TV legend renews Coronation Street contract to stay on into next year

Metroa day ago

Coronation Street troublemaker Cassie Plummer is set to be on our screens for a while longer, as actress Claire Sweeney has renewed her contract with the ITV soap.
The former Brookside star first arrived on the cobbles in 2023 as Evelyn Plummer's (Maureen Lipman) estranged daughter.
In recent months, Cassie caused quite a stir when she was caught drugging Ken Barlow (William Roache) with antihistamines.
She had been hired as his carer when his health deteriorated, and in order to assure that he still needed her so she could keep her job, she took desperate measures to ensure he still felt unwell.
Eventually, Ken caught on to what she was doing and fired her, with the rest of the Coronation Street residents shunning her in solidarity with the pensioner.
However, it appears she won't be letting her neighbours drive her out completely, with Cassie set to appear on Coronation Street until at least 2026.
Metro understands that Claire Sweeney has signed a new contract with the show.
'Claire loves being on Corrie – it's a dream job, so she was delighted to sign a new deal,' a source told The Sun. More Trending
'With the big Emmerdale crossover coming in 2026, there's also a hope that she'll be in that too. It's a great opportunity to be part of soap history so who wouldn't want to be involved?'
It was recently announced that Coronation Street and Emmerdale will be teaming up in the new year for a special crossover episode, as changes to their schedules come into affect.
Characters from the Dales and Weatherfield will interact on screen for the first time ever in the exciting episode, which will affect subsequent storylines.

7 best shows to binge if you're already missing Doctor Who after finale

The second season of Doctor Who's run with Ncuti Gatwa came to an end this Saturday, capping off a batch of episodes that introduced a new companion and forever changed the show's lore. It was a lot of take in, as we travelled along through eight episodes trying to return Belinda (Varada Sethu) to her home planet. So if, like us, you're reeling from the two-part finale in the Tardis, we have some palate cleanser TV shows you can turn to while we wait for news of what is next in the Whoniverse. We don't yet know when – or even (gulp) if – the beloved BBC show will be back on air. So what better time to get stuck into something similar? We've compiled a list of shows to turn to in your time of need, some of which even feature characters Whovians will already know. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. From Doctor Who spin-offs to shows that are just a bit timey-wimey, here are seven options to fill that Tardis-shaped hole in your life. This a Doctor Who spin-off for the younger ones in the house, starring one of the most beloved companions to ever travel across the universe at the Doctor's side. Sarah Jane Smith, played by the late great Elisabeth Sladen, joined the Third and Fourth Doctors in the 70s. This might have first aired on CBBC, but it has everything an adult Whovian can enjoy – including guest appearances from David Tennant and Matt Smith. This answers the question of what becomes of those the Doctor has crossed paths with and teases the possibility that there's always a Slitheen or the Judoon just around the corner, even on a humdrum suburban street. The Sarah Jane Adventures is available to stream on BBC iPlayer. Another hit Doctor Who spin-off, but Torchwood is definitely not for kids. This is Doctor Who with a dark, sexy and violent rebrand – in this instance, you might have to tune in to get a sense of what we mean. The BBC miniseries stars the Ninth Doctor's companion Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and his team at the covert Torchwood Institute, which is much like UNIT in today's Who, and lends a hand to fend aliens off from humanity when the Doctor is otherwise indisposed. That is, when they're not dealing with heaps of personal drama at the institute. The third season Torchwood: Children of Earth is a must-see for any tried and tested Whovian. Torchwood is available to stream on BBC iPlayer. Over a decade since it first aired, Sherlock was pure appointment viewing at the time. If you didn't tune it, how would you avoid being spoiled the following day? But if you somehow missed the moment and are in need of a brainbox-led show like Doctor Who, who's brainier than Sherlock Holmes? Benedict Cumberbatch stars as the aloof, scarf-toting genius and has Martin Freeman as Watson, forever side-eyeing next to him. The cast popping up along the way is exceptional and the writing superb. Just try not to feel too inferior to Holmes when you fail to crack the case. Sherlock is available to stream on BBC iPlayer. Have you ever watched a Jurassic Park film and thought, I wish I could hang out with these dinosaurs more? Enter Primeval. Truly a hidden gem, this sci-fi show from ITV sees a professor and his prehistoric-obsessed team track down and capture dangerous dinosaurs as they manage to slip through a rip in time from the past. There are too many good episodes to pick from. When a vicious sabre-toothed dinosaur breaks into a Go Ape-type park? Loved it. When a huge water dino gets into London's plumbing? Yikes. When a pack of velociraptors break into a mall? Run, don't walk, to your TV screens now. Primeval is available to stream on Now. If you have yet to come across Misfits, you lucky thing – what a treat you have in store. The Channel 4 dark comedy finds a ragtag group of young offenders suddenly struck by mysterious cosmic lightning while doing community service, which leaves them each with a special superpower. The premise gets 10 points for originality. Except this lot aren't about world saving. They're out for themselves. A foul-mouth twist on the superhero genre, those who enjoy Torchwood will also likely feel at home with this. The Umbrella Academy's Robert Sheehan is a stand-out as the immortal Nathan. Misfits is available to stream on Channel 4. Netflix's time travelling murder mystery Bodies stars Stephen Graham, of recent Adolescent success on the streaming platform. Given that he's one of the best actors working at the moment, we can rest assured this is going to be at least a base level of good. Graham's detectives grapples with four killings in four different timelines, in an adaptation of the late Si Spencer's graphic novel from 2015. The show bends time and genres in an ambitious set of episodes that have certain teething pains, but definitely puts a new spin on the detective drama. One for those who love something timey-wimey. Bodies is available to stream on Netflix. When you're watching a Doctor Who episode with a brilliant concept that doesn't quite come together, you might be left thinking, what would this have looked like in Charlie Brooker's hands? Netflix's dark tech hit has some surprising genetic similarities to the BBC stalwart, given they're essentially telling anthology stories. When Black Mirror and Doctor Who both started to take fantastical turns in recent seasons, the mystery-of-the-week similarities became even clearer. Which begs the question, Black Mirror x Doctor Who episode when? From the most recent seventh season of episodes on Streamberry – sorry, Netflix – start with 'Common People' if you want to be glum in an existential way, then end with 'Eulogy' if you want to be glum in a moving way. Black Mirror is available to stream on Netflix. A bit of a curveball to end the list, but this is one for the Ncuti Gatwa converts. More Trending There are some fans who perhaps didn't know much about the Scottish actor before he stepped into the Tardis, but it was on Sex Education where he first made a name for himself. Watching his fabulous character Eric in the sex positive teen drama on Netflix makes it clear why Gatwa was cast as the Doctor. He's at turns funny, moving and an eternal scene-stealer. What's more, the show is an absolute delight and with an up-and-coming who's who cast, it's essentially become the British Euphoria. View More » Sex Education is available to stream on Netflix. BGT fans all issue complaint over Wildcard after 'ridiculous' rule change

