Who is the highest-paid SEC assistant coach? Ole Miss DC Pete Golding leads group
In just three seasons at Ole Miss, Pete Golding has built the Rebels' defense into one of the best units in the country.
For that, the third-year Rebels coordinator is now the highest-paid assistant coach in the SEC and one of the top in college football.
Noted by the Clarion-Ledger, part of the USA TODAY Network, Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss rewarded Golding with a three-year contract extension this past offseason that pushed him up the ladder among the highest-paid assistants in the SEC with a salary of $2.55 million for this upcoming season.

Hired ahead of the 2023 season by Kiffin, Golding's new contract − which he signed on Feb. 25 of this year − will give him a $300,000 pay increase from his previous contract for the 2025-26 season. He was scheduled to make $2.25 million this year.
Using last year's USA Today's highest-paid assistant coaches database as a reference, Golding was previously the fourth-highest-paid assistant coach in the country among public universities and colleges. His new contract now makes him the second-highest-paid assistant, only behind new Penn State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, who is making an annual base salary of $3.1 million.
Ole Miss finished just behind Knowles' then-Ohio State Buckeyes defense last season as the No. 2 scoring defense in the country at 14.38 points per game.
Golding's unit is set to open the 2025 season against Georgia State on Saturday, Aug. 30 at 7:45 p.m. ET at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
Here's more on Golding's recent contract extension and salary increase at Ole Miss:
Pete Golding Ole Miss contract extension, salary details
Noted by the Clarion-Ledger, Golding signed a three-year contract extension with Ole Miss that will keep him in Oxford through the 2027-28 season. His salary for the current 2025-26 is listed at $2.55 million, with him having the opportunity of making an additional $200,000 in potential incentive pay: $50,000 for Ole Miss winning the SEC championship game and $150,000 for Ole Miss winning the entire College Football Playoff.
Golding's annual salary will increase each of the next two seasons, as he is set to make $2.6 million from Feb. 1, 2026 to Jan. 31, 2027 and then $2.7 million from Feb. 1, 2027 to Jan. 31, 2028.

Insider Connects Jon Gruden to Tennessee Volunteers Coaching Job
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Jon Gruden is definitely making a name for himself on the media circuit, currently working for Barstool Sports. But you have to think that he would love to coach again, and the Tennessee Volunteers could be calling his name. Joe Rexrode of The Athletic has named Gruden among the 25 most interesting people to watch in college football heading into 2025, and he surmises that the former NFL coach could ultimately make the jump to the SEC. More news: Jon Gruden Wastes No Time Picking the Best Current NFL Quarterback "He just said he'd 'die to coach in the SEC,' so an on-campus opportunity seems most likely for a guy who hasn't been in college football since he coached receivers for Paul Hackett at Pitt in 1991," Rexrode wrote. "Oklahoma? LSU? Arkansas? Tennessee, gratifying the fans who have been most obsessed with him over the years, say after Josh Heupel leaves to take the Oklahoma job? Let's get the speculation cooking." Jon Gruden, head coach of the Oakland Raiders looks on prior to the NFL game against the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium on November 18, 2018 in Glendale, Arizona. Jon Gruden, head coach of the Oakland Raiders looks on prior to the NFL game against the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium on November 18, 2018 in Glendale, has experienced considerable success since taking over as Volunteers head coach in 2021, going 37-15 and most recently leading them to the College Football Playoff. Sure, they got smacked by Ohio State, but who didn't last winter? The thing is, Heupel played quarterback at Oklahoma and put together some terrific years for the Sooners, so it stands to reason that he may want to return to his alma mater, especially with Brent Venables struggling mightily since assuming his post as Oklahoma head coach in 2022. Should Heupel decide to leave Tennessee, you can bet that Gruden's name will be connected to the Vols, and it would not be the least bit surprising if he expressed interest. Even if Gruden seems perfectly content with his media career, coaching is in his blood, and he is unquestionably good at it. The 61-year-old famously led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl championship back during the 2002-03 NFL campaign and logged four double-digit win seasons in a span of six years between 2000 and 2005 with the Oakland Raiders and the Buccaneers. Gruden spent two stints with the Raiders overall, but has not coached in the NFL since 2021. More news: Ex-Raiders Coach Jon Gruden Hints a Coaching Comeback Is in the Works Seeing Gruden on the collegiate level — where he has never held a head-coaching job — would certainly be interesting, and a big SEC school would be absolutely perfect for his equally big personality. Of course, until some movement actually happens as far as Tennessee's coaching staff is concerned, all of this is nothing more than conjecture at this point. It's definitely fun to think about, though. For more on college football, head to Newsweek Sports.

Quinshon Judkins fantasy football preview 2025: Stats, season outlook, predictions
Rotoworld Staff, Quinshon Judkins 2025 Fantasy Preview 2024: Originally recruited to Ole Miss, Judkins (6'/221) was inarguably the best freshman running back in the country in 2022, totaling 1,567 yards and 16 touchdowns on 274 carries. His efficiency plummeted from 5.7 yards per carry to 4.3 in his sophomore season, as he supplied 1,158 yards on a nearly identical workload. Looking for a power complement to TreVeyon Henderson, Ohio State then lured Judkins away from Ole Miss ahead of their 2024 national championship campaign. What's changed: Splitting the backfield with another future NFL back, Judkins rushed only 194 times, but his efficiency rebounded as he went off for 1,060 yards and 14 scores. Judkins is a serviceable pass-catcher but nothing more, having caught 22 balls in each of his final two seasons. The former Buckeye was a physical and consistent runner in college, but scouts were quick to point out his lack of top-end speed. Outlook: Second-rounder Judkins was supposed to begin his rookie year as the Browns' clear-cut early-down back, but he was arrested and charged with domestic violence in July. Still unsigned as of this writing, Judkins appears destined for a stay on the commissioner's exempt list, and might not even play NFL football in 2025. That leaves holdover Jerome Ford and fellow rookie Dylan Sampson as the Browns' top two backs for the time being.
