UAE positions itself as global bridge for cross-border cooperation, minister says
The UAE is intensifying efforts to solidify its standing as a global bridge for international cooperation, reaffirming its commitment to building inclusive, mutually beneficial global partnerships, and bridging south-north divide. Speaking during the Global South Economic Forum (GSEF), at the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy on Tuesday, Ahmed bin Ali Al Sayegh, Minister of State at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, underscored the country's evolving diplomatic strategy, which places a strong emphasis on fostering dialogue and collaboration between the Global South and the Global North. 'We have to reclaim global narratives towards inclusivity, and finally, strengthen South-South and equally important South-North partnerships based on mutual respect, shared opportunity and strategic autonomy,' said Al Sayegh. 'The UAE is proud to contribute to this vision in various ways, including its outward looking economic diplomacy, whether through investments in clean energy, digital connectivity, food security or development financing. We remain committed to enabling pathways for shared prosperity as a nation at the crossroads of continents and cultures. The UAE sees its role not only as a bridge, but also as a collaborator and catalyst for cooperation that transcends geography. Our region has always been open for trade, has always been connected with friendships and partnerships, and I believe this forum today bodes well to continuing these hundreds of years old tradition and I look forward to hearing more about its outcomes.' Other experts also reiterated that the UAE's positioning as a collaborative nexus for global engagement continues to evolve in parallel with its strategic investments in sustainable development, innovation ecosystems, and inclusive diplomacy. Nickolay Mladenov, Director General of the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy, echoed this sentiment, while pointing to a palpable shift in global influence and ambition. 'We're witnessing today a shift… a shift, not just in the economic weight, but very importantly, a shift in the intellectual leadership, in innovation and in ambition coming from the global south,' said Mladenov. 'From Sao Paulo to Nairobi, from New Delhi to Jakarta, voices from the south are pushing in and rebalancing the local rules of engagement, and they're absolutely right to do so.' According to a recent Boston Consulting Group (BCG) report, Global South is becoming a powerhouse of economic growth. Excluding China, the bloc of 133 nations accounts for roughly 18 percent of global GDP. Including China, that share rises to 40 percent -- and represents 65 percent of the global population. The combined GDP of these nations is projected to grow by 4.2 percent annually through 2029, more than double the 1.9 percent expected for advanced economies. Trade within the Global South is also rising, with South-South trade projected to grow at a CAGR of 3.8 percent through 2033, compared to 2.2 percent for North-North trade. By 2033, Global South trade could reach US$14 trillion annually. He added, 'Intra South trade and investment are growing faster than ever. Many global south countries now control critical resources for the global energy transition, over 65 per cent of populations under 30 are in the Global South. It's not just that they're there…they're digitally connected, they're creative, and they're ready to shape the future. 'Today, we look at the global south that is adopting technologies and adapting them to use and leapfrog traditional development models. All of this is happening right in front of our eyes, and yet, with all that potential around us, the global multinational architecture has still not caught up to these changes, and this is why we wanted to have the discussions in the forum today.' Conduit between regions Mladenov emphasised the UAE's readiness to serve as a conduit between regions at a time of heightened geopolitical fragmentation. 'Here in Abu Dhabi and the UAE, we're very happy to play the connecting role that links north and south through diplomacy, through logistics, through innovation, through the comprehensive and economic partnership agreements. The UAE has sought to build bridges at a time when others build walls. We desperately need to think about the future of multi polarity, not with confusion and fear, but with confidence. We need to harness the new technologies of the future without deepening the divides that already exist. We need to think about building systems of trade, of investment, of connectivity that reflect the priorities of the world.'

DEWA enhances its emergency preparedness through smart infrastructure and proactive plans
Dubai, UAE: Many regions around the world, including Europe and the Americas, face significant challenges in ensuring the stability of energy and water networks, especially with the increasing pressures resulting from climate change, digital transformation and rising demand. In 2025, several European countries experienced frequent power outages due to weather fluctuations and inefficient ageing infrastructure, among other reasons. This gap highlights the importance of smart infrastructure and proactive investments, which Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) embodies through its world-leading systems. DEWA is the government entity responsible for the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, as well as the provision of desalinated water in Dubai. Committed to the highest standards of reliability, sustainability and efficiency, DEWA champions smart and innovative solutions to achieve net zero. In recent years, the corporation's customer base has grown significantly, with the number of accounts rising to 1,270,285 by the end of 2024, an annual increase of 4.85%. These figures reflect DEWA's commitment to meeting rising utility demands in Dubai while also enhancing service quality and emergency preparedness. DEWA is implementing strategic projects to enhance the efficiency and reliability of electricity and water networks. These include the continued expansion of transmission and distribution infrastructure, as well as initiatives to raise production capacity and advance storage and clean energy systems to ensure network stability. With a production capacity of 17,879 megawatts of electricity and 495 million imperial gallons of desalinated water per day, DEWA's state-of-the-art infrastructure meets the highest international standards. DEWA developed a smart grid strategy that relies on artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to monitor its networks and analyse 15 million data points daily, enabling immediate detection and remote repair of faults before they escalate. These systems contributed have contributed to DEWA recording the world's lowest electricity customer minutes lost (CML) per year, with an average of 0.94 minutes in 2024. Over the last 10 years, DEWA has outperformed leading utility companies in the Europe and the United States. Water distribution system losses stood at 4.5%, ranking among the lowest globally. Line losses in electricity transmission and distribution networks were 2%, compared to 6%-7% in Europe and the US. DEWA has become a global role model for energy efficiency and reliability, as well as for keeping pace with growing demand. DEWA continues to enhance its operational capabilities and develop its smart infrastructure through well-considered plans and strategic investments. These efforts keep pace with rapid growth in demand for essential services while supporting the development of Dubai's vital infrastructure in line with its sustainability vision and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050. 