The 2025 final of Britain's Got Talent kicked off on ITV1 tonight with presenters Ant and Dec revealing which act had returned to the competition as this year's Wildcard act Britain's Got Talent viewers have been left torn over this year's Wildcard act as the 2025 final kicked off on ITV. After months of auditions and live shows, the latest series of BGT comes to an end tonight in the supersized live final. Just minutes into the final, however, hosts Ant and Dec announced that Welsh singing duo Han and Fran had been chosen by the judges as the Wildcard act after narrowly missing out on a place in the final during last weekend's live show. ‌ The singing pair were first to take to the stage tonight, singing a mega-mix of ABBA songs; however, viewers were left divided over whether they were the right pick for the Wildcard. ‌ "Can't believe the wildcard choice, some brilliant acts could have been picked over them #BGTFinal," one viewer wrote. Another said on X, formerly known as Twitter: "So many better acts should've been chosen as the wild card. #BGT." ‌ Not all viewers were unimpressed, however, with many praising the duo. "VERY happy with this year's wildcard - fun, not 'up themselves' & absolutely British! #BritainsGotTalent #BGT," one fan tweeted. Another said: "I'm kinda happy Han & Fran got the wildcard I quite liked them. But I do agree that there were better acts who deserved it over them. #BGT." A third wrote: "Han and Fran being the wildcard is the campest thing ever I'm obsessed! #bgt." ‌ After Han and Fran's performance, judge Simon Cowell spoke about how they chose the duo as their Wildcard pick as the audience loved them - leading to some confusion among the viewers online. "Who picked the wildcard? Judges or the public? #BritainsGotTalent #BGT," one asked. However, some called for a change to the Wildcard rule, proposing that it should be the viewers who get to choose the returning act and not the judges. "Why can't the audience have a wild card? Ridiculous #bgt." Tonight's final has so far seen dance group Ping Pong Pang and singer Stacey Leadbeatter perform, with eight more acts set to take to the stage. However, the judges were the first to make their debut in the final - with Amanda Holden wowing the crowd and audience at home with her stunning white gown. Earlier today, many fans were convinced that they had worked out who was set to win this year's final after the bookies revealed that Hear Our Voice - a choir made up of victims of the Post Office Horizon scandal - were the favourite.

