Cork restaurant with two Michelin stars announces replacement after chef-patron steps down

restaurant at the luxury Castlemartyr Resort in east
Co Cork

Crepel had served as executive chef since the restaurant's opening in September 2022 and pursued ambitious plans to quickly achieve two Michelin stars. In March 2023, six months after opening, the restaurant achieved its first Michelin star, with the second one awarded in January of last year.
Lewis Barker, originally from Leeds in the UK, will join Terre from Singapore. He was the youngest chef in Singapore to earn a Michelin star at 27 at Vianney Massot, six months after its opening. Barker was most recently head chef at the one-Michelin-starred Sommer, which closed in October of last year.
Crepel has said he will remain on in his position at Terre until the end of September with Barker expected to take over on October 1st.

Castlemartyr Resort was bought in 2021 for €20 million by Dr Stanley Quek and Peng Loh whose international hospitality portfolio includes hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants in Australia, Singapore, China, the UK and Ireland. They spent €8 million upgrading the hotel, which included adding a second restaurant in a 17th century manor on the estate, Terre.
In his statement last month Crepel said: 'Building Terre has been one of the most beautiful and meaningful journeys of my career. We created more than a restaurant, we shaped a space with soul, purpose, and intention.'
Following Sommer restaurant's closure in Singapore it was signalled Barker would remain within its ownership group, Ebb & Flow, led by chief executive Lim Kian Chun. His decision to now move to Co Cork may raise eyebrows in the Singaporean food world as Quek and Loh are big competitors of Lim Kian Chun in the fine dining scene there.

Barker describes his cooking as classically rooted in the French technique, modernised through local surroundings and flavours experienced from his time in Asia. His culinary profile is a good fit for Terre which serves contemporary cuisine with Asian flavours.
'I am excited at the challenge of leading Terre into the future and being situated in such a beautiful part of the world,' Barker said in a statement.
'My aim is to continue to preserve the ethos of Terre, and I look forward to building on that foundation alongside the talented team with a cuisine that celebrates Ireland's incredible produce and culinary heritage'.

The concept of 'leapfrogging' over outdated infrastructure is an attractive one. Many countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, have bypassed the need for costly and complex landline networks by adopting mobile phone technology directly. Similarly, in parts of India and Southeast Asia, mobile banking has flourished where traditional banking infrastructure was non-existent. China's rapid development of high-speed rail is another example, enabled in part by the underdevelopment of its previous rail network. So when one of Ireland's foremost business leaders suggests Dublin could leapfrog its antiquated transport infrastructure, the idea is worth considering. Dermot Desmond proposes that instead of building MetroLink, the city should prepare for the arrival of autonomous vehicles, which he believes will meet its transport needs. Unfortunately, Desmond's suggestion misses the point entirely. Set aside for a moment the widespread scepticism over the supposed timeline for the adoption of this technology. And accept that AI-guided transport will significantly reduce car ownership and optimise traffic flow. In theory, AI could indeed transform urban mobility and promote more sustainable transport. But Desmond's vision overlooks Dublin's fundamental issue: the sheer number of vehicles clogging surface streets. His proposal fails to consider the central purpose of the MetroLink project, which is not simply to improve access to the airport but to create a network that enables higher-density development in order to help meet Ireland's climate commitments and address the glaring need for sustainable urban living. READ MORE Instead, Desmond's futuristic vision risks creating a new kind of gridlock, as fleets of robotaxis – some empty, some occupied – converge on the congested Victorian bottlenecks around the city. As Colombian politician Enrique Peñalosa stated: 'A developed country is not a place where the poor have cars, it's where the rich use public transportation'. Whether driverless or not, that is the vision that remains to be achieved.

