Guilty, whisky boss who terrorised his wife in terrifying two year campaign of abuse
The shamed ex-director of a Scots whisky firm has been convicted of terrorising his wife for more than two years.
Christopher Leggat verbally and violently abused Cara Leggat, 42, between September 2022 and November 2024.
He was branded 'self-serving' by a judge who told the 44-year-old he simply did not believe his version of events.
Leggat was the former managing director of her family's company Douglas Laing & Co based in the Glasgow 's Hillington.
But he made current managing director Cara's life hell as their 12-year marriage broke down.
He repeatedly slapped his estranged partner and later pushed her into a kitchen cabinet which caused her an injury.
He also told his wife he wished she was dead because he was unhappy about a water bottle he received as a birthday present.
The bully also attempted to stop her from seeing her father - company chairman Fred Laing, and mother Catherine Laing, both 74.
She finally reported matters to the police having initially been scared that a conviction would affect Leggat's job prospects.
But he was found guilty of engaging in a course of behaviour which was abusive to his partner or ex-partner.
Sheriff Allan McKay said: 'I was presented with a stark difference in recall between you and your wife.
'Simply put, I had a decision to make about who I believed and that was straight forward for me.
'I will simply say that I found Miss Laing to be a compelling witness and believed what she told me.
'I don't accept your version of events - much of what you said was self serving and I am not prepared to give it any weight.'
The Glasgow Sheriff Court trial heard that Leggat and Cara were married in 2013 and worked together at the firm.
She recalled that in October 2022 she had made a re-heated sausage casserole dinner for the pair.
Leggat told her to serve a 'better looking meal' which he said was suitable for a child and called her names.
The next incident took place in January 2023 as a result of Leggat's birthday plans.
She said: 'He was most aggrieved and disappointed at a lack of effort to mark his birthday in terms of a meal out.
'He also didn't rate his presents which included a sports water bottle that I bought him.'
The water bottle - said to have been made famous on TikTok - was deemed 'childish and ridiculous' by Leggat.
Leggat is then told Cara: 'I hope you die in your sleep.'
The witness added that Leggat apologised and claimed it was 'a bit of banter'.
The pair were given hospitality tickets to Hampden Park in February 2023 for an Old Firm League Cup Final clash.
Cara stated that when they walked home after the match and she was pushed into a bush by Leggat.
Leggat 'discouraged' Cara from seeing her parents and was under a curfew which made her 'twitch' when it was close.
He was lastly violent towards her in November 2024 at the family home in the city's Pollokshields.
Leggat slapped her on the forehead and pushed her into a kitchen cabinet which resulted in a thigh injury.
Cara told the court that she called her mother and father after the incident and Fred attended their home.
The court heard that he confronted Leggat and 'grabbed him by the scruff of the neck' and told his daughter to contact the police.
Leggat was arrested later that night.
Sentence was deferred pending background reports until August and he was granted bail meantime.

Love Island star Cashel Barnett has been hit with a new sexual assault charge after he was thrown in jail last month for allegedly beating his ex. Barnett, 34, who appeared on season one of the dating show in 2019, was originally booked into Salt Lake City jail in Utah after he 'choked' the mother of his one-year-old child in front of the youngster on April 10. He was charged with felony aggravated assault, domestic violence in the presence of a child and two counts of misdemeanor assault. Utah prosecutors have now levelled three new charges against Barnett involving the same alleged victim - first-degree aggravated sexual assault, third-degree aggravated assault, and third-degree domestic violence in the presence of a child between November and December 2024. Barnett has denied all the charges. Per court documents obtained by Barnett allegedly grabbed his ex-girlfriend from behind, pushed her head into the couch rendering her unconscious, before 'violently' raping her in front of their child in December 2024. It was claimed this came after he 'withheld any physical contact for a month' after the alleged victim 'asked him to get a job to help support their child.' Per the alleged victim's statement, the alleged assault began when Barnett 'put his hands down the victim's pants' and when she kissed him back, he allegedly shoved her off the couch and told her 'she didn't 'get that' because she was 'in trouble".' The victim claims she told Barnett he was 'being manipulative' and when she tried to walk to her bedroom, Barnett allegedly 'grabbed both of her hands from behind her, demonstrated the handcuff position, then picked her up and did a 'swoop onto the couch.'' Per the statement Barnett then pulled his pants down and screamed at her 'Is this what you f*****g want?' and 'Are you f*****g happy now?' The alleged victim said due to being forced into the couch she couldn't breathe and lost consciousness for approximately one minute. She claimed she was woken when Barnett 'sat her up, slapped her across the face really hard and just kept going.' The alleged victim claims Barnett 'violently' raped her and strangled her again, leaving her 'lightheaded.' The statement claims the assault only stopped when she 'grabbed their one-year-old child, who was crying.' Barnett is being held without bail and will be arraigned this week. has contacted Barnett's representatives for comment and has yet to hear back. His attorney told TMZ in a statement:'Mr. Barnett maintains his innocence and denies any wrongdoing. 