Trend Micro debuts AI-powered digital twin for proactive security

Trend Micro has introduced a cyber resilience model using Digital Twin technology powered by agentic AI and built on NVIDIA AI, with the aim of shifting enterprise cybersecurity from a reactive stance to a predictive approach.
The Digital Twin technology provides enterprises with the ability to simulate cyber threats, validate existing security defences and adapt security policies without any risk to live production systems. According to Trend Micro, this technology represents a transition from periodic, reactive risk assessment to ongoing, real-time simulation for organisations managing hybrid and complex IT environments.
Mick McCluney, ANZ Field CTO at Trend Micro, said many security teams face challenges defending complicated and dynamic infrastructure. He stated: "Enterprises are struggling to defend complex, dynamic infrastructure environments from highly adaptive, AI-powered adversaries. Rapid shifts in threat actor tactics and IT infrastructure mean reactive, point-in-time risk assessments are no longer fit for purpose. Our Digital Twin technology empowers customers to simulate threats and safely validate security controls without touching production systems - to finally close the gap between digital transformation and defensive readiness."
The Digital Twin capability developed by Trend Micro uses what the company describes as advanced agentic AI along with cybersecurity digital twin technology, built on NVIDIA accelerated computing platforms and NVIDIA AI Enterprise software, including NVIDIA NIM microservices. This technology enables security teams to create a continuously updated, high-fidelity simulation of organisational infrastructure, which can be analysed for risk visualisation and scenario planning.
Bartley Richardson, Senior Engineering Director, Agentic AI at NVIDIA, said trends in cybersecurity require new approaches. He commented: "In today's rapidly evolving cybersecurity landscape, organisations need proactive solutions that can anticipate and counter potential threats before they occur. Powered by NVIDIA NIM microservices, Trend's cybersecurity digital twins bring AI-driven protection to enterprise infrastructure."
This new model allows for several use cases, such as scenario planning, wherein AI agents simulate cyber threats and tactics within the virtual infrastructure before an actual incident takes place. Security teams can use the system to test existing mitigation strategies continually, leading to more refined and resilient plans for sensitive and complex environments.
Additionally, the technology assists decision-makers in making data-driven choices about security investments. They can test the impact of new security tools, policies, or architectural changes within the simulated environment prior to real-world deployment, potentially reducing investment risk and improving resource allocation. Business-critical failure scenarios can also be modelled, allowing organisations to understand how disruptions would ripple across interconnected IT and OT systems, strengthening incident response planning without causing downtime or disruption.
Stuart Samples, Chief Technology Officer at Northeast Georgia Health System, acknowledged the real-time risk visibility offered by Digital Twin technology, stating: "Trend's digital twin approach completely changes our ability to understand risk in real-time. It helps us catch threats we didn't even know to look for, allowing our team to focus less on firefighting and more on confidently driving innovation."
Frank Dickson, Group Vice President, Security & Trust at IDC, also highlighted the value of simulation in proactive security: "As threats migrate to OT, proactive security is critical. Trend Micro's Digital Twin technology introduces a new operational model for enterprise cyber security: simulation. Sometimes even probing a production network can result in downtime, often making it extremely difficult to expose vulnerabilities and confirm compensating measures. A continuous cycle of adversary simulation and defensive validation becomes a value tool to ensure that organisations stay ahead of cyber threats, while being sensitive to the fragility of some operational environments."
Industry trends indicate that as both government and industry accelerate investments in AI infrastructure, there is a growing demand for security solutions that can operate effectively across cloud, on-premises, legacy, and AI-powered systems. Trend Micro's Digital Twin is positioned as a tool to help organisations manage risks across these diverse environments, providing the flexibility to enhance security operations during ongoing digital transformation.
Trend Micro continues to focus on security solutions that incorporate AI and advanced simulation capabilities. The company has recently announced plans to open source its Trend Cybertron AI model and agent framework to support the autonomous development of cybersecurity agents. The company's research also covers security improvements for GenAI workloads and sovereign AI infrastructure.