European markets post biggest weekly gain in 12 weeks

European shares posted their biggest weekly gain in 12 weeks on Friday, as banking stocks continued to drive the benchmark index upwards, while investors watched for signs of a potential Russia-Ukraine ceasefire. Dublin The Irish index of shares ended the week largely flat, as gains in banking stocks were offset by weakness in some other index heavyweights. Shares in AIB gained just under 1 per cent by the close of the session, ending the week at €6.98. Bank of Ireland performed better, adding 1.1 per cent and ending at €12.73. Permanent TSB was up 3.2 per cent, but volumes were thinner. READ MORE Ryanair showed modest gains, adding 0.27 per cent, while Glanbia gained half a per cent. It was a weaker day for food group Kerry, which shed 1.3 per cent. Insulation specialist Kingspan was 0.8 per cent off the pace, after reporting record revenues, finishing the session at €71. London British stocks closed mixed as traders digested Thursday's Bank of England rate decision that reignited inflation worries. The benchmark FTSE 100 closed 0.06 per cent lower, but registered a weekly gain of 0.3 per cent. The more domestically-focused midcap FTSE 250 index rose 0.1 per cent and posted a weekly gain of 1.2 per cent. In the market, industrial metal miners rose 2 per cent, tracking higher copper prices. Two online influencers found in breach of advertising standards over product posts

Two influencers have been found in breach of advertising standards for failing to make it more clear that posts promoting BPerfect Cosmetic products were in fact advertisements. One, Julie Haynes, who hosts a podcast and who posts on Instagram under the title Twins and Me, was also the subject of complaints with regard to her promotion of Estrid Studios products. The complaints were over what the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) found to be a failure to adhere to guidelines on the labelling of posts as advertising. With regard to the BPerfect Cosmetic complaints, on-screen notices were found to have involved text that was partly obscured, so it was not instantly clear to viewers it was an advertisement. READ MORE One complainant also suggested Ms Haynes was using a filter when applying the cosmetics , something that would affect how the products appeared on her skin. Responding to the BPerfect complaint, an agent for Ms Haynes denied the filter suggestion, but the complaint was upheld. No response was received by the ASA with regard to the Estrid advertising complaint. The watchdog was critical about the lack of a response. It is the second time in a matter of weeks the ASA has upheld complaints against Ms Haynes , who has more than 200,000 Instagram followers. Another influencer, Sarah O'Connor, who posts on Instagram as @sarahburke_x and has more than 60,000 followers, was also found to have failed to label clearly as an advertisement a presentation to camera she did promoting BPerfect products. The advertising standards watchdog also upheld a complaint against Ryanair . A customer said they had bought a flight in a promotion billed on the company's website as a 'big summer sale', which included the claim 'prices will rise'. The customer said the price of some flights actually went down afterwards and a month later the one they bought was still available for a lower price online. Ryanair said – at the time it was responding to the ASA about the complaint – that the flight cost more, so its advertising had been accurate. However, the complaint was upheld. So too was one against a television advertisement for the Dacia Sandero car. It was suggested the commercial contained depictions of the vehicle being driven without due care and attention, at speed and by people who seemed distracted as they were pictured singing. 'The complainant conceded that while it was likely the advertisement was filmed in a controlled environment they did not find it acceptable to depict unsafe driving styles and behaviours,' the ASA said. 'They believed this to be especially inappropriate in the context of recent deaths on our roads.' Other complaints to be upheld included one against discount supermarket Lidl by its rival Aldi. In a social media and press campaign run by Lidl, a rosette was featured at one point with the wording 'Ireland's best value supermarket'. The press version also included the line: 'The results are in. Lidl is Ireland's best value supermarket.' Aldi complained that the impression had been given that an independent process had taken place and its rival had won an award. The ASA acknowledged the claim contained in the advertisement was based on data provided by a third party. However, it said insufficient information had been submitted to it to allow a judgment on whether the subsequent claims were justified. It said it considered the advertising 'was likely to mislead consumers'. Another complaint upheld was against Zeon Healthcare in relation to claims it made for its Macu Save food supplement. A complainant suggested the claim that the product was 'clinically researched' gave the impression it was a licensed medicine that could help treat age-related macular degeneration, an eye condition. Three different complaints were upheld in this instance.
