Kota Kinabalu: Kota Belud, known as the Land of the Cowboys of the East, is making its debut as a stopover in this year's Sail Malaysia Passage to the East, offering a fresh perspective for sailors exploring rural charm and cultural depth. Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister cum Sabah Tourism Board Chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said Kota Belud's inclusion is a fitting addition to the rally as the district is known for its strong Bajau heritage, horse riding tradition and growing reputation in community-based tourism. The annual sailing rally, which began in April, will arrive in Sabah this July with over 31 yachts and 70 participants from 15 countries scheduled to explore coastal and inland attractions from July 18 to September 1. New participating countries include Lebanon, Turkey, Kuwait, Tunisia, and India, reflecting the growing global interest in Malaysia's sailing route and Sabah's diverse tourism offerings. Joniston, who serves as patron of Sail Malaysia Borneo, said the rally helps promote Sabah to international travellers and strengthens its position as a culture, adventure and nature destination. He added that the inclusion of new countries and destinations like Kota Belud is a promising sign as Sabah builds momentum toward Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
Advertisement Sabah's growing popularity as a yachting destination is also supported by ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure, with several new berthing areas, including in Tuaran, being identified to cater to increasing interest from international sailors Joniston encouraged organisers to enhance collaboration with the Sabah Tourism Board to further promote the Sabah leg as a key highlight of the entire rally. Joniston recently chaired a Sail Malaysia coordination meeting attended by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) and key tourism stakeholders to ensure smooth operations and safety throughout the Sabah segment. Sail Malaysia Managing Director Sazli Kamal Basha said the rally follows the familiar eastern route starting in Langkawi, with Sabah stops including Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran, Kudat, Lahad Datu, Kunak, Kinabatangan, Sandakan, Tawau and Semporna. He noted that participants will also have the rare opportunity to sail inland along the Kinabatangan River, one of Sabah's most iconic wildlife corridors, known for its rich biodiversity and natural beauty. Merdeka travel pass for unlimited use of SMART tunnel
KUALA LUMPUR: Toll highway concessionaire Amanat Lebuhraya Rakyat Berhad (ALR) has introduced the Smart Unlimited Travel Pass or Merdeka Unlimited Travel Pass (MUTP), offering one month of unlimited use of the Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART Tunnel) in conjunction with National Day and Malaysia Day. Available from Aug 16 to Sept 16, the pass can be purchased for a one-off payment of RM68. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the MUTP reflected the inclusive and people-centred approach envisioned under the Malaysia Madani principles which prioritise inclusivity and the well-being of the rakyat. 'ALR's initiative allows frequent SMART Tunnel commuters to save up to RM64 a month compared with the average monthly toll payment of RM132. 'The launch of this travel pass is very meaningful in the spirit of celebrating our 68th National Day and Malaysia Day. 'This one-month offer sends a clear message that public facilities can and should be provided in an inclusive and people-centred manner, consistent with the Malaysia Madani principles. 'In addition, the Works Ministry, through the Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA), fully supports the government's aspiration to provide the best facilities for the rakyat, especially highway users. The MUTP is an excellent example of such an initiative,' he said after officiating at the MUTP launch at the SMART Management and Tunnel Operations Complex here yesterday. Also present were MHA director-general Datuk Sazali Harun and ALR Group CEO Muhammad Nizam Alias. Nanta said SMART Tunnel commuters typically make about 44 trips a month, with a one-way toll of RM3. 'Through the MUTP, users will enjoy savings of up to RM64, as the average monthly toll can reach RM132 at the standard rate. 'It also provides quick access to the city centre via the SMART Highway, which handles an average of 19,000 vehicles daily, while maintaining the world's only dual-function tunnel that combines road traffic and floodwater management. 'This initiative shows how industry players, especially in infrastructure, can take proactive steps to help the rakyat manage the cost of living, particularly in urban areas,' he said. He added that the MUTP not only strengthens public trust in the highway sector but also aligns with Malaysia Madani's emphasis on balancing economic growth with social justice, while promoting respect and compassion in service delivery. 'The SMART Tunnel remains one of the nation's best engineering achievements, proven to have a significant impact on flood management and urban mobility. 'It is not merely an infrastructure project but also a symbol of Malaysian innovation recognised internationally, with accolades such as the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award, the British Construction Industry Award and the Asean Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award, and listed by CNN among the 'Most Impressive Tunnels in the World'. 'By managing infrastructure, social values, and governance holistically, it has delivered multiple benefits to the rakyat and the nation, strengthening security and sustainability in line with the Malaysia Madani vision,' he said. On a related note, Nanta said there would be no free toll for National Day as the exemption is limited to one festive day.

Sarawak eyes 5 mln tourists this year as WAK Festival kicks off

Speaking at the launch of the What About Kuching (WAK) Festival 2025 calendar at the Kuching Old Court House today, Abdul Karim said the state remains on track to meet its goal, though high airfare prices continue to pose a challenge. 'We've seen economy class fares hit RM800, and even more than RM1,000 at times. Prices are always driven by demand and supply. 'I'm looking forward to our new state airline, which could help stabilise rates. 'Apart from that, I do hope also that the airlines that are servicing now, whether it's MAS (Malaysia Airlines), whether it's AirAsia, whether it's Batik Air, they have to be considered and make sure that everything is in order,' he said. Abdul Karim stressed that flagship events like WAK play a crucial role in attracting visitors while showcasing Sarawak's rich arts, culture, and creative industries. This year's WAK, themed 'Roots', interpreted as 'We Are Kindred', will feature 49 partners, 67 events, and 369 programmes across 44 venues in and around Kuching, covering music, theatre, visual arts, crafts, gastronomy, and community activities. He noted that the festival's momentum had already begun building through its June satellite editions in Sibu and Miri, which drew strong crowds and highlighted WAK's role in uniting communities. Looking ahead, Abdul Karim said the International Dragon Boat Regatta will take place this October, featuring teams from 20 countries, making it one of the busiest tourism months for Sarawak. He urged more stakeholders and sponsors to support such events to reinforce Sarawak's position as a unique cultural destination. Sabah firmly committed to tourist safety: Liew

She gave the assurance in her welcome address at the Coordination Meeting on Tourism with Federal and State agencies, chaired by Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) Minister Dauk Seri Tiong King Sing, here, Tuesday. 'On behalf of the State Government, I extend my sincere appreciation to Motac for your continuous support in strengthening Malaysia's tourism industry. 'With strong collaboration between Motac, the State Government and our enforcement agencies, I am confident that we can make Sabah not only one of the most beautiful destinations in the world, but also one of the safest,' Liew said.. She reiterated that tourist safety is critical in maintaining the confidence of both domestic and international travellers as well as potential tourism investors. 'In this age of social media, even news of an isolated safety incident can spread rapidly and adversely impact our tourism image. That is why we must always remain vigilant.' Acknowledging that in recent times, Sabah has faced several safety concerns involving accidents during activities such as scuba diving, snorkelling and stand-up paddle-boarding in marine and island areas, Liew emphasised that these underline the pressing need for stronger safety protocols, strict compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and enhanced training for guides and boat operators. To address these, she asserted that the State Government has taken decisive action. 'For instance, we have strengthened collaboration with the Royal Malaysia Police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) to boost patrols and monitoring,' said Liew. Multilingual safety signage has been installed at high-risk tourist locations such as at the arrival hall of the Tawau Airport and Sandakan Airport, she added.
