Basketball Ireland to fulfill Israel qualifier but only at neutral venue
The association admitted recently that they were "assessing next steps" having been drawn away the Israelis in Group A, along with home fixtures against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Luxembourg, in the qualifying stage which is set to begin in November.
But in a statement released on Friday, Basketball Ireland confirmed they will take on Israel on November 18th, but only if it is played elsewhere.
"After extensive deliberation with various stakeholders, the Board of Basketball Ireland has decided that Ireland will compete in the upcoming FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2027 Qualifiers.
"Mindful of the dreadful humanitarian situation in Gaza, the Board seriously considered all options available, including a withdrawal from the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2027 Qualifiers.
"Ultimately it is not individual federations, such as Basketball Ireland, who determine who is permitted to enter and play international tournaments, it is the responsibility of FIBA Europe and other international sporting bodies.
"Whilst we fully acknowledge the tragic events of October 7th, 2023, Basketball Ireland is deeply concerned with the ongoing suffering being faced by the people of Gaza and has raised this with FIBA Europe. We have also informed FIBA Europe that we will only face Israel in a neutral venue.
"Basketball Ireland has already experienced a 14-year absence from international basketball in the recent past. We have since worked tirelessly on and off the court to return to the highest level and the punitive sanctions from FIBA Europe should we elect not to participate in FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2027 Qualifiers would be extremely damaging to Irish basketball and the women's game.
"Upon commencement of FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2027 Qualifiers competition, Basketball Ireland would have been subject to a fine of up to €80,000 should Ireland fail to fulfil their first fixture with Israel, while failure to play the return game would lead to an additional fine of up to €100,000 and removal from the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2027 Qualifiers, as well as the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2029 Qualifiers.
"Should Basketball Ireland have elected to withdraw from the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2027 Qualifiers campaign entirely before it commenced, a fine of up to €30,000 would be applied, while FIBA Europe rules state that there is an option to impose further sanctions, including disqualification from future competitions and additional financial penalties."
Basketball Ireland CEO John Feehan, added: 'Facing Israel in these circumstances is not a scenario we would wish, but there has been no change in Israel's status within sport, made by FIBA Europe, the IOC or any other major sporting body.
"FIBA Europe have been quite clear to us that sanctions would be imposed on Basketball Ireland, should we elect not to play, which would be hugely damaging to the sport here.
'Naturally there is major concern about the suffering being inflicted on the people of Gaza, which is frankly unacceptable. We would implore all parties in the current conflict to return to peace and for humanitarian aid to be fully restored to Gaza.'

Billy Loughnane takes first Group One win on Rebel's Romance
Irish jockey Billy Loughnane registered his first Group One victory when guiding globetrotting superstar Rebel's Romance to the Westminster 135th Grosser Preis von Berlin at Hoppegarten. A firm favourite of trainer Charlie Appleby, the seven-year-old began his Group One haul in this very race back in 2022 and three years on he was back in the German capital to strike for the eighth time at the highest level. Keen to keep things simple, Rebel's Romance was up with the pace throughout the early stages, keeping close tabs on Andre Fabre's Junko and when straightening for home he showed his class to bravely hold off the French challenger. It was in fact a fourth Group One success on German soil for the well-travelled dual Breeders' Cup Turf hero who could return to Del Mar for another crack at the season-ending showpiece, with Coral making him the 5-1 co second-favourite for a third Stateside victory. Appleby said: "It's great for Billy, but more importantly great for the horse who keeps sparkling on all continents. "To have him carry on at the top level is fantastic for Sheikh Mohammed and I see this as a pre-cursor for the Canadian International at Woodbine and then the Breeders' Cup." Loughnane (19) has ridden eight winners from 12 rides for Appleby this season and it is fitting his first success at the top table comes in Germany, having notched his first Group-race triumph at Cologne in April last year. It caps a memorable weekend for his teenage pilot who also won the Sweet Solera Stakes in the royal blue of Appleby and Godolphin aboard Dance To The Music at Newmarket on Saturday. Loughnane told Wettstar: "This is a feeling I can't describe, it's a feeling of ecstasy, what a horse and I'm very lucky to be riding in these colours and riding a horse like this. "He's a star of a horse and has been going for a good few seasons now. Big thanks go to William Buick and I spoke to him last night and he told me exactly what to do. He's a superstar." Meanwhile, the 19-year-old's father Mark Loughnane was the proudest man on Wolverhampton racecourse having watched his son's finest hour from Dunstall Park. He told Sky Sports Racing: "Words can't describe something like that and it is something Billy has dreamt about all his life, it was amazing. "I had an even-money favourite in the first but I was more on my phone watching Billy and we can't thank Mr Appleby and George Boughey and people like that enough. His agent Tony Hind has done a super job and they've all really catapulted Billy to the next level but as a dad, I'm proud as punch. "When it was talked about he might be riding Rebel's Romance he rang me straight away and was like a child in a sweet shop and he said 'I'm on this horse of Mr Appleby's and it's going to be great'. I told him just to relax as a lot can happen between races. "I've spoken to him on the phone and he's absolutely elated. I was the first one on the phone and he's bouncing and for a young fellow, he's a super young man. What he's done in a short space of time, I've helped him get started, and now that's it off he goes. "It's awesome for our house and as a family, his mum is here racing today and we're all absolutely cock-a-hoop for him."

Conor McGregor ‘not fit' to be president, says Darragh O'Brien
The minister asked people to 'draw the comparison to what our president has done, and what someone like Conor McGregor might do' Conor McGregor would not be fit to be president, a minister has said. Transport Minister Darragh O'Brien compared MMA fighter McGregor (37), to Ireland's outgoing president Michael D Higgins, who is a former arts minister and sociology lecturer. Mr O'Brien said McGregor was free to challenge the process to get on the presidential ballot paper but that the Irish constitution was 'clear'. Ms Hand (35), successfully sued McGregor in a civil court over an incident in which he was alleged to have 'brutally raped and battered' her in a penthouse at a south Dublin hotel in December 2018. Ms Hand was awarded almost €250,000 in damages and McGregor was also ordered to pay about €1.3 million in legal costs following the November trial.

'Feels like the beginning': Dubliner Mark McNamee makes Green Bay Packers debut
Mark McNamee played in his first game for the Green Bay Packers on Saturday night, a 30-10 pre-season defeat to the New York Jets. Remarkably, the Dubliner did so before taking part in his first official practice with the Packers. McNamee signed a contract with the team last month to be their International Player Pathway Program designee but his arrival in Wisconsin was delayed as he awaited a visa. He only received the green light for his visa earlier this week and arrived in the States late on Friday night. The 25-year-old, who was a goalkeeper with Ballyboden St Enda's, took all three kick-offs for the Packers. He is the second Irish player on their roster, joining Wicklow-born Daniel Whelan who took six punts in Saturday's game. "It's only really sinking in now," McNamee said. "I knew I had a job to do, so that was kind of my focus. I wasn't really thinking about the occasion at all, but it's unbelievable. Obviously disappointed in the result first and foremost, but to actually have suited up and played in the NFL is incredible and feels like it's the beginning, which is definitely a good moment for me and my family." Derry native Jude McAtamney, who is on the New York Giants' roster, featured in his side's 34-25 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. The Swatragh man kicked a 43-yard field goal and also an extra point.
