#SHOWBIZ: Merdeka month musical date with Malaysia's 'Gilmore Girls'
While Salamiah and Atilia are not as free-spirited as Lorelei and Rory Gilmore, who were played by Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, respectively, they do identify with their fictitious American counterparts to a large extent.
That is because like the Gilmores, Salamiah and Atilia are independent, strong and passionate about their work, and best of all they are each other's best friends.
MANAGER
At a recent press conference to announce their Aug 16 concert, Konsert Gelombang Bahagiaku, Atilia revealed that she and her mother were given that affectionate nickname by an old friend, the late Fizar Harun, who once served as their manager.
"The 'Gilmore Girls' are young at heart and never give up when the going gets tough. Mum and I are likewise, even though we ain't as hot as Lorelei and Rory," said Atilia.
Salamiah added: "Actually, we are hotter! And we'll prove it on Aug 16. It'll be an evening to remember, a celebration of great music, family, friendship and life."
COMBINATION
Atilia said Konsert Gelombang Bahagiaku combines the names of two of their songs, Salamiah's 'Gelombang' and her own 'Bahagiaku'.
"The combination of both songs' names brings about 'My Waves Of Joy', and there's nothing more joyous than celebrating family love and our shared passion for good music," said Atilia.
"And while mum and I have shared the stage many times in the past, this concert is officially our very first, and I've got a hand in producing it, too."
NON-STOP
Konsert Gelombang Bahagiaku, held at the Plenary Theatre of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre in Jalan Pinang, Kuala Lumpur, is produced by Mujik Wand Production, and lasts for two hours and a half.
Promising non-stop entertainment, it will see Salamiah and Atilia perform 10 songs each, and five duets — a personal record for them.
Salamiah and Atilia will be backed by some of the country's most talented musicians, led by music director Fly Halizor of 'Projek Pistol' band fame, and their guest artistes for the evening will be former 'One Nation Emcees' lead singer Mimi Norhisham (also known as Mimifly) and Loque of 'Monoloque' and 'Butterfingers'.
Describing the concert as a symphony of love and her tribute to her "parent, mentor and idol", Atilia said Konsert Gelombang Bahagiaku promises lots of magical and cherished memories.
DREAM
Atilia said: "This is a dream come true for me. Since I was a little girl, I have always wanted to become a successful singer like mum.
"Getting the chance to share the big stage with her, in our first official concert together, has always been on my bucket list."
Salamiah said: "I am very excited, even though our singing styles differ, I am more R&B and Atilia is more jazz, I believe it will be a truly special combination for music lovers.
"I'm so grateful for this opportunity and it marks my 55th year in music."
DUET
The mother-daughter team will mark their first duet titled 'Age Is Just A Number', and it is a positive message about life, maturity and being oneself.
"The song reflects both of us, two independent women who began as club singers and who do what we love with heart and soul," said Atilia.
Salamiah said: "I'm always blessed to share my love for music with Atilia. We may be different in many ways, but our love of music unites us."
SOULFUL
Fly said: "It will be an emotionally charged evening for all. Expect great music that touches the heart and soul and which celebrates family values this Merdeka Month."
Fly added that he was always honoured to work with Salamiah as her souful and heartfelt vocals always moved him to tears.
"She is awesome, full of heart and a loving 'mama' to all," he said, adding that Atilia was always sporting, friendly and full of ideas.
GUESTS
Atilia said Konsert Gelombang Bahagiaku, which hopes to attract 500 guests, would not be a one-off event, as there would be "many more Salamiah and Atilia team-ups in the years to come".
"As long as we are fit, strong and standing, we will always entertain our fans," said Atilia.
"Music keeps us going, and makes us young at heart!" said Salamiah.
RTM
Salamiah, 74, first found fame in talent search 'Bakat TV' in 1971, organised by Radio Televisyen Malaysia, and she was in the very first season.
She famously sang 'If You Go Away', made popular by Dame Shirley Bassey, and many of her fans liken her to the legendary British singer.
With five studio albums to her credit, Salamiah's best known songs are 'Surat Terakhir', 'Terimalah', 'Hanya Sekali', and 'Tetap Menanti'.
