We tried to do something different, also for next season, for the future, but congratulations to them. I think they deserved it," Maresca told DAZN.
Jackson, who received the red card on his 24th birthday just four minutes after entering as a substitute, issued an apology for his actions.

"I want to say sorry. To the club, the staff, my team-mates, and all the fans watching, I let you down. Another red card... and honestly, I'm so angry at myself.
I work hard every day to help the team not to put us in this kind of situation. I still don't fully understand how it happened. But one thing is clear: it wasn't intentional. Just a football moment that went the wrong way. No excuses. I take full responsibility. I'll reflect, I'll grow, and I'll come back stronger for the badge and for everyone who believes in me.
Sorry. Sorry," Jackson stated.
The match turned in Flamengo's favour during the second half when they scored two quick goals to take the lead.
Wallace Yan's goal in the 83rd minute confirmed the victory for the Brazilian side.
The social media exchange prompted various responses from fans, with one commenting "World class cooking honestly," while another remarked "London Blue!!!!! LMAO." A third fan noted "Oi they're calling them by their PES identity," and another added "Redefined the overrated league in the world."

Late penalty salvages a point for Ipswich in Birmingham opener
Ipswich needed a stoppage-time penalty to rescue a point as they began their quest for an immediate return to the Premier League with a 1-1 draw away to Birmingham on Friday. HT Image Birmingham, back in English football's second-tier after being crowned champions of League One last season, took the lead in the opening match of the 2025/26 Championship campaign in the 53rd minute. Jay Stansfield broke the deadlock when he followed up after Japan's Kyogo Furuhashi, previously a fans favourite at Scottish champions Celtic, hit the post. But George Hirst's controversial penalty deep into stoppage time denied Birmingham, whose minority owner is seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, victory. "I was really pleased with how we played," Birmingham manager Chris Davies told Sky Sports. "We're very disappointed with the penalty and to concede so late is always a sore one. It's really, really harsh." Birmingham dominated territory and possession as they made it 26 league games unbeaten at home. But at just 1-0 ahead there was always the risk of an equaliser and Ipswich, relegated from the Premier League, managed one with their lone shot on target of the match. With five minutes of the eight added on having being played, an Ipswich corner to the far post was headed onto the arm of the unfortunate Lyndon Dykes, who did not appear to be handling the ball deliberately But Dykes' arm was raised and referee Andrew Kitchen awarded a penalty, with Ipswich's Hirst scoring from the spot. The goal sparked a brief fracas between the teams, with objects being thrown onto the St Andrew's pitch by frustrated Birmingham fans. "(Scoring the penalty) is what I'm paid to do," said Hirst. "It is my bread and butter. "The centre-half said it was a rubbish penalty in different terms but it went in the back of the net. That is what matters at the end of the day." jdg/nr

Skidding Revolution turn to Matt Turner as D.C. United pay a visit
After a nine-game run without an MLS loss earlier this year, the perplexing New England Revolution have followed with nine straight matches without a win. HT Image When New England (6-11-7, 25 points) plays host to another ice-cold team, D.C. United (4-14-7, 19 points), the Revolution hope to get a much-needed lift from one of their stars of the past on Saturday in Foxborough, Mass. Matt Turner, who was the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year for the Revolution in 2021, has returned after a four-year stint in Europe. Turner, 31, is on a one- year loan from French club Olympique Lyonnais. Turner moved to Premier League powerhouse Arsenal in 2022, but there and at two other stops in the league, he struggled to hold a starting job. "My European adventure didn't go perfectly to plan, but I did learn a lot along the way," Turner said. "Had some misfortunes, had some opportunities that I didn't make the most of." It's uncertain what role Turner will play on Saturday. "He brings confidence, the intangibles, that's huge," embattled Revs coach Caleb Porter said. "The winning feeling, the confidence, experience, and that leadership, those are the things that I think you'll see." In addition to its nine-game winless streak, New England has gone 0-6-2 in its last eight matches at home across all competitions. The Revolution will look to Carles Gil (eight goals, seven assists) to reverse the tide. Also anxious for a turnaround is D.C. United. Since upsetting FC Cincinnati 2-1 on May 31, D.C. has a nine-match winless streak (0-8-1) in all competitions. In their lone meeting this year on May 28 in Washington, the Revolution and D.C. United played to a 1-1 draw. New England will get its first look at D.C.'s top scorer Christian Benteke (eight goals), who missed the first meeting and finally appears to have recovered from an assortment of leg injuries. Benteke has goals in each of D.C.'s last two matches. "He looks sharp, and he looks fit," D.C. coach Kevin Flanagan said. "I think everybody knows what he means to us as a club and having him on the pitch this weekend, leading the line, gives everybody in the squad that extra bit of confidence." --Field Level Media

Estevao Willian and Joao Pedro guide Chelsea to win against Bayer Leverkusen in pre-season clash
Chelsea kicked off their pre-season campaign with an impressive 2-0 victory against Bayer Leverkusen at Stamford Bridge on Friday (August 8), showcasing their exciting new signings and youthful talent. The match, marked by a dominant display from the Blues, saw Brazilian teenager Estevao Willian and summer recruit Joao Pedro steal the spotlight with their goal-scoring heroics. Estevao Willian, the 18-year-old Brazilian player, made an immediate impact on his Stamford Bridge debut. Just 17 minutes into the match, Estevao capitalized on a rebound from Cole Palmer's lobbed effort that struck the crossbar, slotting home a close-range finish to open the scoring. His goal was only part of the story. Estevao's fearless dribbling and runs down the flank left Leverkusen's defenders struggling. While Estevao set the tone, it was another new signing, Joao Pedro, who sealed the victory with a stunning goal in the final minute. The former Brighton attacker, introduced as a substitute, showcased his talent by taking the ball on the edge of the box and firing a low, zipping shot into the bottom corner. The Stamford Bridge faithful erupted, already embracing Pedro as a fan favorite. His late strike not only secured the 2-0 win but also highlighted the attacking depth Chelsea possess heading into the new season. Chelsea displayed their dominance in the game from start to finish, particularly in the first half, where they had the command of possession and territory. Despite Leverkusen's inability to break out of their half, Chelsea's fluency waned slightly in the second period due to multiple substitutions. However, glimpses of their attacking skills were evident, with moments of brilliance from their young stars. Andrey Santos, who joined the team in 2023, got the chance to display his skills in the game as he started alongside Liam Delap, the new striker. But Delap had a tough game and was taken off after about an hour, with Pedro stealing the show after coming on. Another sub, Jorrel Hato, made a big impact by stopping a dangerous move from Leverkusen's Patrik Schick. Young players Josh Acheampong and Tyrique George were also impressive during the clash. Acheampong, who's 19, got away with a mistake, while George sometimes rushed his plays but looked promising. Chelsea's pre-season will continue with a friendly against AC Milan this weekend. The Premier League campaign kicks off against Crystal Palace next Sunday, where Enzo Maresca's side will look to build on this promising performance. With Estevao and Joao Pedro already making their mark, Chelsea fans will be eagerly waiting for the other stars to shine as well.
