PWHL plans further expansion, and eyes 2026 Olympics to broaden reach in Europe

Boston Globe23-05-2025
'By every measure, we're ahead of where we thought we would be. And we never thought we were going to be this niche six-team league in the northeast of North America,' Kasten said.
'Our manifest destiny is a lot more than six. It's a lot more than eight. I don't know how many,' he added. 'My point is, we're going to be a league like every other real major league, and that's our goal. ... We're going to be spread — our footprint will be across this continent and hopefully others as well.'

Expansion plans
Without making a firm commitment, Kasten said there was enough interest from major markets that missed out on expansion this year to add even more teams by 2026-27. He said the league will have a better timeline on the next expansion phase based on how smoothly Vancouver and Seattle are incorporated.

'I'll know by midseason what I think we should do and we'll go from there,' he said. 'I don't know if it's the year after or the year after that, but I think it'll be sooner than most people ever imagined.'
Eye on Europe
What's clearer is the league turning its focus toward Europe to coincide with the Olympics, and a women's hockey tournament predominantly featuring PWHL talent.
Kasten said there have been discussions about playing exhibition games in Europe within the next two years, as well as building ties with European leagues for developmental purposes and even of one day establishing teams there.
'Europe is a big part of our future,' Kasten said.
'I think our presence on the international stage next year is going to be really well-timed, a propitious step for us,' he added. 'We think the period before the Olympics, during the Olympics and after the Olympics are very important to the next stage of our development.'
Kasten spoke from Ottawa where he attended Game 2 of the best-of-five Walter Cup Finals series, which is tied at 1 after defending champion Minnesota's 2-1 overtime win.
Attendance jumps
The PWHL is closing its second season, which featured jumps in attendance, revenues, sponsorships and goal scoring — from 4.8 to 5.02 per outing — over the inaugural season.
Average attendance rose from 5,448 per contest last year to 7,260 due in part to nine neutral site games drawing a combined 123,601 fans.
Attendance in Toronto and Montreal jumped with both teams playing in larger venues, though Minnesota and Ottawa had slight drops in average turnout when not including their designated 'home' neutral site games.
Turnout continues to lag in New York where the Sirens finished last in the standings for a second straight year while averaging a league-low 2,764 fans per game — up from 2,496 last year — at the NHL Devils' home, the Prudential Center.

Executive vice president of business operations Amy Scheer said the league's sponsorships increased from 40 to 60, and merchandise sales doubled — helped by the PWHL unveiling logos and nicknames for its six teams this season.
Kasten doesn't discount needs the PWHL has to address, noting the league intends to increase promotions and improve venues in various markets. Another concern is how fanbases will respond to each of the six existing teams standing to lose four players each as part of the expansion process next month.
Hopeful future
For Kasten, that doesn't take away what the league has accomplished in 23 months since being launched by his boss, Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter and wife Kimbra, tennis icon Billie Jean King, and Ilana Kloss. As the PWHL's financial backer, Walter committed hundreds of millions of dollars as part of a long-term vision to bring together the world's top women players in one league.
Kasten said the initial projection for attendance was 1,000 per game for a league that in March surpassed the 1 million mark, including playoffs.
'I see us on a very distinct upward track able to look towards seasons where we can start to turn the corner and be in the black,' Kasten said, looking ahead to 2031.
'We're far away from that now and that's OK. We projected that,' he added. 'But when that happens, we can also think about expanding the schedule. And with an expanded schedule in an environment where you're finally making money, well, now there's more money for more people.

'And so I hope by then we're at that point. That would thrill me.'

