A Shaman Saves Her Unlucky First Love In K-Drama ‘Head Over Heels'

Cho Yi-hyun and Choo Young-woo star in 'Head Over Heels.'
K-drama fans have seen a lot of Choo Young-woo this year and they are about to have another opportunity. The actor, who debuted in 2021, played a doctor who assists in thrilling medical rescues in Trauma Code: Heroes on Call, a prosecutor in Mercy For None and two lookalike characters The Tale of Lady Ok. This week the actor joins another rising star, Cho Yi-hyun, in a new fantasy rom-com Head Over Heals.
Although The Tale of Lady Ok was the first of those dramas to air—and earned Choo a Baeksang award for Best New Actor—it wasn't the first of those roles that he filmed. At a recent press conference for Head Over Heels he explained the sequence.
'I filmed them in this order: Trauma Code, Mercy for None, Tale of Lady Ok, and then Head Over Heels,' said Choo. 'Mercy for None and Tale of Lady Ok overlapped in schedule and I didn't really have any breaks between projects. But being able to keep working on new projects is something I'm truly grateful for."
Cho studied with a shaman to become comfortable with the rituals.
Head Over Heels is a fantasy rom-com about a high school student/shaman, Seong-A, played by Cho. Seong-A tries to save the life of her very first love, the unlucky Gyeon-U, played by Choo. Gyeon-U is resigned to his unlucky life but worries about the ways his bad luck might rub off on others. Is bad luck contagious? Not sure, he decides to keep people at a distance.
'More than worrying about his own suffering, Gyeon-U is deeply afraid of hurting the people around him,' said Choo. 'I think he believes strongly that his misfortune might spread to others.'
What Gyeon-U needs is a shaman who can help him figure out where his bad luck is coming from. Seong-A's job is to mediate between the human world and the spirit world, but it's not a job you apply for. She didn't choose to be a shaman.
'They say that becoming a shaman isn't something you can choose just because you want to or reject just because you don't,' said Cho. 'It's said to be a calling by the spirits. If someone refuses it, they may suffer from an unexplained illness or bring misfortune to people around them. Seong-A became a shaman simply because she was chosen, like others before her.'
To accurately play the role, Cho studied rituals with a practicing shaman. She also had her saju done, a traditional Korean form of fortune-telling based on the year, month, day, and time of a person's birth. It was a good experience.
'I've had my saju read before,' said Cho. 'Saju is the study of one's fate depending on one's birth date and time. Since my reading came out positive, I want to believe in it.'
The characters played by Cho Ji-hyun and Choo Young-woo attend high school together.
To save her first love Seong-A will have to communicate with diverse spirits, not all of whom are friendly. The drama's stars insist the story's spirit interactions tend to be 'cute' rather than too scary.
The story also introduces a love triangle with Ji-ho, Seong-A's close friend, played by Cha Kang-yoon. Cha, who made his acting debut in 2024, has also been busy lately, appearing in The Midnight Romance in Hagwon, The Art of Negotiation and Resident Playbook. It doesn't require a shaman to predict that these actors have a bright future or that the chemistry between Choo Young-woo and Cho Ji-hyun will be screen-worthy. They acted together before. Cho, who previously appeared in the Hospital Playlist series and the global zombie hit All of Us Are Dead, worked with Choo in the drama School 2021. According to Choo his co-star has only become prettier since the last time they worked together.
Their characters meet when Gyeon-U's grandmother takes him to get his fortune read. Unlike his co-star, Choo has never had his fortune told.
"If someone could actually predict the future accurately, of course I'd be curious, but I don't want to know,' he said.
The tvN drama is based on the 2020-2023 webcomic "Gyeonwoowa Sunnyeo' by An Soo-Min, which can be read via Naver. The story was adapted by Yang Ji-Hun. The drama was directed by Kim Yong-wan, who previously directed If You Wish Upon Me. Head Over Heels streams on Prime Video every Monday and Tuesday, starting June 23.

The Best New Netflix Movie Has Set A Rotten Tomatoes Score Record

Kpop Demon Hunters Netflix original movies are extremely hit or miss as the service continues its apparent attempt to make movie theaters obsolete, but now? There's a new movie it's just released that has set an overall Rotten Tomatoes record. The movie is KPop Demon Hunters, which appears to have the highest combined critic and audience score for a Netflix original production, a record for the service. Whatever good Netflix original movie you might hit this mark, it will likely fall short. Here are some of Netflix's most high-profile films, and you'll see that they're either way off or they miss by a few points. KPop Demon Hunters It's possible these numbers don't hold for KPop Demon Hunters, but for now, here we are. It seems like a random movie to do this well, I suppose, but there are a whole lot of KPop fans out there, a whole lot of animation fans out there, and I suppose a whole lot of demon hunter fans. Here's the synopsis of the film: The film is directed by Chris Appelhans and Maggie Kang, both industry figures who have largely worked in art departments rather than directing projects. The film stars the likes of Arden Cho, May Hong and Ji-young Yoo. Cho may be the most well-known with lengthy roles in shows like Chicago Med and Teen Wolf. KPop Demon Hunters debuted at #1 in Netflix's top 10 list, but it has been unseated rather quickly by The Intern, the 2015 Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway movie that stands the test of time and has a wide-ranging appeal to the broader Netflix audience. We'll see how the scores hold up long term, but for now, KPop Demon Hunters is on top against Oscar-winners and action blockbusters. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram. ‘Squid Game' Season 3: Everything To Know About The Thrilling Final Season