TV stars deliver all the iconic looks at the British Soap Awards 2025

One of the biggest nights in a soap star's calendar is upon us as the cast of the nation's favourite serial dramas step on to the red carpet. We are of course referring to the British Soap Awards, which stages its return this year following a one-year hiatus. The typically annual ceremony sees EastEnders, Emmerdale, Coronation Street and Hollyoaks go head-to-head to compete for Best Soap, with the stars of each respective serial up for a cluster of awards. With this year having been a huge one for all four soaps, with time jumps, anniversaries, shock returns and stunts galore – not to mention the incredible, boundary-pushing stories that we all know and love – it's safe to say that they've all pulled out the stops. The awards ceremony, which will air on ITV this Thursday, is currently underway, with the actors having hit the red carpet. Patsy Palmer, who is nominated for Best Comedy Performance, was looking fabulous in a blue crop top, with trousers and a jacket to match. The actress had plenty of storylines over the past year, reprising her iconic EastEnders role as Bianca Jackson, who was famously held prisoner in a lock-up by evil Reiss Colwell. Co-star Gillian Taylforth, who plays Kathy Beale on the BBC One drama, was pictured alongside 80s co-star Anita Dobson, who is up for Best Scene following Angie Watts' unexpected comeback as part of EastEnders 40th anniversary. Our hearts are full. EastEnders' Laura Doddington – aka the formidable Nicola Mitchell – was pictured during the arrivals too. The actress has left quite an impression on viewers as scheming Nicola, who is up for Best Newcomer. Elijah Hollway, who plays Harry Mitchell, looked suave in a black t-shirt and trousers, with a jacket a dark shade of blue finishing off the look. Elaine Peacock and George Knight stars Harriet Thorpe and Colin Salmon were also in attendance. Queen Victoria landlady Harriet wore a long flowing blue dress while Colin opted for a stylish black suit. Balvinder Sopal and Navin Chowdhry, who play Suki and Nish Panesar, reunited on the red carpet. Navin is up for Best Villain, with dish having met a shocking end earlier this year. The Hollyoaks cast were also out in their best gear, with Ste Hay star Kieron Richardson, Gemma Bissix, Tamara Wall, Isabelle Smith, Ashley Taylor Dawson and Jessica Fox among those in attendance. Gemma, who recently returned to screens as the deliciously evil Clare Devine, shared the red carpet with on-screen sister and real-life bestie Tamara Wall, who plays Grace Black on the Channel 4 soap. Friendship goals. Gemma wore a black dress while Tamara sported a black suit and a pair of patent high heel shoes to finish out the classy look. The Osborne clan, who are nominated for Best Family, also hit the red carpet, with Ashley (Darren), Isabelle (Frankie) and Jessica (Nancy) stopping for a picture together. Sienna Blake icon Anna Passey, who has been at the centre of some huge storylines this past year, was also pictured, wearing a yellow dress. Sienna is currently being drugged by her serial killer dad Jez and her granny Martha, who has dementia. Her long-lost twin sibling Dodger also returned to screens, and upcoming scenes will see the pair on the hunt for granddaughter Victoria. Kieron Richardson, meanwhile, attended the Soap Awards with husband Carl Hyland. The pair, who renewed their wedding vows in Portugal last week, looked dapper in suits. Lucas Hay star Oscar Curtis ate up the red carpet in a snazzy red, white and black blazer, while co-star and on-screen boyfriend Nathaniel Dass, who plays Dillon Ray, wore a stylish suit in a dark shade of pink, finishing out the look with a summery shirt. Nate's real-life girlfriend Ruby O'Donnell, who plays Peri Lomax on the soap, wore a flowing summery yellow dress. Ruby stunned audiences this year with a hard-hitting and emotional rape storyline as on-screen character Peri was assaulted by Abe Fielding. Oscar and Nate, meanwhile, continue to have a huge following online, playing much loved couple Lucas and Dillon – also known as HayRay, who are up for Best Partnership. And speaking of loved partnerships, Coronation Street favourite Vicky Myers – aka DS Lisa Swain – was pictured on the red carpet wearing a stunning silver dress. She is nominated with Alison King, who plays Carla. The on-screen couple, known as Swarla, have taken fans by storm, amassing a loyal and devoted following online. Luca Toolan, meanwhile, wore a black suit and a bow tie. The soap star is nominated for Scene of the Year for Mason Radcliffe's death. Luca bowed out of his Mason role after just a year, in horrific scenes that saw him fatally stabbed by his brothers. The youngster, was attacked by a zombie knife while protecting Dylan Wilson (Liam McCheyne) who had intervened to help his former bully. After being rushed into hospital, hospital staff worked tirelessly to keep him alive, to no avail. Sarah Platt star Tina O'Brien was also in attendance at the event, wearing a beige dress with silver sparkles on it. More Trending And last but by no means least, the stars of Emmerdale took to the red carpet. Beth Cordingly, who has captivated audiences as Ruby Miligan, was among those in attendance, wearing a black dress. Joe Tate star Ned Porteous, who is up for Best Villain, looked every bit as dapper as his scheming on-sceen alter-ego in a black suit. Amelia Flanagan, meanwhile, wore a black dress as she took to the red carpet. View More » The actress was at the centre of a huge story as April Windsor vanished without a trace only to return months later, revealing she had been living on the streets. A special episode which showcased her struggles is nominated tonight. If you've got a soap or TV story, video or pictures get in touch by emailing us soaps@ – we'd love to hear from you.