MOVIES
Atilia, 51, began her career performing jingles with her mother from the late 1970s.
She has two studio albums and has starred in movies and television dramas, such as 'Kil' (2013) and 'Liar' (2023).
Atilia appeared in Istana Budaya's 'P. Ramlee The Musical' as the King Of Entertainment's first wife Junaidah Daeng Harris in 2009, and 'Lat Kampung Boy Sebuah Muzikal' as cartoonist Datuk Lat's wife Datin Faezah Zanzali in 2011.
Besides singing and acting, Atilia also runs a yoga studio, which she established in 2015.

FINAS, EPF, PERKESO Strengthen Social Protections For Local Artistes
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- The National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia (FINAS) is strengthening social protection for Malaysian artistes through a collaboration with the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) and the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) with support from the Federation of Malaysian Film Associations (GAFEMA). Its chief executive officer, Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib said the collaboration would allow artistes to sign up for PERKESO's Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SKSPS) and EPF's voluntary i-Saraan scheme as their long-term investment and their welfare, adding that 200 veteran artistes have been approved to receive benefits under the PERKESO SKSPS scheme. 'FINAS has also sponsored the opening of 1,000 i-Saraan accounts. This quota is open till September 2025 with priority for artistes who have never registered,' he said when met after presenting PERKESO contributor certificates and EPF member certificates to local artistes here today.

(Video) Local VFX Artist Sofian Collabs With SEVENTEEN's Jun For 'The Shadow's Edge' Promo
Earlier this month, local visual effects artist Sofian, better known online as Sofyank96, teased his collaboration with K-pop idol Jun (文俊輝/준), a member of SEVENTEEN (세븐틴). In partnership with Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC), the video project forms part of the promotional campaign for the actor's upcoming action–thriller film 'The Shadow's Edge', starring Jackie Chan. Malaysian fans were thrilled by the announcement and have been eagerly awaiting the content creator's latest work. The wait is finally over as the video is now out for the world to see. Watch: Earlier today (Friday, 15th August), Sofian and GSC released the collaboration between the Malaysian influencer and Jun, who plays Hu Feng in 'The Shadow's Edge'. The video opens with the pair seated in a lounge area, where the K-pop idol, in full costume, pulls out a lollipop before Sofian offers to show him a magic trick. The influencer tosses the sweet into the air, where it transforms into a Rubik's Cube, much to the singer's amusement. The singer then takes the 3D combination puzzle from Sofian, insisting he can solve it. However, just as he completes the task, the cube begins to beep and flash with lights like a ticking time bomb. The cube is dropped to the floor before it 'explodes', multiplying into hundreds of identical Rubik's Cubes. The words 'The Shadow's Edge' then appears on the puzzle, inviting fans to watch the film. 'It was such a fun experience shooting a VFX video with Jun, he's full of energy! If you want to see more magic tricks and action, see it in 'The Shadow's Edge'!' Sofian wrote in his captions. SEVENTEEN fans were delighted to finally see the promotional video, with many thanking Sofian for collaborating with Jun. Others remarked on how adorable the singer was when he said 'Jom!' at the end of the clip. Influencer Ceddy Ang even suggested that Sofian should make cameo appearances in future films. We have to agree with Ceddy on this one. WE have all tried our luck at some point, a lucky draw, a radio contest, maybe even a social media giveaway, but let's be honest, most of us do not expect lightning to strike more than once. For one Malaysian man, however, luck is not just a passing moment, it's practically a way of life. Meet 39-year-old Faiz Aizuddin Azami, a man who has defied the odds and turned what began as simple curiosity into a full-blown lifestyle. Over the past 21 years, he has won more than 5,000 prizes, with a total value reaching into the millions of ringgit. What sounds like a dream to most is Faiz's everyday reality. From gadgets to holidays, cars to cash, he's taken home prizes so valuable that their combined worth could buy several low-cost homes. It may sound unbelievable, almost like a fantasy, but for Faiz, this is very much real life. 'I've been actively entering contests since 2004 right after SPM. My first big win was through a slogan-based SMS contest with DiGi, where I won 10 months' worth of salary, approximately RM48,000. 