'My client and his family are enduring an incredibly difficult time, and we hope that his privacy will be respected as we work diligently to defend his name and reputation.' Last month Barnett was accused of arguing with the mother of his child, before she tried to hug him to 'calm him down' during the alleged April 10 incident, per KUTV. She claims he then 'slapped her arms away' and when she walked away, he allegedly picked her up by the neck and threw her onto the bed She claims he continued to apply pressure on her neck so she was unable to 'breathe or see clearly.' She claims Barnett then slapped her in the face and told her 'you're fine'. Following the alleged incident, the victim said she experienced coughing, trouble swallowing, neck pain, nausea, vomiting, memory loss, and a headache. Prosecutors wrote in court documents: 'The report of strangulation is particularly concerning. Injuries related to strangulation can be serious, yet not necessarily apparent. 'Victims who have been non-fatally strangled are 7.5 times more likely to become a subsequent victim of homicide at the hands of the same abusive partner.' 'The State believes that the victim will likely suffer further domestic abuse at the hands of the defendant should he remain out of custody. Therefore, the State requests that the defendant be booked and held without bail' prosecutors argued. Now controversial transgender ex-Rape Crisis boss launches bid to become an MSP
The mother of an abused teenager who was told to accept rape crisis boss Mridul Wadhwa as a woman said it was 'no surprise' to her that the shamed CEO was bidding to be an MSP. Ms Wadhwa, who was born a man, resigned as chief executive of the controversial Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre (ERCC) last year but now wants to stand as a Scottish Greens candidate for Holyrood. The ERCC was found to have 'damaged' victims of sexual violence in a damning report by hindering their access to biologically female counsellors. One mum, whose daughter was raped and had sought help from the centre when the trans woman was in charge, said: 'They tried to gaslight us into accepting that men like Mridul were female and should be able to counsel survivors while attempting to conceal their sex. 'My daughter, who was 14 at the time of the attack, was one of the females that self excluded from Rape Crisis. Maggie Chapman [Green MSP] was a board member when this man became CEO. 'It comes as no surprise that the Scottish Green party would try and inflict this man and their shared ideology on the wider Scottish public.' Ms Wadhwa is on the Edinburgh and Lothians East regional list for next May's Holyrood elections. Party members will begin to vote on candidates next week. The Greens have refused to say whether Ms Wadhwa has passed their vetting process. The investigation into the ERCC last year found that Ms Wadhwa 'failed to set professional standards of behaviour' and 'did not understand the limits on her role's authority'. In 2021, Ms Wadhwa caused outrage by claiming some rape victims were 'bigoted people' who needed to be re-educated if they didn't agree trans women are female. Scottish Tory equalities spokesman Tess White said: 'It speaks volumes about the extremist Greens that they believe this individual is even remotely suitable to be an MSP. 'Following the shocking findings of the independent review, Mridul Wadhwa had to resign in disgrace as CEO. After gaslighting survivors of sexual abuse by telling them to 'reframe their trauma' and vilifying gender-critical staff, it was clear Wadhwa shamefully prioritised the Greens' militant gender ideology over the needs of vulnerable women. 'The Greens must explain why they find it acceptable to possibly select as a candidate someone whose words and actions have caused such huge distress.' The review into ERCC was ordered by umbrella body Rape Crisis Scotland (RCS) in May 2024, after a scathing employment tribunal judgment ruled that staff member Roz Adams was subjected to a 'heresy hunt' for suggesting a rape victim should know the biological sex of her counsellor. RCS said the review had found a 'significant breach of its standards' at ERCC under Ms Wadhwa's leadership. The rape crisis centre boss, a high-profile trans ally of ex-First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, said any staff member who did not think all trans women were women should be fired. According to the employment tribunal, Ms Madhwa was on a mission to 'cleanse the organisation of those who did not follow her beliefs'. A Scottish Greens spokesman said: 'We have robust guidance and internal processes to oversee internal elections.'

