China vows to regulate ‘irrational' competition in EV industry
The Cabinet meeting, presided by Chinese Premier Li Qiang, was held as a two-year price war in the world's largest auto market only intensifies.
China will focus on promoting the high-quality development of the electric vehicle industry and implement comprehensive measures in both the short- and long-term to address the 'phenomenon of irrational competition' in the sector, CCTV quoted the Cabinet as saying, without giving further details.
The Cabinet will also urge the main automakers to fulfil commitments on supplier payment terms and promised to help them boost competitiveness through technological innovation and quality improvement.
Industry regulators and executives have previously warned of excessive competition and called on automakers to halt the bruising price war which they say threatens the sector's health and sustainable development.
Concerns about oversupply persist, with new vehicles being shipped overseas as 'used' since 2019, according to a Reuters report in late June.
Separately, the Cabinet meeting discussed boosting domestic consumption, with policymakers vowing to systematically remove unreasonable restrictions that hinder household spending and optimise policies for a consumer goods trade-in program. REUTERS

The same share of respondents in the two-day poll - 41% - said they approved of Trump's overall performance as president, matching a June 21-23 reading that marked the lowest of Trump's second term so far. Trump's approval rating on immigration was 43% in the June poll. The Republican president has ordered a nationwide campaign to arrest migrants in the country illegally and has vowed to deport millions of people, executing raids at work sites including farms that were largely exempted from enforcement during his first term. The raids often feature masked officials and have provoked dozens of lawsuits. Only 28% of poll respondents said they agreed with a statement that "immigration arrests at places of work are good for the country," compared with 54% who disagreed. Republicans were notably divided, with 56% in favor of workplace raids, 24% opposed and about 20% saying they were unsure. Democrats overwhelmingly disagreed. In one recent immigration raid of a farm in California, one worker died and hundreds were arrested. Republicans were also divided when asked if they agreed with a statement that arrests of immigrants should be carried out like military operations. Sixty percent agreed and 25% disagreed. Overall, just one in three Americans supported the notion, and one in 10 Democrats. Americans were more clearly divided along partisan lines on whether immigration enforcement officials should wear masks during raids. Ukrainian drone kills one in Russia's Belgorod, governor says

Gladkov said all six injured were being treated in hospital for shrapnel wounds. Six homes suffered damage. Russia's Defence Ministry said Russian air defence units had destroyed 48 Ukrainian drones over a 3-1/2-hour period ending at 11.30 p.m. (2030 GMT). Twenty-nine of the drones were destroyed over Belgorod region on the Ukrainian border, with a further 16 over Bryansk region, another border region to the west. Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of targeting civilians, something both sides deny, in the course of the war, now well into its fourth year. REUTERS

Zelenskiy has carried out a political reshuffle this week, nominating as his new prime minister Yulia Svyrydenko, the driving force behind a minerals deal with the United States. Outgoing prime minister Denys Shmyhal has been put forward as the new defence minister. The nominations, which require parliamentary approval, came as diplomatic efforts to end the war with Russia, now in its fourth year, have stalled and as Ukraine seeks to revive its cash-strapped economy and build up a domestic arms industry. Zelenskiy said he, Shmyhal and outgoing defence minister Rustem Umerov had decided at a meeting on Wednesday that the defence ministry would have "greater influence in the domain of arms production". "Ukrainian-made weapons now make up about 40% of those used at the front and in our operations," Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address. "This is already significantly more than at any time in our country's independence. The production volumes are truly large, but we need more. "Our goal is to reach 50% Ukrainian-made weaponry within the first six months of the new government, by expanding our domestic production. I am confident this is achievable, though not easy."