'That was a huge amount for a student like me at the time, and it truly changed the way I looked at contests. Since then, I've entered thousands and won over 5,000 prizes,' he said when contacted by Sinar Daily recently. He now focuses full-time on educational motivation work and contesting, aiming to win at least 1,000 prizes a year, with a targeted value of RM100,000 annually. What started as a lucky break has become a rewarding lifestyle. Massive prize haul Among Faiz's most jaw-dropping wins was a luxury VIP holiday for ten people to four major theme parks in Los Angeles, complete with over RM100,000 in spending money. 'The most expensive prize I ever won was a two-week VIP trip for 10 people to four theme parks in California back in 2008. It came with cash too, the total value was around RM180,000. 'If I added up everything I've won since 2004, I reckon I could have bought a few low-cost houses by now,' he said. He shared that he took the holiday with his own group of friends, everything fully paid for. More recently, Faiz also won a brand-new Toyota Vios worth around RM91,000. But that's only scratching the surface. Over the years, Faiz has enjoyed all-expenses-paid holidays to the United Kingdom, Türkiye, France, Japan, Korea, and other international destinations, turning once-in-a-lifetime trips into something almost routine. In addition to luxury travel, Faiz has taken home RM24,000 in cash and an astonishing number of physical prizes, including ten 55-inch TVs, twenty refrigerators, and thirty washing machines. He has also won hundreds of home appliances, fom the latest smartphones and tablets to kitchen gadgets and electronics. One especially memorable win was a home renovation package worth over RM10,000. On the automotive front, Faiz has won eight motorcycles and two cars: a Proton X50 and a Mini Cooper. 'I once won a Mini Cooper worth RM235,000, but I shared that prize with six other friends. So, my share wasn't huge, but it's still a sweet memory,' he added. Many of these wins came from collaborations with fellow contest enthusiasts, showing not just his luck but also his skill in navigating the competition world. These prizes have brought him not only material rewards but unforgettable life experiences. He shared that he never joins a contest without first checking who the organiser is. If it's a well-known and trusted brand like Nestlé, P&G, or major banks, he feels more confident entering. 'But if a contest comes from a suspicious page, or asks for too much personal information like your full ID number or bank account details right away, I just skip it. That's a big red flag. 'Also, if they pressure you to DM quickly or click on strange links, I avoid it,' he said. If an agency is managing the contest, he will check their track record first. He also watches how influencers run their contests, if the announcements are vague or winners are never revealed, he becomes suspicious. He admitted that he has been promised prizes he never received before. When asked if he has ever been scammed, Faiz said no, but his mother was tricked early on. She fell for a fake contest claiming she'd won a big prize, a car, but had to pay a 'processing fee.' She paid around RM5,000 but ended up receiving just cheap mattresses and goods, after which the organisers disappeared without a trace. 'Since then, I've been much more careful and learned from that experience so I don't get scammed again,' he said. Tips for smart competing Faiz shared that he usually enters contests on his own, though he sometimes involves family members to boost his chances. Most of the competitions he joins are free, but some do require purchases, such as buying items from the supermarket and then submitting a receipt or slogan. He stressed that to win, participants need to understand the rules and develop their own strategies. For example, contests that reward the highest spenders with big prizes like cars require significant investment, while others are more about luck, with some first-time participants winning grand prizes unexpectedly. 'First, always read the terms and conditions carefully. A lot of people just submit without really understanding the rules. 'Next, for slogan-based contests, be original and emotional. Judges tend to favour lines that touch the heart or bring a smile. If creativity is needed, use wordplay, rhyme, or unexpected twists to stand out. 'And lastly, consistency. If you only join one contest, it's hard to win. But if you enter ten, your chances increase significantly,' he said. Faiz admitted that he hasn't always been lucky. He once spent tens of thousands on a contest and walked away with nothing. There were even times he won but never received the prize. Still, he has learned how to improve his odds and maintain consistency over time. For beginners, he suggested starting with simple contests like those that only require a comment and share, then gradually trying slogan or creative-based ones. He also reminded people to always read the terms, keep proof of entry, and most importantly, enjoy the process. According to him, this is a marathon, not a sprint, the prizes are just a bonus.