Breaking down the Timberwolves' roster as it closes in on completion for 2025-26

The biggest splashes of the Minnesota Timberwolves' summer lapped on their shores. Lavish contract extensions for Naz Reid and Julius Randle set the team up to return next season largely intact. The $225 million in expenditures ensured that any other signings before training camp would be of the tinkering variety, and that is how things have played out. Their recent signings of Johnny Juzang to a training camp deal and Enrique Freeman to a two-way contract essentially leave one open spot on the roster that the team plans to use on a guard to bolster the depth behind Mike Conley and Rob Dillingham. Advertisement The Wolves have looked into several candidates for the spot, including Malcolm Brogdon, Cam Payne and Landry Shamet, league sources told The Athletic. However, all indications are that Bones Hyland is the front-runner to get that final spot, league sources said. Hyland signed a two-way contract with the Wolves in February, played briefly in Iowa and spent the rest of his time with the Timberwolves. He appeared in four games for the Wolves last season and was a first-round draft pick of Timberwolves president of basketball operations Tim Connelly when Connelly was in Denver. August is typically a slow month for business in the league and training camp won't begin until the end of September, so there is no real rush to finalize a deal. With Conley entering the final year of his deal and season No. 19, Dillingham beginning his second year after playing just 516 regular-season minutes as a rookie and Nickeil Alexander-Walker in Atlanta, the Wolves have been looking for depth at point guard. However, it's a tricky spot to fill. They are less than $6 million under the second apron and want to avoid a second straight season of spending at a level that brings severe roster-building penalties, which compound with each year a team exceeds it. If they used their taxpayer midlevel exception of $5.7 million to try to lure an established player above a minimum contract, it would put them right up against the apron and leave them little wiggle room for future maneuvering. The spot also doesn't come with guaranteed minutes given the need to get Dillingham, the eighth pick in the 2024 draft, more run next season. Signing Hyland would give the Wolves 14 players on the roster, two-way contracts excluded. That leaves one open spot, but they could leave it open for maximum flexibility for potential trades in the future. The Wolves are also right up against the second apron, so every dollar saved is an important one. Advertisement With training camp about six weeks away, here is a look at how the roster is shaping up coming off back-to-back runs to the Western Conference finals. Point guards: Mike Conley Jr., Rob Dillingham, Bones Hyland, Tristen Newton (two-way). Skinny: Wrist and ankle injuries prevented Conley from picking up a basketball much of last summer, which led to a very slow start for the veteran. He has been healthy this summer but will be 38 on opening night and likely will need a reduced work load next season. … Dillingham will be one of the most critical players on the roster after playing sparingly as a rookie. … Donte DiVincenzo could get a starting spot here as well after playing well in that role briefly before being injured last season. … Hyland was well received in the locker room last season and lit it up in Iowa. … Newton signed his qualifying offer earlier this month. He only appeared in three games for the Wolves last season but has good size at 6 foot 5 to merit another look. Shooting guards: Anthony Edwards, DiVincenzo, Jaylen Clark, Johnny Juzang. Skinny: When the season ended, one of the messages Edwards gave to his teammates emphasized the importance of working out in Minnesota as much as possible this summer. He has been at the practice facility on numerous occasions, walking the walk. … DiVincenzo was planning to play for Italy at EuroBasket starting at the end of the month, but he pulled out as a precaution to ensure he is healthy entering training camp. There is no concern about the toe injury that caused him to miss time last season. The Timberwolves did not block him from playing, according to team sources. … Clark burst onto the scene as an NBA-ready defender last season and also surprised with his efficiency (43 percent shooting from 3) and maturity on the offensive end. … Juzang is 6 foot 7 with questionable defense. Still, he hit 37.6 percent of his 3s in 64 games for the Utah Jazz last season. He is a long shot to make the roster, but it is worth noting that Luka Garza forced his way onto the team after coming to camp with similarly long odds last year. Advertisement Small forwards: Jaden McDaniels, Terrence Shannon Jr., Joe Ingles Skinny: McDaniels was exceptional in the playoffs last season, giving optimism for another leap heading into Year 6. … Shannon is expected to get significant minutes this season with NAW gone. A standout Summer League performance was a good step toward grabbing a role as a bench scorer. … Ingles was valued last season as a leader in the locker room but likely will not be in the rotation unless injuries demand it. Power forwards: Julius Randle, Naz Reid, Leonard Miller, Enrique Freeman (two-way) Skinny: Randle was one of the best players in the Western Conference playoffs in the first two rounds, but he struggled in the conference finals against Oklahoma City, along with most of the team. The Timberwolves believe a second season playing in Minnesota will only bring more from his game. … Reid resisted guarantees of greater roles to remain in Minnesota, where he has become a folk hero and one of the best bench players in the league. … Miller's future is uncertain. He has yet to force his way onto the floor but also is behind a deep and well-paid big-man rotation. … The Wolves liked what they saw from Freeman while he played for the Indiana Pacers at Summer League, where he averaged 16.6 points and 9.6 rebounds. Centers: Rudy Gobert, Joan Beringer, Rocco Zikarsky (two-way). Skinny: Gobert is not playing in EuroBasket, a promising sign for his 13th season. His defense took a step back last season, and his role was greatly affected by the trade of Karl-Anthony Towns, who was as open to utilizing Gobert on offense as any player on the roster. Familiarity with Randle and DiVincenzo could help, as will avoiding the wear and tear of international play. … The Wolves are sky-high on Beringer's potential, optimism that was fortified in Las Vegas. However, he doesn't turn 19 until November and will need some seasoning. Coach Chris Finch has used a big-man rotation of Gobert, Randle and Reid. That could be the play again, especially early in the season. … Zikarsky is massive and will spend the season developing in Iowa. Easy Environmental Solutions Secures Full Down Payment for First EasyFEN™ Units in Africa

MANKATO, Minn., Aug. 14, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Digital Utilities Ventures, Inc. (OTC: DUTV), operating as Easy Environmental Solutions Inc., has received the full down payment on its $3.4 million contract for its first EasyFEN™ waste-to-microbial fertilizer units in Africa, with Kenya confirmed as the initial deployment site. This milestone positions the Company to tap into Africa's share of the $381 billion global fertilizer market and sets in motion a large-scale initiative to combat food insecurity and soil degradation in a region where hunger deepens year after year. EasyFEN™ Waste-To-Microbial Fertilizer Unit 'This is a historic moment—not only for our company but for African agriculture,' said Mark Gaalswyk, CEO of Easy Environmental Solutions. 'The EasyFEN™ system isn't just sustainable; it's profitable, scalable, and built to create lasting value for investors while transforming agriculture for entire nations. This is the model wherein doing the right thing for the planet also delivers strong financial returns.' Turning Waste Into WealthEach EasyFEN™ unit processes up to 17,500 tons of organic waste annually, converting it into more than 2.7 million gallons of Terreplenish®—a proprietary, 100% organic microbial fertilizer. At full capacity, a single EasyFEN™ unit is expected to generate approximately $19 million in recurring annual revenue through ongoing Terreplenish® production and technology licensing, creating a scalable, high-margin growth model for the Company and its shareholders. Validated by over 100 independent studies and backed by more than a decade of field data, Terreplenish® restores soil health, boosts yields, and reduces irrigation or rainfall needs by up to 20%. Just two gallons per acre delivers 45–60 lbs. of nitrogen and 15–20 lbs. of phosphorus, enabling each unit to treat 1.35 million acres (approximately 546,000 hectares) of farmland every year. Terreplenish® - 100% organic microbial fertilizer Beyond nutrients, Terreplenish® strengthens soil biology, acts as a natural bio fungicide, and builds long-term soil resilience—all while reducing the need for costly synthetic fertilizer imports. By creating fully local, circular economies, EasyFEN™ technology brings each country closer to agricultural self-sufficiency. Once operational, each EasyFEN unit deployed in Africa can produce enough Terreplenish® annually to support food production for more than 5 million people. The technology—developed by Easy Energy Systems, Inc., manufactured by Easy Modular Manufacturing, and marketed globally under Easy Environmental Solutions, Inc. alongside Feed Earth Now—will be showcased in Mankato, Minnesota, before being shipped to Kenya within the next 90–120 days, offering stakeholders, partners, and community members the chance to see the fully operational system up close. 'This is what the world has been waiting for,' said Nate Carpenter, Vice President of Global Operations – Eastern Hemisphere. 'Fully sustainable models. Automated machinery. Profits for developers and affordable pricing for farmers. In an era of famine and water scarcity, the EasyFEN™ isn't just a solution—it's the new gold standard, and we're ready to lead the charge.' A Continent-Wide RoadmapEasy Environmental Solutions is in active discussions with political leaders, businesses, and stakeholders in more than 10 African nations. 'This isn't just about technology—it's about sovereignty, stability, and long-term agricultural independence,' said Bakry Osman, Director of Africa Operations. 'Our goal is Terreplenish® in every African country by 2027. We're not offering short-term fixes. We're replacing broken systems at scale.'
