Penang livestock revenue hits RM1.906 million with poultry leading growth
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow revealed that poultry and duck products, including meat and eggs, were the largest contributors, accounting for 91.75 per cent of the total NHT.
'The livestock industry remains a vital source of protein for the people of this state,' Chow said during his speech at the opening of the Penang Farmers, Livestock Breeders, and Fishermen Day at the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI).
Interim results from the Penang Agricultural Census 2023 showed that the livestock sector contributed 44 per cent of the state's total agricultural sales, valued at RM3.514 billion.
Chow emphasised that the Livestock Enactment aims to modernise self-sustaining industries like poultry and pig farming, shifting them toward large-scale, technology-driven operations.
The event, held from Friday until today, was also attended by State Agrotechnology, Food Security, and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol.
Chow highlighted the adoption of closed-house farming to improve production quality and environmental sustainability while ensuring support for small-scale traditional livestock farming through the Livestock Industry Development Project.
Efforts to control zoonotic diseases remain a priority to safeguard public health and industry sustainability.
Chow added that Penang's agricultural strategy aligns with the National Agro-Food Policy (DAN 2.0) 2021-2025, focusing on food security.
The state is also developing strategic agricultural parks like Ara Kuda and Mayfield, which utilise advanced farming technology.
The federal government's Integrated Agricultural Development Area (IADA) initiative further strengthens the rice industry through 12 key programmes aimed at boosting efficiency and resilience. – Bernama

Penang backs 13MP, vows to accelerate high-value economy transition
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government fully supports the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Dewan Rakyat earlier today. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the core elements of the 13MP aligned with the goal of accelerating the achievement of Vision Penang 2030, which has been in place since 2018. Elaborating, Chow said infrastructure development projects such as the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project and the PLUS Highway (Juru - Sungai Dua elevated highway) project would not only improve infrastructure but also expand existing connectivity. Similarly, he said, the expansion of Penang International Airport (PIA) would enhance user experience. "The Penang government hopes that this will be completed on schedule to strengthen regional connectivity and stimulate planned growth in the surrounding areas of the state," he added. Furthermore, Chow said, Penang welcomed the announcement of the long-awaited upgrade of the Klinik Desa Padang Menora in Seberang Prai Utara, which is eagerly anticipated by the local community. He said this upgrade would improve healthcare services in the area. Meanwhile, Chow said the implementation of a five-season paddy planting programme over the next two years in integrated agricultural development areas would provide an advantage for the state to maintain its position as the highest average rice producer in the country, thereby ensuring continued food security. "Overall, the Penang government hopes that this announcement will be followed by further details, including directions and strategies that need to be reviewed. "Follow-up actions will be presented to the relevant ministries to ensure that the commitments announced are realised in accordance with the people's mandate in the state and the country," he said. Govt ends blanket egg subsidy, introduces targeted support from August 1
PUTRAJAYA, July 31 — The government today announced the restructuring of chicken egg subsidies, to take effect tomorrow (August 1), as part of a phased and targeted subsidy approach aimed at greater sustainability and higher impact. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), in a statement today, said the move is in line with efforts to ensure supply security and price stability for chicken eggs. As part of this initiative, it said, the industry has agreed to introduce Special Grade Eggs which will be offered at more affordable prices. It said the public can continue to purchase chicken eggs at competitive prices through the Agro Madani Sale and Rahmah Sale programmes, which are being widely implemented nationwide at sales locations managed by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) and the Farmers' Organisations Authority (LPP). According to KPKM, the government spent nearly RM2.5 billion to subsidise chicken egg prices between February 2022 and December 2024. 'It is a huge amount and temporary in nature to assist both the public and the industry during the Covid-19 pandemic and the global supply chain crisis,' said KPKM. With the market situation now stabilising, it said, the subsidy scheme has been restructured to become more targeted and comprehensive. It said the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) will also continue to strengthen enforcement through close monitoring under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 to combat any form of profiteering or price manipulation by irresponsible parties. Samaiden bags three bioenergy projects via Seda 2025 e-bidding
KUALA LUMPUR: Samaiden Group Bhd has secured three bioenergy project awards under the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (Seda) Malaysia's 2025 e-bidding mechanism. These projects, located in Johor, Terengganu, and Kelantan, will add over 18 megawatts of biomass and biogas capacity to Samaiden's portfolio, further strengthening its position in Malaysia's renewable energy (RE) sector. The approved projects include two biomass power plants located in Tangkak, Johor and Kemaman, Terengganu respectively, and a biogas power plant in Bachok, Kelantan. Each project was awarded a 21-year Feed-in Tariff (FiT) approval and are expected to begin commissioning from second half of 2028. Samaiden group managing director Datuk Ir Chow Pui Hee said these awards mark a significant step forward in expanding the group's RE portfolio beyond solar into biomass and biogas. "The diversification strengthens our long-term earnings visibility, supports Malaysia's decarbonisation agenda, and positions Samaiden as a comprehensive clean energy solutions provider," she said in a statement today. Chow said the group is proud that its bids were successful in three different states, showcasing the depth of our technical capabilities and execution track record." The biomass and biogas projects will expand Samaiden's involvement in Malaysia's RE sector, supporting the government's target of 70 per cent RE generation capacity by 2050.