Squid Game S3 Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun in Squid Game S3 Prepare to re-enter the twisted arena of Squid Game. The third and final season of the Netflix's popular South Korean drama Squid Game arrives on the streamer this week. Will Player 456 finally defeat the Front Man and end the deadly competition once and for all — or will the former winner trying? Season three will follow Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) as he grapples with the horrific loss of his best friend in the game. Meanwhile, the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), whose true identity was revealed to viewers after infiltrating the game, discreetly moved in the Season 2 finale to shut down the rebellion and restore order to the games. 'Gi-hun persists with his goal to put an end to the game, while the Front Man continues onto his next move and the surviving players' choices will lead to graver consequences with each round,' the official synopsis reads. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk is determined to bring the story to its deserved closure in Season 3, which is confirmed to be the final season on Netflix. 'The new season will focus on what Gi-hun can and will do after all his efforts fail,' the director told Tudum. The new episodes will continue after the Season 2 finale, which saw Gi-hun lead a rebellion where many of his allies sadly died. Here's everything you need to know about the third installment, including a refresher on how Season 2 ends, the Season 3 release date, returning cast members, the official trailer and more. When Is Squid Game Season 3 Premiering On Netflix? Squid Game S3 Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun in Squid Game S3 Squid Game Season 3 premieres on Thursday, June 26, at 3 a.m. ET / midnight PT on Netflix. All six episodes will be available to stream at once. Warning: Spoilers ahead for the ending of Squid Game Season 2. How Did Squid Game Season 2 End? Squid Game 3 Lee Byung-hun as Front man In Season 2, Player 001 in Squid Game was revealed to be Hwang In-ho (Lee Byung-hun), also known as The Front Man. The Front Man disguised himself as a player and befriended Gi-hun by sharing a tragic backstory about how his pregnant wife was ill and how he needed to win the money to save her and their unborn child. Throughout Round 2, Gi-hun and Player 001 form an alliance with other competitors, including Gi-hun's best friend from Season 1, Park Jung-bae, and an ex-marine named Dae-ho. In the explosive finale, Gi-hun and his allies clash with the guards, resulting in a full-on armed rebellion. Among the 100 remaining players, half vote to stay in the competition, while the other half vote to leave. With a second vote on the horizon, the players resort to trying to kill those who did not vote their way. Admist the chaos, Gi-hun and his allies come up with a plan to break into the masked spectators' headquarters. Pretending to be dead, Gi-hun and his friends launch a surprise attack — unaware that the captain had been among them the entire time. Young-il manages to separate from the group and betrays the rebels, killing two of them and faking his own death. He then orders his team to crush the rebellion before shedding his Player 001 tracksuit for his signature black cloak and mask. However, one of the most devastating moments of the finale is the death of Gi-hun's best friend, Jung-bae. Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told Netflix's Tudum that this was the ideal way to conclude Season 2. 'Audiences are definitely going to be shocked and very sad to see Jung-bae go,' Hwang said. "He's also the only person within the games that Gi-hun can trust and completely rely on.' What Will Squid Game Season 3 Be About? Squid Game Season 3 Heading into the Season 3 premiere, Gi-hun is likely still unaware that Front Man and Young-il are the same person. 'I don't think Gi-hun knows the truth yet,' Lee Jung-jae told Tudum, noting that his character is too busy with 'blaming himself for everything that happened.' According to Netflix Tudum, the third chapter will see Gi-hun at 'his lowest point yet," but Squid Game must go on no matter what. He'll also need to make some pretty big decisions in the next portion of the game, while the surviving players 'are thrust into deadlier games that test everyone's resolve. With each round, their choices lead to increasingly grave consequences.' In-ho is no longer Player 001 but has resumed his role as Front Man. His brother Jun-ho is still searching for the island and is unaware there's a traitor in his group. 'Will Gi-hun make the right decisions, or will Front Man finally break his spirit?' the description concludes. Who's In The Squid Game Season 3 Cast? Squid Game S3 (L to R) Yang Dong-geun as Yong-sik, Kang Ae-sim as Geum-ja in Squid Game S3 Because there's so much death in Squid Game, only a handful of main characters are set to reprise their roles in Season 3 — so basically, only the surviving players and some other key characters. Here's the list of the returning cast, per Netflix Is There A Trailer For Squid Game Season 3? Apple keeps pulling its own ads

Apple has taken down a new ad just one day after posting it, making it the fourth one removed in just over a year, as spotted earlier by MacRumors. The nearly eight-minute-long ad, titled 'The Parent Presentation,' featured comedian Martin Herlihy giving students advice on how to convince their parents to buy them a Mac. Apple posted the ad on Friday, but it disappeared from YouTube and the company's webpage for college students on Saturday. The iPhone maker also released an accompanying 81-slide presentation template that's supposed to give parents '45 undeniable reasons why a Mac is essential to college,' which still remains available for download on its site. Last May, Apple apologized for its 'Crush!' commercial, which showed a hydraulic press flattening a piano, record player, paint, and other creative tools, only to lift and show its new iPad Pro at the end. It was meant to demonstrate how many creative tasks can be completed with the device, but it sparked widespread backlash instead. Apple pulled the commercial from TV before removing it from YouTube. Months later, Apple pulled a 10-minute ad, called 'Out of Office OOO,' which showed a group of coworkers using Apple products on a business trip in Thailand, after receiving criticism from Thai citizens and lawmakers for portraying the country in a stereotypical and outdated way. Then, in March of this year, Apple took down an iPhone 16 ad with Last of Us star Bella Ramsey. Apple used the ad to show off an AI-upgraded Siri with features that aren't available yet, like recalling the name of someone they met months ago. Unlike the other ads pulled by Apple over the past year, there's no clear reason why 'The Parent Presentation' was taken down — other than some users on social media calling it 'cringe,' or raising questions about who the commercial's target audience was. The Verge reached out to Apple with a request for comment but didn't immediately hear back.