Trend Micro's Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) is marking its twentieth year of reporting and coordinating disclosures of software vulnerabilities across the digital landscape. The ZDI claims the position as the world's largest vendor-agnostic bug bounty programme, having helped to identify and disclose thousands of software security flaws since its founding in 2005. According to data referenced by the company, the ZDI contributed to the responsible disclosure of 73 per cent of all reported vulnerabilities in 2024, exceeding the total from all other participating vendors combined. The bug bounty programme incentivises security researchers globally to uncover zero-day vulnerabilities in widely used products and to submit them in exchange for financial rewards. By working with vendors ahead of public disclosure, the ZDI aims to close security gaps before malicious actors can exploit them. One of the notable features for Trend customers is early access to virtual patches for zero-day threats. These interim security fixes are distributed, on average, over two months in advance of the release of official vendor updates. This provides an extended window of protection as vendors work to develop and test their formal patches. "Our top priority is empowering our customers to take a proactive approach to cybersecurity. The Zero Day Initiative is one of the best tools we have to stay ahead of cybercriminals, and it's one of a kind. Nobody else in the industry can protect their customers as far in advance as we do." This was stated by Mick McCluney, ANZ Field CTO at Trend Micro, who emphasised the significance of proactive approaches enabled by the ZDI's work. The initiative's history began in 2005 when it was established by TippingPoint, then a division of 3Com. Initially, it focussed on bringing together the security research community, providing a framework for researchers to report zero-day bugs responsibly by offering financial incentives. Two years later, the Pwn2Own competition was launched, challenging teams of researchers to discover vulnerabilities in specific software and operating system categories against the clock. Trend Micro took over the ZDI in 2016 following its acquisition of TippingPoint. Today, the programme comprises more than 450 dedicated researchers across 14 global threat centres, supported by a broader community of over 19,000 vulnerability researchers. The ZDI has played a role in several major security events over the past two decades. For example, its researchers uncovered issues with a patch intended to fix a LNK file vulnerability exploited by the Stuxnet worm, prompting Microsoft to develop a subsequent patch. Similarly, collaborative research with Microsoft led to the award of USD $125,000 to original ZDI researchers for identifying a method to bypass Internet Explorer's defences; this sum was subsequently donated to charity, and the technique went on to earn a patent. Other notable research successes include the identification of two zero-day vulnerabilities in Apple's QuickTime for Windows product, which resulted in Apple discontinuing support for the software and ZDI advising users to uninstall it. The ZDI's investigative output has also contributed to disrupting covert operation campaigns such as Black Energy APT, which has targeted Ukraine on multiple occasions. In 2023, a researcher associated with the ZDI was recognised with a Pwnie award for "most under-hyped research" after discovering a previously unreported exploit technique called activation context cache poisoning. The ZDI's operations not only benefit Trend Micro's client base but also contribute to improved security outcomes more broadly, by ensuring that vulnerabilities in widely used products are fixed before hostile actors can take advantage. The bug bounty scheme is credited with encouraging vendors to implement more robust security practices and to address security flaws ahead of public exploitation. As one of the larger vendor-neutral vulnerability research communities, ZDI continues to rely on its global network of researchers, ethical hacking competitions such as Pwn2Own, and partnerships with vendors, to fulfil its remit of identifying and coordinating the remediation of critical security flaws.

HPE launches ProLiant servers with new NVIDIA GPUs for AI growth

HPE has announced new developments to its NVIDIA AI Computing by HPE Portfolio, focusing on improved integration with NVIDIA AI Enterprise and the introduction of updated NVIDIA AI models and blueprints to HPE Private Cloud AI. Server enhancements HPE will offer HPE ProLiant Compute servers equipped with NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPUs, introducing a 2U form factor designed to meet the rising AI demands within enterprise data centres. According to the announcement, two main server configurations will be available. The HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen11 server supports up to two NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPUs in the new 2U form factor. The HPE ProLiant Compute DL380a Gen12 server supports up to eight NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 GPUs in a 4U form factor and is scheduled to ship in September. These servers are intended to support diverse workloads, from generative and agentic AI to physical AI use cases, which include robotics, industrial automation, visual computing, and simulation. HPE highlights that its Gen12 ProLiant Compute servers employ multi-layered security, using HPE Integrated Lights Out (iLO) 7 Silicon Root of Trust and a secure enclave to deliver tamper-resistant protection and quantum-resistant firmware signing. Lifecycle automation is managed through HPE Compute Ops Management, which, the company states, can reduce IT hours for server management by up to 75% and decrease downtime by an average of 4.8 hours per server annually. The servers are positioned to address escalating enterprise requirements for GPU-accelerated compute power, offering flexibility to innovate and enhance productivity, security, and operational efficiency across enterprise operations. Private cloud AI advancements The company recently shared details about the upcoming generation of HPE Private Cloud AI, expected to be released later in the year. This expansion supports NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 GPUs, enables scalability across GPU generations, and provides features like air-gapped management and enterprise multi-tenancy. HPE Private Cloud AI, co-developed with NVIDIA, will add support for the latest NVIDIA Nemotron models for agentic AI, Cosmos Reason vision language model for physical AI and robotics, and NVIDIA's Blueprint for Video Search and Summarisation (VSS 2.4). These features are designed to assist customers in building video analytics AI agents capable of analysing large volumes of video data for valuable insights. The company emphasises the continuous co-development between HPE and NVIDIA in order to facilitate the fastest deployment of NVIDIA NIM microservices for the latest AI models and blueprints. Customers can access these features via HPE AI Essentials. The overall aim is to provide enterprises with the infrastructure needed to address increasing demand for AI inferencing and accelerate the production of AI solutions, while ensuring data control and high-performance operation. Justin Boitano, Vice President of Enterprise AI at NVIDIA, commented on the server integration, stating: "Enterprises need flexible, efficient infrastructure to keep pace with the demands of modern AI." "With NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPUs in HPE's 2U ProLiant servers, enterprises can accelerate virtually every workload on a single, unified, enterprise-ready platform." Release schedule The HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen11 and HPE ProLiant Compute DL380a Gen12 servers featuring NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPUs are available to order now, with shipping scheduled to begin globally in September 2025. Support for NVIDIA Nemotron models, Cosmos Reason, and NVIDIA VSS 2.4 Blueprint within HPE Private Cloud AI is planned for the second half of 2025. The latest generation of HPE Private Cloud AI with RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPUs will also be available in the latter part of the year.

