Rwanda-backed rebels kill 80 in DR Congo as Qatar aims for peace
The army said in a statement late on Friday that it is 'fiercely condemning a series of mass murders of civilians by the [Rwandan Defense Force]/M23-AFC coalition' in
South Kivu , including 80 people on August 4 in the village of Nyaborongo, and six civilians, including two minors, on July 24 in the village of Lumbishi.
'In addition to this excessive criminality, the M23/AFC is engaged in the forced recruitment of young people, including minors, to join their illegal organisation,' the statement said.
The continuing violence could threaten Qatar-led efforts to get Congo and the rebels to sign a permanent peace deal by the goal of August 18. One of the deal's conditions is the protection of civilians and the safe return of millions of people displaced by the conflict.
There was no immediate comment from M23.
Earlier this month, the UN human rights chief said that M23 killed 319 people over the past month in a different part of the region, describing the toll as one of the largest documented in such attacks since the M23 rebels resurfaced in 2022.

As Trump prepares to meet Putin, peace prospects in Ukraine war seem slim, analysts say
The stage is set for what could mark a turning point – or yet another false dawn – in efforts to end Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II. In a dramatic escalation of diplomatic efforts to resolve the grinding Ukraine conflict, now in its fourth year, US President Donald Trump is hosting Russian President Vladimir Putin for face-to-face talks in Alaska on Friday. Security will be extraordinarily tight: airspace over the port city will be closed on Friday and Saturday and the US Secret Service will work closely with Russia's Federal Protective Service to ensure the leaders' safety. Indeed, the meeting's exact venue has not been officially disclosed, though The New York Times and local media reported that it would be held at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, a combined US Air Force and Army base in Anchorage on Friday. While observers worldwide fixate on how the summit might shape the war in Ukraine – and possibly scramble the geopolitical landscape – the White House has worked to temper expectations. On Tuesday, Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, acknowledged that with 'only one party' present, a deal was not possible. Despite strong objections from Kyiv and Brussels, neither Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky nor any EU official will take part in the talks. The White House said that Zelensky was not included because the invitation to meet came directly from Putin.

Russian offensive into Ukraine seeks to gain leverage ahead of Trump-Putin talks
Russian forces have made a sudden thrust into eastern Ukraine near the mining town of Dobropillia in a move that may be designed to increase the pressure on Ukraine to cede land as the US and Russian presidents prepare to meet. Ukraine's authoritative DeepState war map showed on Tuesday that Russian forces had quickly advanced up to 10km (6.2 miles) north in two prongs in recent days, part of their drive to take full control of Ukraine's Donetsk region. DeepState said they had advanced near three villages on a section of the frontline associated with the two key Ukrainian strongholds of Pokrovsk and Kostyantynivka. US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to discuss a possible deal to end the war in Ukraine when they meet in Alaska on Friday. Unconfirmed media reports say Putin has told Trump he wants Ukraine to hand over the part of the Donetsk region that Russia does not control. There was no immediate comment on the battlefield development from Moscow. Ukrainian military spokesperson Viktor Trehubov said only small groups were penetrating defensive lines, and this did not amount to a breakthrough. Play Pasi Paroinen, a military analyst with the Finland-based Black Bird Group, said the situation had escalated rapidly, with Russian forces infiltrating past Ukrainian lines to a depth of roughly 17km (10 miles) during the past three days.

Fourth landmine blast in 4 weeks threatens Thai-Cambodian peace deal, 12 injured so far
Thai soldier was injured by a landmine near the Cambodian border on Tuesday, the Thai army said, days after the Southeast Asian neighbours agreed to a ceasefire following last month's deadly five-day conflict. The soldier's left ankle was severely injured when he stepped on the mine while patrolling along a routine border route about 1km (0.62 miles) from Ta Moan Thom temple in Thailand's Surin province, the army said in a statement. The soldier is being treated at a hospital, it said. The incident is clear evidence that Cambodia had violated the ceasefire as well as international agreements like the Ottawa Convention against landmines, Thai army spokesman Major-General Winthai Suvaree said in the statement. It was the fourth time in less than a month that Thai soldiers have been injured by mines during patrols along the border. So far, 12 have been injured and four, including the ranger on Tuesday morning, have lost their legs, the Bangkok Post reported. On Saturday, three soldiers were injured by a landmine in an area between Thailand's Sisaket and Cambodia's Preah Vihear provinces. The blast pointed to covert use of weapons by the Cambodian troops, Winthai said, according to Bloomberg. Two earlier incidents led to the downgrading of diplomatic relations and triggered the clashes.