'We work in line with the vision of our wise leadership to provide sustainable and reliable electricity and water services, while enhancing readiness and resilience for emergencies and crises. Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Centre In 2014, DEWA launched the first phase of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Centre for water transmission at its Sustainable Building in Al Quoz. This is part of DEWA's efforts to achieve digital transformation using cutting-edge operational technology. It enables round-the-clock remote monitoring of Dubai's 2,300-kilometre water network, including transmission pipelines, pumping stations and reservoirs – a feat made possible by the installation of more than 8,500 smart devices. DEWA is currently implementing the second phase of the system to include the water distribution network, and is continuously expanding the transmission network. Proactive measures to deal with emergencies DEWA is enhancing the resilience and reliability of electricity networks in emergency situations through smart infrastructure supported by the latest Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies. These efforts include expanding the use of smart grid systems, which rely on an integrated set-up of advanced sensors, automatic controls and artificial intelligence. These technologies allow real-time monitoring of network performance and detect imbalances within a fraction of a second. DEWA's electricity transmission lines extend over 15,000 kilometres, supported by a network of smart substations managed remotely via advanced SCADA systems. This ensures stable electrical supply even in exceptional circumstances. DEWA also adopts proactive strategies to manage sudden faults, including alternative electricity supply routes to minimise downtime. Additionally, DEWA uses nanosatellites, drones and smart robots to periodically inspect overhead and underground lines, and to predict potential issues before they escalate. DEWA is also increasing the share of clean energy through the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park and the 250MW hydroelectric power plant in Hatta, which enhances network resilience, offering a sustainable source of supply during crises. Modern energy storage systems also contribute to load balancing and provide an emergency reserve that ensures service continuity. Smart Response DEWA's Smart Response service, accessible through its website and smart app, allows customers to diagnose electricity and water interruptions. It also streamlines reporting processes and reduces the time needed for technical team visits. In the event of a power outage in a home or building, DEWA advises customers to identify the affected areas and check the internal distribution board. If a circuit breaker is disconnected, a qualified technician may be required. If all breakers are on, customers can follow the Smart Response instructions on the smart app. For water interruptions, DEWA recommends that water tanks and internal connections comply with its specifications to ensure continued supply, including a tank with a 24-hour capacity. These systems should be maintained regularly to prevent blockages. The DEWA Store on the smart app lists approved maintenance companies offering exclusive discounts for DEWA customers. Guidelines and tips to ensure safe and uninterrupted electricity and water supply during rainfall are available at Community readiness is also crucial. DEWA conducts joint training exercises with government and private sector entities to simulate complex emergency scenarios, such as large-scale outages or severe weather, to ensure technical teams are prepared and response plans are in place in line with international best practice. Look: Dubai adds 10 new smart pedestrian signals at different locations
Dubai has installed smart pedestrian signals at 10 additional places in the emirate, taking the total number of sites with these signals to 27. This is the second phase of the project by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). In the first phase of the project, these signals installed in several locations around the city have proved to produce great results. The locations covered in this phase include intersections along Omar Bin Al Khattab Street, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Street, Al Satwa Street, Salah Al Din Street, Amman Street, Al Qusais Street (near labour camps), and Oud Metha Street (in front of the school zone). The signals use cutting-edge technologies to improve traffic systems, enhance road safety, and streamline pedestrian and vehicle movement. It uses intelligent thermal cameras to detect the movement of pedestrians on sidewalks and while crossing. These cameras operate around the clock, accurately detecting the movement even in low-light or night-time conditions. The system integrates with push-button devices to register actual crossing requests, enhancing signal efficiency and optimising timing control. The first-of-its-kind system in the region developed by Derq uses behaviour prediction models. The technology can activate flashing warning signs, in-road warning lights, and even traffic signal controllers in anticipation of pedestrians crossing. It effectively preempts any potential conflicts with approaching vehicles. Great results Mohammed Al Ali, Director of Intelligent Traffic Systems at RTA's Traffic and Roads Agency, said that these signals have produced a positive outcome. 'Results have shown improved safety levels at these pedestrian crossings since the signals became operational, demonstrating the system's effectiveness in mitigating risk and enhancing the overall road experience for all users,' he said. He added that the RTA selected target locations based on what they had learnt in the first phase and a multi-criteria evaluation matrix. 'Key considerations include the proximity of pedestrian crossings to each other, the rate of pedestrian-related incidents at the location, road classification including designated speed limits and the number of lanes per direction, the availability and accessibility of pedestrian bridges, and the overall road design,' he said. 'These factors collectively determine the feasibility and impact of installing a smart pedestrian signal at a specific site.'
