with a different skin colour – there's a perfectly reasonable reason
A MUM has revealed how strangers accused her of cheating on her husband after her daughter was born with a different skin colour to the rest of the family. Belvana Abeli's, daughter, Zayana Domingos, two, was born with albinism and has light skin, hair and eyes, while her parents and two other siblings are black. 5 5 The 36-year-old explained how her daughter is regularly discriminated against for looking different, with strangers asking if she is adopted and have even accused Belvana of cheating on her husband due to how their daughter looks. Belvana, from Cape Town, South Africa, said: 'The reaction to her having albinism was really well within our family but externally, there were a lot of questions. 'People have questioned whether I cheated on my husband with a white person – it's a lot to deal with. 'People will ask things about why my one daughter is black and the other is white or ask if she's adopted. 'It's offensive, but people unconsciously do it.' After suffering with Covid-19 during her pregnancy, the mum had to have an emergency C-section at just 28 weeks. When she saw her newborn baby for the first time, Belvana was left questioning why her baby had a different skin colour and ginger hair. However, after genetic testing, doctors confirmed Zayana had been born with albinism, a life-long condition. Initially, the mum-of-three was unsure whether there was any family history of the condition and later learned that her grandmother's great-uncle had albinism and also suffered from discrimination. 'Giving birth to an albino baby was a surprise as albinism was not known to run in any of our families,' she says. 'Doctors initially said her skin and hair would darken with time, but after a few days in hospital, we were informed that she had albinism. 'As time went by her skin and eyes got lighter and lighter. We already had a black daughter and weren't expecting an albino baby at all.' Zayana has two siblings, one older sister and one younger brother who are both black. Zivah Domingos, five, is the eldest of the trio whilst Zander Domingos, five months, is the youngest. People with albinism will often suffer from a lack of vision due to the reduced amount of melanin in the layer of cells in the eye as well as having a higher risk of sunburn and skin cancer. After falling pregnant with her third baby, Belvana was curious as to what colour skin her next child would have after having an albino baby. She consulted the doctor to see if there were any tests that could be done to determine the possible albinism. Although she didn't mind, Belvana wanted to minimise any possible shock. Speaking about her 'miracle' albino baby, Belvana adds: 'Having an albino child has been challenging at times due to the lack of education about albinism, for example, being told that our daughter needs a special school because albinism is a disability. 5 5 'But it has also been a great blessing to us because it has given us the opportunity to share our story and increase knowledge about albinism.' Her eldest daughter, Zivah, has started to ask questions about why her little sister looks different to the rest of the family. She added that Zayana is too young to question her looks, but her mum knows that the questions will be asked when she gets older. WHAT IS ALBINISM? Albinism is an inherited genetic condition where people are born without any kind of pigment in their body. Their body is unable to produce melanin (which gives you colour), and can affect the skin, eyes and hair. This causes those who are born an albino to have very pale skin, eyes and hair, and the condition can affect all races. There are two main kinds of albinism, which are oculocutaneous albinism and ocular albinism. Albinism affects around one person in every 20,000. 'When I was pregnant with my son, my daughter was asking me if he was going to be white or black,' she says. 'My eldest is coming to a point where she's starting to understand that Zayana is different to others in the family. 'But, she is our miracle baby, and we are super fortunate to have her in our lives.' 5

For some Zimbabwe children with heart disease, a rare lifeline restores hope
Tubes snaked across 3-year-old Gracious Chikova's bandaged chest in the intensive care unit of a government hospital in Zimbabwe's capital, Harare. Just a day earlier, surgeons had opened her tiny heart to repair a defect that threatened her life. Now she sipped a drink from a syringe, her mother anxiously watching her every breath. 'I had given up. Those with money have been taking their children to India for surgery, but I simply couldn't afford it,' said Vimbainashe Chakanungwa as she helped her daughter sip her meal. Chakanungwa's monthly salary as a teacher is about $300, barely enough for household basics, let alone surgery. Gracious is one of 10 children who received free open-heart surgery in July at Parirenyatwa Hospital from a visiting team of Egyptian surgeons working alongside Zimbabwean doctors. In a country with just a handful of cardiothoracic specialists and chronic shortages of functioning equipment in public hospitals, the 'heart camp' offered hope to families who can't imagine raising the $15,000 needed for surgery abroad. Zimbabwe has only five cardiothoracic surgeons, including Dr. Kudzai Kanyepi, the country's first and only female heart surgeon. 'There is no medication that can replace surgery. The burden of disease remains, and unfortunately some of the children pass away without getting the help they desperately need,' Kanyepi said. 'It is the reason why we continue to work in our country. There is nothing greater than helping your own people.' Zimbabwe resumed open-heart operations in 2023 after they were paused in 2018 due to economic turmoil. Since then, local surgeons have operated on 55 children. Another 19 have benefited from two surgical camps last year and in July with Egyptian assistance and supported by nongovernmental organizations such as Gift of Life International. Globally, about one in every 100 children is born with congenital heart disease, making it the world's most common birth defect, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In Zimbabwe, an estimated 4,500 children are born with heart disease each year, with many unable to access surgery, said Dr. Simukayi Machawira, head of cardiology at the hospital. Of those, 30% — or around 1,200 infants — are likely to die in their first year if untreated, he said. 'You can imagine, it's quite a lot of children,' he said. Dr. Hesham Shawky, the Egyptian team leader, has organized similar camps in Kenya and Uganda. 'This is the only solution for many people in Africa because they can't afford private care,' he said. On the ward in Zimbabwe, mothers hovered over their children, relief etched on their faces. Machines beeped softly as nurses adjusted tubes. One baby slept beside a balloon scrawled with a smiley face. For Chakanungwa, the joy over her child was hard to measure. 'I had resorted to prayer, just hoping for a miracle,' Chakanungwa said, smiling. 'It's impossible to open my heart to show my gratitude and happiness. I was afraid that I could lose my baby, but here is the baby.
