11 killed as vehicle plunges into canal in Uttar Pradesh
The victims were traveling to the Prithvinath temple in Gonda district, approximately 135 kilometres from Lucknow.
The vehicle carried 15 members from three families. According to local officials, the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to fall into the Saryu canal.
Rescue operations were immediately launched, but the strong currents complicated efforts.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced financial aid of 500,000 rupees (around RM24,500) for each deceased victim's family.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also pledged 200,000 rupees per family from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
The tragedy has sparked renewed calls for improved road safety measures near water bodies in the region. Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the accident. - Bernama

BUKIT MERTAJAM: An Indonesian domestic worker was among 12 foreign women detained by the Immigration Department during a raid on an entertainment centre here. Its Enforcement Division director Basri Othman said checks revealed that the woman held a valid permit to work as a maid but had violated the terms by working as a guest relations officer (GRO) at night. He said further inspection showed that some of the women who were employed in factories, had overstayed their permits, and several did not possess any identification documents. 'In the operation at 1.30am yesterday, the women – three Indonesians, seven Thais and two Vietnamese – aged between 20 and 35, were found entertaining customers,' he told reporters, Bernama reported. According to him, several of the women tried to escape through the back door but were swiftly detained. Couple in Ford Mustang dies after crash into power poles near Segamat
SEGAMAT: A married couple died tragically after the car they were travelling in skidded and crashed into power poles at KM13 of Jalan Segamat-Kuantan on Monday (August 4) evening. Segamat police chief Supt Ahmad Zamry Marinsah said the accident is believed to have occurred when a Ford Mustang driven by the 50-year-old local man and his 30-year-old wife was heading towards Segamat. He said the driver lost control of the classic American automobile which skidded and veered left, then hit two electric poles whereby both victims suffered serious injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. 'The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and further investigations are still being carried out. Anyone with related information can contact the (traffic division of) Segamat police headquarters,' he said in a statement. Meanwhile, Segamat fire and rescue station operations commander Senior Fire Officer (PBK) Abd Rahim Taufik said after receiving a distress call at 1.46 pm, a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) with six personnel was dispatched to the scene. 'On arrival at the accident scene, the operations team had to extricate the two victims in the car using special equipment. 'Both victims, Mohd Izuddin Harmaini, 51, and Nur Syamimi Rosli, 36, were pronounced dead,' he said, adding that their bodies were handed over to police for further action and the operation ended at 3.36 pm. - Bernama

Works minister denies viral RM26mil gratuity payment letter
KUALA LUMPUR: Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has denied the authenticity of a letter dated July 28, 2025, which went viral on social media, purportedly from the ministry regarding a gratuity payment to an individual. He said that the letter was fake and was never issued by the ministry or himself. "The ministry never issued any official invitation for such a gratuity payment ceremony. As such, I advise the public not to be deceived by such documents, which clearly contain elements of fraud and impersonation," he said. He said the ministry is working closely with the authorities to investigation the matter. The public is urged to verify any suspicious documents or communications allegedly from the ministry through its official website at or by calling the official hotline. Earlier, a letter had gone viral on social media claiming that a gratuity payment of over RM26 million was supposed to be presented to the next of kin of an individual at a ceremony to be held at the ministry tomorrow. - Bernama
