Fire at Iran's largest oil refinery kills 1 in the country's southwest - Region

Al-Ahram Weekly20-07-2025
A fire at Iran's oldest and largest refiner in the southwest killed one person, state media reported Sunday.
A leaky pump in an under-repair unit at Abadan refinery caused the fire on Saturday, killing a worker, according to the state-owned IRAN newspaper. Firefighters put out the blaze in two hours, and operations remained unaffected, the report said.
Iran's deputy parliament speaker, Ali Nikzad, confirmed Sunday that some workers were also injured, media outlets said.
Abadan oil refinery, some 670 kilometres (nearly 416 miles) from the capital Tehran, began its operation in 1912. It is the biggest in the Islamic Republic, producing about 25% of the country's fuel with more than 5,200,000 barrels of oil refined daily.
Several fires have broken out across Iran over the past week at residential and commercial buildings, with authorities saying gas leaks and electrical short-circuiting were to blame.
Iran is one of the world's major producers of oil, though sanctions by Western countries have limited its sales.

Formula One: Ferrari renews team principal Vasseur's contract despite difficult season - Omni sports

Ferrari handed team principal Fred Vasseur a new contract on Thursday in a sign of 'trust in Fred's leadership' following speculation about his future, with the Italian team yet to win a Formula 1 race in 2025. In an announcement ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Ferrari said the new deal was a 'multiple-year contract,' without giving further details. Lewis Hamilton gave Vasseur his backing last month after reports in Italian media suggested his job could be in question. Ferrari last won a race in October and, while it's second in the constructors' championship behind McLaren, neither Hamilton nor Charles Leclerc has consistently been able to challenge the leading McLaren drivers this year. 'Today we want to recognize what has been built and commit to what still needs to be achieved,' Ferrari chief executive Benedetto Vigna said in a statement. 'It reflects our trust in Fred's leadership — a trust rooted in shared ambition, mutual expectations and clear responsibility. We move forward with determination and focus, united in our pursuit of the level of performance Ferrari has to aim for.' Vasseur joined Ferrari as team principal at the start of 2023. He was Hamilton's team boss in junior series in the mid-2000s and played a role in convincing the seven-time champion to leave Mercedes for Ferrari for 2025 in a move which shook up F1. Vasseur also previously worked with Renault and Sauber in F1. Hamilton, who hasn't finished on the podium in a Grand Prix race since joining the Italian team, has been holding meetings with senior executives to push for improvements and a voice in developing the team's car for 2026. Next year brings sweeping changes to the regulations. 'I'm grateful for the trust Ferrari continues to place in me. This renewal is not just a confirmation — it's a challenge to keep progressing, to stay focused, and to deliver,' Vasseur said. "Over the past 30 months, we've laid strong foundations, and now we must build on them with consistency and determination. We know what's expected, and we're all fully committed to meeting those expectations and taking the next step forward together. Egypt Suez Canal extends discount for large container ships till end-December - Urban & Transport

The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has extended a 15 percent discount on transit fees for heavy tonnage container ships until 31 December 2025. The extended discount applies to vessels with a net tonnage of 130,000 or more, whether loaded or empty, according to a SCA circular issued on Tuesday. The incentive, initially launched on 15 May for 90 days, came as a direct response to requests from shipping companies that faced increased costs due to longer routes taken during recent Red Sea tensions. It mainly aimed to encourage major shipping lines to resume using the canal. The decision also coincides with a period of relative stability in the Red Sea region. Hopes for restored stability in this vital global shipping corridor were boosted by a ceasefire between the US and Yemen's Houthi rebels, brokered by Oman on 6 May after weeks of US airstrikes. Since the start of Israel's war on Gaza in October 2023, the Houthis have targeted Israeli-linked ships, disrupting traffic and forcing major carriers to reroute via the Cape of Good Hope — a more protracted and expensive journey. The disruption slashed the Suez Canal revenues by over 60 percent in 2024, costing Egypt an estimated $7 billion. Signs of recovery began in February, with SCA Chairman Osama Rabie announcing the return of several vessels to the canal route over the past few weeks. The Suez Canal links the Red Sea to the Mediterranean and attracts 12 percent of global trade. The canal is among Egypt's key foreign currency sources, along with tourism and remittances. US imposes sanctions on shipping empire tied to Iranian leaders - Region

The United States on Wednesday slapped sanctions on a shipping empire controlled by the son of a top political advisor to Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Treasury Department said sanctions were being imposed on companies and vessels (more than 50 ships) operated by Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani, the son of Ali Shamkhani, who has been subject to US sanctions since 2020. The US government targeted more than 50 individuals and entities. The US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said in a statement that these are its "most significant Iran-related sanctions since 2018."
