SA Boccia team bags 10 medals at Regional Championships
Team South Africa finished 2nd on the medal table at the championships held in Cairo from 29 July - 3 August.
'Our team has shown remarkable effort, resilience, and determination throughout the tournament. Each athlete represented the country with heart and grit, and we return home inspired by their courage and commitment', said SASAPD President Jean Miggels.
Boccia (pronounced 'Bot-cha') is split into four classes, BC1-4 and is a game designed specifically for athletes with a disability affecting locomotor function.
On Friday, Thominic von Schlicht made his mark at the championships after a 5-year absence by being crowned African champion in the BC4 Male Singles division and booking his place at the 2026 World Boccia Championships.
And on Saturday, the BC1/2 team, made up of Seipati Majoe, Liakath Aziz, and Brett Dakin, qualified for the World Champs.
Boccia is practised in more than 75 countries worldwide, and it has no Olympic counterpart.

A SOUTH African footballer has secured a full soccer scholarship to the University of Arizona in the United States, following a standout performance at the 2025 Engen Knockout Challenge. Adrielle Mibe, who represented the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Ladies, captained her team to victory in the Gauteng leg of the tournament. She was named both Player of the Tournament and Midfielder of the Tournament, capping off a three-year run in the competition. 'Playing at the Engen Knockout Challenge has always been a great experience,' said Mibe. 'I'm happy I was able to end my stint with a victory alongside my teammates. I'm grateful to Engen for creating this platform where players like me can showcase our talent. I look forward to heading to the U.S., elevating my game, improving myself, and hopefully making it into a more professional league.'
