Around Utah, small businesses are popping up and expanding thanks to one highly addictive food craze: Dubai chocolate.
The intrigue: The pistachio-filled treats are in such overwhelming demand that tiny in-home confectioners have managed to seize on the trend without being eclipsed by bigger businesses.
What they're saying:"I'm having to restock every other day," said Bayleigh Farris, who launched Enchanted Delights in Ogden last year to sell mini-cakes.
"My cake business has turned into a chocolate bar business with how often I'm getting Dubai orders," Farris told Axios.
Catch up quick: Dubai chocolate — milk chocolate filled with pistachio butter and crunchy phyllo dough — vaulted to culinary stardom in December 2023, when a UAE-based food influencer took to TikTok with an experimental candy bar she'd bought from a Dubai chocolatier.
By fall 2024, the trend had captivated the sweet teeth of the world, spawning dupes and warnings of scams.
State of play: That's when the mom-and-pops stepped in, learning recipes and advertising small batches online. Now customers are swarming them like sharks in a blood frenzy.
"If I post that I have 60 chocolate bars, they're gone in 2-4 hours," said Emilee Citte, who plans to expand her Forbidden Fruits candies in Willard to meet the Dubai demand. "I honestly don't see an end of it any time soon. The hype just grows. It's been one of the longest trends I've seen."
The big picture: Utah's famous taste for sugar supports a lot of small, by-the-order dessert shops, overwhelmingly founded by women who operate out of home kitchens and hustle between personal deliveries and farmers markets.
The fine print: Utah has relatively flexible licensing for homemade food sales, allowing those businesses to pivot to the trendy new product.
Meanwhile, some home cooks have gone into business precisely because their experiments with Dubai chocolate were so successful.
Case in point:"It was the moment I tasted my first Dubai chocolate bar that something truly sparked," said Christine Rizzo-Thompson, who founded North Ogden's Chocobai in February, specializing in the pistachio candy after months of recipe-tinkering.
"The Dubai chocolate bar is all about luxury, and that's exactly what I aim to provide — luxury chocolate right here in Utah," Rizzo-Thompson told Axios.
Yes, but: Tiny startups are still getting more orders than they can fill as chocoholics declare their loyalties to their hometown dealers, Citte said.

Even just a small dip in tourism could be very costly since Canadian travelers typically account for the highest number of international visitors to the U.S., according to the U.S. Travel Association. In 2024 alone, a total of 20.4 million Canadians visited the country, generating $20.5 billion in spending. A 10 percent reduction in visitor numbers, for example, would equate to a potential loss of $2.1 billion. Some states will likely suffer more than others—Florida, California, Nevada, New York, and Texas tend to be the most popular states for Canadian visitors—but others have started to feel the crunch as well. In New Hampshire, which borders the eastern part of Canada, officials are seeing a dramatic drop in Canadian tourism. "Absolutely, the Canadian numbers are lower this year, for sure," Taylor Caswell, New Hampshire's commissioner for business and economic affairs, told local WMUR-TV. "They're running at about 30 percent underneath what we've seen in prior years." In Montana, credit card transactions have shown the impact of fewer tourists. Spending by Canadians in Kalispell, in the western part of the state, has decreased by an average of about 37 percent per month from January to April, Diane Medler, the executive director of Discover Kalispell, told NBC Montana. In nearby Whitefish, Canadian credit card spending has dropped 25 percent through the month of May, Zak Anderson, the executive director at Explore Whitefish, told the network. But not everyone is giving up. In September, for example, New Hampshire is planning its own trade delegation visit, WMUR-TV reported. "We're going to continue to focus on our relationships with Canada, which are quite important," the state's Gov. Kelly Ayotte said, according to the network. This same logic is echoed by GoBankingRates in a separate article from 2024. The piece touches on the same fundamental downside of car purchasing: depreciation. However, the level of depreciation depends somewhat on how new the car is. For instance, if you buy a car right when it comes out, it can lose as much as 20% of its value within the first 12 months of purchase. And depending on the make and model of the vehicle one buys, depreciation rates can hit as high as 60% after just five years. Bach recommends that those shopping for a new car should consider looking for used models between 3-5 years old. Often, these models will still have some of their original manufacturer's warranty. It's also true that recalls may have already been issued for a vehicle that's been around for a few years. More importantly, however, is that in buying a lightly used car, drivers can bypass eating the cost of its heftiest depreciation years. Lease or Buy? Some financial experts swear by the ' one-percent rule ' when it comes to leasing a vehicle. Basically, this car leasing strategy works as follows: Take the monthly payment then divide it by the total cost of the vehicle, including applicable taxes. If the monthly lease payment is equal to or close to 1% or less of the total cost, it's considered a great lease deal. But there are other factors to consider with leasing a vehicle. First: Mileage. Many leases come with a standard 12,000-mile per year limit, with more miles incurring greater costs. Road warriors may need additional breathing room on their odometers, so this option could end up costing them more money down the road. Moreover, if one purchases a lightly used car from a manufacturer renowned for its reliability, then that could ultimately be a more cost-effective solution.