Abusers at private school were 'protected by tradition' for 60 years, says judge
Child abusers at a prestigious Scottish boarding school were 'protected by tradition' for 60 years, an inquiry has found. Abuse became 'normalised for generations of boys' at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh as concerns over their welfare were 'ignored'. Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry (SCAI) chairman Lady Smith, a retired High Court judge, published her findings on the provision of residential care at the school. One of the 'prolific abusers', veteran teacher and former pupil James Rainy Brown, took his own life aged 75 in 2013 after learning of a police investigation - prompting a major policy review in 2014, the report said. Another abuser, Mervyn Preston, had taught Rainy Brown as a pupil – while a total of eight teachers were deemed to have been abusers. The school - where fees are up to £50,706 a year - yesterday issued an 'unreserved' apology and said child protection measures were now in place. The report said indecency occurred from the 1950s to the second decade of the 21st century. But Lady Smith said that 'by the early 2000s, Merchiston thought itself a leader in the child protection field'. Lady Smith said 'references were badly handled and child protection concerns ignored', while voyeurism and indecent assaults were common. She added: 'Abusers, and potential abusers, were sometimes protected by tradition, long service, or governor loyalty.' The findings, part of the £95million inquiry's overall boarding schools case study, found that 'in common with Loretto School, Morrison's Academy, Gordonstoun, and Queen Victoria School, children who boarded at Merchiston were exposed to risks of suffering sexual, physical and emotional abuse'. Lady Smith concluded the two main perpetrators at Merchiston – Rainy Brown and Preston - were 'virtually untouchable'. She said: 'From the 1950s to the second decade of the 21st century, there was a more or less continuous line of consistent indecency perpetrated by two prolific abusers, Mervyn Preston and James Rainy Brown. 'The former taught the latter, who then returned to Merchiston as a teacher, after which they worked together. 'They engaged in abusive behaviour which became normalised for generations of boys. 'In the cases of both those men, their longstanding service and positions of power in boarding houses rendered them virtually untouchable. 'In total, eight teachers abused children sexually. 'Seven were male and one was female. 'Conduct included voyeurism, encouraging nudity, indecent exposure, indecent assaults, and in the case of the female, it included encouraging senior pupils to engage in sexual intercourse with her.' She said the school's strong culture of rugby and sport left those who did not fit in vulnerable to abuse and bullying. Lady Smith said: 'For decades, differences - particularly those that made children vulnerable - went unnoticed by the school and staff. 'The Merchiston culture, where toughness in adversity was encouraged, facilitated and exacerbated abuse.' She said that by the millennium, the school was 'content to rely on positive but, in fact, inadequate and insufficiently critical' inspections, while 'obvious abusive trends' were missed - until 2014 when an overhaul was forced due to a wider police inquiry. But Lady Smith said: 'All of that fell apart following the suicide of James Rainy Brown, after he had been told he was subject to police investigation. 'A new inspection regime from 2014, including a wider police inquiry, revealed many longstanding weaknesses in child protection and pastoral care. 'Policies and their implementation had been unsatisfactory. HR processes had been consistently poor and leadership weak although well intended. 'Concerning behaviour had been recorded, but obvious abusive trends were repeatedly missed.' After a poor inspection report in 2015, Merchiston was made subject to special measures by the Scottish Government. It was obliged to respond, and Lady Smith said it was 'well led by its board of governors' and policies 'were corrected and became meaningful'. Yesterday headmaster Jonathan Anderson and Gareth Baird, chairman of the board of governors, said: 'Today's report by Lady Smith is detailed, fair and, at times, a difficult read. 'It uncovers a history of unacceptable abuse suffered by many former pupils and highlights the enduring impact on their lives decades later. 'To all those who suffered abuse while in the care of Merchiston Castle School, we offer our most sincere and unreserved apology. 'No child should ever suffer harm, especially not in a place that exists to nurture and educate. 'Those who were abused by their teachers or their fellow pupils deserved better, and we are truly sorry that they were so badly let down.'
