Leafs fans, circle this January date for Mitch Marner's first game back in Toronto since trade

Maple Leafs
fans will have to wait a few months after the NHL season starts for a chance to see their former hometown hero in different colours at Scotiabank Arena.
The
NHL released its full schedule
Wednesday, which showed that
Mitch Marner
and his Vegas Golden Knights will make their first trip to Toronto on Jan. 23. It comes a week after the Knights host the Leafs in Las Vegas on Jan. 15.
After spending nearly 10 years in Toronto, a team that drafted him fourth overall in 2015, the 28-year-old signed an
eight-year, $96 million contract to join the Golden Knights in a sign-and-trade deal
just before this summer's free agency. The Leafs received forward Nicolas Roy in that trade.
The Leafs' home opener will be against archrivals Montreal Canadiens on Oct. 8.
Other dates of note from next season include Jan. 6, when they will host the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. Florida will be on a three-peat quest this season, something that hasn't been done since the New York Islanders in 1982.
Connor McDavid and his Edmonton Oilers will visit Toronto on Dec. 13.
The league's 32 teams will combine to play 1,312 games between Oct. 7 and April 16 with the playoffs to run from the following weekend through much of June. An 84-game season starts in 2026-27 resulting in 1,344 games — the most in NHL history.
Alex Ovechkin begins his 21st season on Oct. 8 when he and the Washington Capitals host Boston. Ovechkin is at 897 career goals after breaking Wayne Gretzky's record and can add to his total at age 40.
For the first time in more than a decade, the league is pausing in the winter to send players to the Olympics. The Milan break runs from Feb. 6-24, with play resuming Feb. 25.

World Aquatics Championships 2025: Stomach bug appears to wreak havoc with Team USA; Katie Ledecky finishes third in 400 freestyle

The 2025 World Aquatics Championships are underway and Team USA got off to a slow start after several swimmers came down with a stomach bug. SwimSwam reported that a significant chunk of Team USA suffered from acute gastroenteritis at its pre-world championship training camp in Thailand. One coach with an athlete on the team described the amount of swimmers affected as "almost half" the roster. It was later reported by both SwimSwam and Sports Illustrated's Pat Forde that 10 swimmers were deemed too sick to travel with the rest of the team. The issue is also apparently hitting Great Britain's team, which used the same Thanyapura Phuket resort to prepare for worlds. In the first day of action in Singapore, three-time Olympic gold medalist Torri Huske and rising star Claire Weinstein both pulled out of events. USA Swimming announced Huske was pulling out of the 100-meter butterfly, the event she won in Paris, to focus on the 4x100-meter freestyle relay. The U.S. then finished second in the 400 free relay final, just .44 seconds behind gold-medal-winning Australia — an admirable result given star Gretchen Walsh pulled out shortly before the event. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Katie Ledecky was able to compete, renewing her rivalry with Canada's Summer McIntosh in the 400 freestyle. McIntosh comfortably won the final in 3:56.26, with Ledecky finishing third at 3:58.49. Neither Ledecky nor McIntosh swam near their best times from earlier in the year. McIntosh, who won three gold medals at last year's Paris Olympics, is attempting to join Michael Phelps as the only swimmers to win five golds at a World Championships. The bronze was Ledecky's 27th career World Championships medal. Australia won the men's 400 free relay, with the United States finishing third. As Forde noted, the American men also struggled in the heats for the 400-meter freestyle. All of them missed out on the final after failing to finish in the top eight. The swimming portion of the World Aquatics Championships are scheduled to take place until next Sunday.

Sabres avoid arbitration by signing defenseman Connor Timmins to 2-year, $4.4 million contract

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Sabres avoided a salary arbitration hearing with Conor Timmins by signing the newly acquired defenseman to a two-year, $4.4 million contract on Sunday. The 26-year-old Timmins was a restricted free agent and acquired with defenseman Isaac Beliveau in a trade that sent blue-liner Connor Clifton to the Pittsburgh Penguins on June 28. The Sabres are Timmins' fifth team in six NHL seasons since the 2017 second-round draft pick broke into the league with Colorado in 2019-20. He finished last season with a career-high three goals and 15 points in 68 games split between Pittsburgh and Toronto. Overall, he has six goals and 46 points in 159 games. Timmins' signing leaves the Sabres with goalie Devon Levi as their only unsigned restricted free agent. ___ AP NHL:
