OAK PARK, Mich. (FOX 2) - Citizen Detroit is at it again, giving every candidate on the ballot in Detroit a chance to introduce themselves and make their case to the voters.

"We're making sure here that we give every single candidate an equal opportunity to be heard in their own voice about who they are and what their platform is," she said. "In this era of disinformation and half-truths, letting people speak authentically is really important."
From mayoral candidates to candidates for city council, city clerk, and police commissioner, the two-minute video is an opportunity for both the candidates and the people.
"I think the community's voices need to be heard, and they need to be heard at the ballot," said George Adams, Jr. District 5 City Council candidate. "The more people that come out and engage in this democratic process, the more opportunity there is to have the right leadership that we deserve."
"It's an opportunity for voters as well as those of us who are running," said mayoral candidate Saunteel Jenkins. "This is what the democratic process should be about—every candidate has an opportunity to talk to voters and get their message out, regardless of how much money they have or how much name recognition they have."
The videos will be available at Citizen Detroit and at all news stations and newspapers, but there's another way they're ensuring the younger generation is also informed.

Arabia Simeon, the co-founder of the app POGO—Politics On the Go joined podcaster friend Denzell Turner, host of Black Fridays Podcast. They are bringing informed politics to younger generations.
"Gen Z and Millennials make up more than 62% of eligible voters in the country. Right now, in Michigan, we have the highest youth voter turnout, but in cities like Detroit, the youth voter turnout is super low," said Simeon.
Not only does the app feature candidate videos, but it also works to show users which candidates most closely align with their concerns and views on important issues.
"What we're trying to do with POGO is give people an opportunity to learn about their candidates, cut through the noise, while also having it be a little bit enjoyable and relatable in ways that we haven't necessarily seen," Simeon said.
They are making sure voters of every age have access to important information and urging everyone to get out and vote.
"A lot of us listen to podcasts, a lot of us get our news from social media, so we're just trying to level the playing field," Simeon said.
The candidate videos will be available on all platforms later in June.

David Hogg won't run again to be a vice chair of the Democratic National Committee after weeks of internal drama over the Gen Z activist's unorthodox efforts to remake the party. The DNC decided in a Wednesday vote that it would hold new elections for two vice chair positions held by Hogg and Pennsylvania state lawmaker Malcolm Kenyatta. Last month, an internal panel determined that the two were not properly elected in February due to procedural issues, setting the stage for Hogg's ouster. Hogg shared his intention to step back shortly after voting concluded. 'I came into this role to play a positive role in creating the change our party needs,' he posted on X in a lengthy thread. 'It is clear that there is a fundamental disagreement about the role of a Vice Chair—and it's okay to have disagreements. What isn't okay is allowing this to remain our focus when there is so much more we need to be focused on." 'Ultimately, I have decided to not run in this upcoming election so the party can focus on what really matters,' he continued. 'I have nothing but admiration and respect for my fellow officers. Even though we have disagreements, we all are here to build the strongest party possible.' Hogg said he will now focus on his work with Leaders We Deserve—the political group whose mission to primary Democrats with younger leaders was at the center of the squabbling. Hogg found himself in a public spat with DNC chairman Ken Martin after he announced in April the group he co-founded would spend $20 million backing primary challengers to what he called 'ineffective' Democratic incumbents who are 'asleep at the wheel.' In a statement Wednesday, Martin said he respected Hogg's decision to step down, and had 'no doubt that he will remain an important advocate for Democrats across the map.' Leaked audio shared by Politico last week shed light on just how high tensions had run. In the recording, Martin accused Hogg of destroying his chances at effective leadership by igniting the internal party clash. 'I'm trying to get my sea legs underneath of me and actually develop any amount of credibility so I can go out there and raise the money and do the job I need to to put ourselves in a position to win,' Martin said to Hogg in the May 15 meeting. 'And again, I don't think you intended this, but you essentially destroyed any chance I have to show the leadership that I need to. So it's really frustrating.' Hogg gained political prominence as a gun control activist after a mass shooting at his high school in Parkland, Florida, in 2018. His appointment to the DNC earlier this year was a generational shakeup for the party—he was just 24 when appointed, and the first Gen Z person in the role.

In just the first week of his administration, Trump signed a flurry of executive orders prioritizing domestic oil and gas and (once again) withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris Agreement for climate change mitigation. Since then, additional attacks on existing environmental policies have included the administration's cuts to sustainability research funding and its defunding and dismantling environmental agencies like NOAA and FEMA. Most recently, House Republicans voted to pass a budget reconciliation bill that will gut Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, the largest investment in climate change mitigation and adaptation in U.S. history. This comes at a time when young people really want to get involved and take action against climate change: A 2024 LinkedIn survey found that 61% of Gen Z workers say they want to get a green job within the next five years. But while sustainability fields like environmental justice, nonprofit work, climate policy, and climate research are under very significant threats right now, sustainability experts say that young people pursuing corporate sustainability jobs will likely have more luck. Why are corporate sustainability jobs better protected? Some major companies have dropped their sustainability goals: For example, Walmart says it will likely miss its 2025 and 2030 emissions reduction goals, and companies such as Kraft Heinz and Coca-Cola have dropped some sustainability goals. Banking giants such as Citigroup, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, and Wells Fargo all dropped out of the United Nations-backed Net-Zero Banking Alliance, which aims to reduce the carbon footprints of banks around the world. But according to PwC's 2025 State of Decarbonization report, only 16% of companies are reducing climate commitments, while 37% are strengthening them. Additionally, the number of companies making commitments continues to grow, with nine times the number of companies reporting targets compared with five years ago. In 2023, 93% of Russell 1000 Index companies published a sustainability report, displaying a public commitment to keeping sustainability goals. According to Steven Cohen, program director of Columbia University's master of science in sustainability management program, these commitments aren't just going to disappear. 'Investors are driving the sustainability field first, because they want to know about the environmental risks incurred by corporations,' he says. Additionally, 'even though the U.S. reporting requirements are being reduced, [requirements from the EU or states like California] are not being significantly reduced.' However, even without pressures from the EU and states like California that have stricter climate regulations compared with the rest of the country, Cohen says that public sentiment against climate change is enough to drive companies to stick to their goals. 'People know that the planet is getting hotter. They know that environmental damage is being done, and they want to figure out ways of maintaining the economy without destroying the planet,' he says. 'Lots of people are interested in it, so there's lots of employment.' Cohen says that since around 80% of the students in Columbia's sustainability management master's program go into the private sector, they are not particularly worried about factors like the Trump administration's repeal of the Inflation Reduction Act having an impact on their employment. 'The job market for graduates is holding up pretty nicely, I'd say,' he says. For those interested in entering the sustainability world after graduation, Cohen recommends developing 'any skills that will help you with management and understanding the impacts' of climate change. He particularly recommends learning how to measure the impacts of environmental pollution and remediation. 'Those are objective conditions, and we'll continue to be focusing on that.'