AI uptake accelerates in APAC as ANZ firms face skills shortage

Organisations in Australia and New Zealand are reporting early business gains from artificial intelligence (AI), but significant challenges remain, especially in bridging skills gaps across sectors, according to new research commissioned by Dell Technologies and NVIDIA. AI adoption trends across APAC The IDC analysis, based on surveys across Asia Pacific (APAC), found a rapid acceleration of AI, generative AI (GenAI), and machine learning (ML) adoption in the region. APAC's AI-centric server market is forecast to reach AUD$366 billion by 2025, with 21% of organisations in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) noting measurable improvements from AI and ML deployments. Furthermore, 5% of ANZ businesses identified AI as central to their competitiveness. Spending on GenAI is also gaining momentum. This year, 84% of APAC organisations are expected to allocate between AUD$1.5 to $3 million for GenAI initiatives. Across APAC, 38% of AI budgets are devoted to GenAI, higher than the global average of 33%. Despite the optimism, businesses face difficulties aligning AI initiatives with strategic goals and integrating AI with existing workflows. Deployment strategies and challenges Deployment strategies are evolving, with public cloud (including multicloud) leading in 2024. However, there is rising demand for private and on-premises AI deployments, driven by security, cost efficiency, data sharing, collaboration, and industry-specific needs. Organisations are increasingly adopting specialised AI models and focusing on data security and infrastructure choices across cloud environments. Key challenges for scaling AI and GenAI include rising IT costs, regulatory and compliance risks, and meeting energy efficiency commitments. Skills shortages are cited by over 72% of APAC enterprises as a significant concern, leading to delays in digital transformation and product development. Security and privacy remain critical considerations, with organisations turning to external service providers for support in AI system security, infrastructure modernisation, and workforce training. Approaches to AI adoption The report notes that APAC organisations are generally following a structured, phased approach to AI adoption, targeting high-impact use cases to deliver measurable benefits while mitigating risks. Priorities include investing in suitable infrastructure, fostering AI-centric teams, aligning AI strategies with business goals, and implementing robust data governance frameworks. Australian and New Zealand businesses are placing increasing reliance on external experts to tackle skills shortages and build scalable infrastructure. Across APAC, 60% of businesses rely on external developers for AI applications, with 30% developing AI in-house and 10% using commercial off-the-shelf solutions. Partnerships with technology providers have become essential for roadmap development, infrastructure support, implementation, and workforce development. AI uptake across key industries Banks and financial services are leading AI adoption in APAC, with 84% using AI and 67% deploying GenAI, often to enhance fraud detection, anti-money laundering, and operational efficiency. Financial services spending on AI and GenAI is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 25-31% from 2023 to 2028. A majority of banks prefer composing AI solutions using enterprise platforms, which requires ongoing expert support in security and data management. In manufacturing, 78% of companies are using AI, with 54% adopting GenAI for supply chain optimisation, predictive maintenance, and real-time production monitoring. Half of manufacturers prefer tailored AI solutions, focusing on areas such as manufacturing execution systems, supply chain integration, and workforce upskilling. The energy sector is leveraging AI (83%) and GenAI (73%) for grid optimisation, predictive maintenance, and energy distribution. Australian engineering firm Worley has begun deploying generative solutions to enhance efficiency and collaboration. Investments are being made in responsible AI practices and infrastructure to promote the transition to cleaner energy and improve grid management across the region. Healthcare organisations report 86% adoption of AI and 59% adoption of GenAI, with a focus on diagnostics and predictive analytics. Notably, CSIRO's Virga computer cluster is being used in partnership with Queensland Children's Hospital to train AI models for diagnosing cystic fibrosis in paediatric patients. Over half of regional healthcare organisations prefer composed AI solutions, often turning to vendors to address complexities around regulations and skills shortages. Retailers in APAC are using AI (82%) and GenAI (63%) for personalisation, inventory planning, dynamic pricing, and fraud prevention. Around 43% prefer composed AI solutions. Retailers report challenges with data readiness and talent availability, prompting a combination of internal capability building and reliance on outside vendors. Expert perspective "The Asia Pacific region holds immense potential to lead the way in AI adoption and innovation. Now is the time for enterprises to move beyond proof of concept (POC) and focus on achieving measurable return on investment (ROI)," said Chris Kelly, Senior Vice President, Infrastructure Solutions Group Specialty Sales, APJC, Dell Technologies. "The journey to consistent ROI is complex and requires comprehensive support across every stage - strategy, use case development, data preparation, governance, optimisation, and scaling AI implementations. With the support from technology partners, enterprises can overcome adoption challenges and accelerate their path to impactful, results-driven AI outcomes." Research methodology The findings reflect multiple IDC data sources and surveys conducted between August 2023 and August 2024, spanning up to 919 respondents from various industries throughout APAC. The research highlights both opportunities and ongoing barriers as companies use AI and GenAI to drive productivity, efficiency, and new business models across the region.
