87 days until the Texans' 2025 season opener: Who has worn No. 87?
The Houston Texans are less than 100 days away from kicking off the 2025 season in Los Angeles against the Rams at SoFi Stadium and we're counting down the days until a victory ensues on the west coast.
Texans Wire will each day tell you which player has worn the number of the day leading up to kickoff and pick the player who ensured the number best during their time at NRG Stadium. As for today, let's take a look at who has won No. 87 since the inaugural season in 2002.
Texans players to wear No. 87
No. 87 currently belongs to second-year tight end Cade Stover. Drafted out of Ohio State in 2024, Stover's relationship with C.J. Stroud at Ohio State was expected to transition from Columbus to Houston last season. In spurts, one could see the chemistry between the two Buckeyes, who totaled 15 catches for 133 yards and a touchdown in 15 games.
Stover did miss some time because of a shoulder injury suffered in Week 15's win over the Miami Dolphins and didn't see action in the playoffs. Fully healthy, he's been one of the more promising names at offseason workouts in the passing attack and could expand his role in the passing game this fall, eventually surpassing Dalton Schultz on the depth chart.
Right now, though, Stover wasn't the best player to wear No. 87 in a Texans' uniform.
TE Cade Stover (2024-present)
WR Damiere Byrd (2023)
TE Darren Fells (2019-2020)
WR Demaryius Thomas (2018)
TE C. J. Fiedorowicz (2014-2017)
WR "E.Z." Nwachukwu (2013)
TE Steve Skelton (2012)
TE Anthony Hill (2009-2010)
TE Mark Bruener (2004-2008)
WR Derick Armstrong (2003)
WR JaJuan Dawson (2002)
Best Player: C. J. Fiedorowicz
No one really stands out, but Fiedorowicz was probably the closest thing to a stable tight end since the days of Owen Daniels. The first of the Iowa tight end trends to make waves in the NFL, Fiedorowicz posted his best season in 2016, totaling 54 receptions for 559 yards and four touchdowns in 15 games. He was also essential in helping Houston make the postseason under the quarterback Brock Osweiler.
But injuries derailed his career, ultimately forcing him to retire after the 2017 season. For his Texans' career, Fiedorowicz finished with 89 catches for 881 yards and six touchdowns.

Jonnu Smith, Jalen Ramsey Absent From Dolphins Minicamp Amid Trade Buzz
Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith (9) runs a route against the Houston Texans in the second half of an NFL football game, Sunday, Dec 15, 2024 in Houston. (AP Photo/Maria Lysaker) The Pittsburgh Steelers are keeping their eyes on the Miami Dolphins, who have two star players absent from mandatory minicamp. The Miami Dolphins were without two key veterans on the first day of mandatory minicamp, as tight end Jonnu Smith and cornerback Jalen Ramsey were both no-shows. That has only further fueled the trade speculation involving the Pittsburgh Steelers. Advertisement Smith's absence is reportedly contract-related. After a career-best season in 2024, where he recorded 88 receptions for 884 yards and set the Dolphins' single-season record for catches by a tight end, the 29-year-old is seeking a new deal. Last offseason, he signed a two-year, $4 million contract that now looks like a major bargain given his production and impact in Mike McDaniel's offense. As the situation drags on without a resolution, Smith remains a name to watch, especially for the Steelers, who have been consistently linked to him in recent months. On the surface, tight end isn't a glaring need in Pittsburgh. The Steelers already feature a solid duo in Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington. However, offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has long favored heavy tight end personnel, and Smith is already familiar with his system, having played under him in both Tennessee and Atlanta. The 30-year-old cornerback is entering his 10th NFL season and remains one of the league's premier defensive backs. A seven-time Pro Bowler and three-time First-Team All-Pro, Ramsey is still under contract through 2028 on a deal worth $72 million. Advertisement A potential Steelers secondary featuring Ramsey, Joey Porter Jr., and Darius Slay would be among the most talented in the league, offering head coach Mike Tomlin a rare combination of experience and youth on the back end. However, such a move would likely require cap gymnastics and could complicate contract discussions with other stars, namely All-Pro pass rusher T.J. Watt, who is still awaiting a contract extension. While the Steelers have more pressing roster needs and contractual priorities, the idea of landing both Smith and Ramsey isn't out of the realm of possibility. If Pittsburgh believes it is in a win-now window, these two veterans could be difference-makers in a wide-open AFC North. USC football countdown to kickoff continues—Anthony Muñoz in focus
USC football countdown to kickoff continues—Anthony Muñoz in focus The countdown to USC's 2025 football season is officially on! The Trojans kick off their new campaign 77 days from today. You need something to help you while away the days and hours in the spring and summer. This is one way to do so. In this new series, countdown to kickoff, we will be counting down the days by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number. Today, we take a look back at one of the greatest offensive linemen to ever play the game of football, Anthony Muñoz. Position: Offensive line Years played at USC: 1976-1979 Career highlights: Muñoz played at USC from 1976 through 1979. However, he unfortunately dealt with injuries throughout his USC career, and was forced to miss time in three of his four college seasons. Despite this, he was still named a second-team All-American and first-team All-Pac-10 as a junior in 1978. During the first game of his senior season in 1979, Muñoz suffered a knee injury that required surgery and was widely expected to end his season. However, Muñoz defied the odds returning in time for the Rose Bowl against Ohio State. The Trojans won, 17-16, with Heisman Trophy-winning running back Charles White leading the way, spoiling the Buckeyes bid for a perfect season and likely AP national championship. After USC: Sadly, Muñoz did not accomplish much after graduating from USC. All that he did—after being selected third overall in the 1980 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals—was play 13 professional seasons, be selected to 11 Pro Bowls, earn nine first-team All-Pro honors, and win the 1991 NFL Man of the Year (now known as the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year) award. So yeah, a very disappointing resume. Muñoz was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1998. In 2019, he was named to the league's 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. Muñoz is widely considered to be one of the greatest, if not the single greatest, offensive linemen of all-time.

Wisconsin football has a new highest-ranked commit in the class of 2026
Wisconsin football has a new highest-ranked commit in the class of 2026 Wisconsin football landed a commitment from class of 2026 three-star defensive back Zachary Taylor on Friday. Taylor chose the Badgers over top contenders Houston, Texas Tech and TCU. He completed visits to the latter two on June 3 and May 2, respectively, plus was scheduled to visit Houston on June 19. Just one full week after his June 6 official visit to Madison, Wisconsin, Taylor pledged to the Badgers. 247Sports ranks the Fulshear, Texas, native as the No. 540 overall player in the class of 2026, the No. 43 cornerback and the No. 76 recruit from his home state. He became Wisconsin's 12th commitment in the 2026 cycle. Notably, he is now the highest-ranked recruit of that group, edging three-star defensive lineman Djidjou Bah. His commitment pushed the class up to No. 35 nationally and No. 12 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell and his staff are working to deliver a third consecutive top-25 recruiting class. While the program's 2026 class is a significant distance from that threshold, partially because it is still looking for its first blue-chip commit, several of its top targets remain uncommitted. Taylor's commitment may begin a run of positive recruiting news in that regard.
