Askou 'not happy' with second half at Ochilview
Stephen O'Donnell's fortunate back-post finish in the 41st minute proved enough to send the Fir Park side top of their Premier Sports Cup group, but Askou felt his team were too content to sit on their lead at Ochilview.
"The first half was actually quite good," he said in a club video. "We found a high tempo at times, were dangerous also on set-pieces, should have produced some bigger chances.
"But being 1-0 up at half time, it gave us the composure and the calmness in the team that we maybe haven't had the first couple of games where we've been chasing and chasing and chasing.
"And maybe that was the reason that we slowed down a little bit in the second half, I don't know. No matter what, I'm not happy with the performance in the second half.
"We need to produce more, bigger chances in a game like that when we dominate so much."

Stenhousemuir 0, Motherwell 1: O'Donnell strike keeps Well cup hopes alive
Motherwell kept alive their hopes of progressing from Premier Sports Cup Group D with a slender win over Stenhousemuir at Ochilview. The Premiership side had a number of chances to stretch their lead, particularly in the second half after a first 45 played in torrential rain. In the end, Stephen O'Donnell's strike just before the interval was enough to separate the sides and put Motherwell on eight points, going into a last-game showdown at home to Morton on Tuesday. Stenhousemuir boss Gary Naysmith made four changes to the side that lost to Morton on Tuesday, having made seven signings on Friday. Josh Walker, Finn Robson, Peter Mendy and Ross Taylor came in for Oli Simpson, Scott McGill, Matty Aitken and Corey O'Donnell. Motherwell gaffer Jan Berthel Askou made six changes to the side that struggled past Peterhead on Tuesday. Stephen O'Donnell, Kofi Balmer, Ewan Wilson, Andy Halliday, Tawanda Maswanhise and Apostolos Stamatelopoulos came in for John Koutroumbis, Paul McGinn, Liam Gordon, Emmanuel Longelo, Elliot Watt and Eseosa Sule. Motherwell went close in seven minutes when Callum Slattery's cross from the right was well met by the head of Tawanda Maswanhise, but brilliantly clawed over the bar by Darren Jamieson. A whipped Ewan Wilson cross from the left caused havoc in the Stenny box in 13 minutes, but there were no takers. Andy Halliday tried a shot from distance in 31 minutes, but it was well over. Callum Slattery saw a 19-yard free kick punched over the bar by Jamieson in 39 minutes, but referee Lloyd Wilson awarded a goal kick, much to the bemusement of the crowd. But Motherwell took the lead two minutes later when Slattery's corner from the right was met at the back post by a side-foot finish from O'Donnell. Motherwell went close to doubling that lead in 54 minutes when Elijah Just's cross from the left took a wicked deflection off defender Greg Buchanan, but keeper Jamieson reacted well to block. The visitors should have doubled their lead in 64 minutes when Slattery's cross from the right was met with a back-post volley by sub Eseosa Sule, but Jamieson brilliant blocked. Halliday's corner from the right was met with a powerful header by Kofi Balmer that was cleared off the line by Michael Anderson in 71 minutes. Anderson should have levelled in 90 minutes when a shot came to him through a ruck of legs, but he fired past with just Connelly to beat. Motherwell's young keeper says patience has paid off as he grabs chance
Motherwell goalkeeper Matty Connelly says patience has paid off at Fir Park, and intends to grab his chance with both hands. The 22-year-old was heading back on loan to League Two newcomers East Kilbride on loan, but an injury to first-choice Motherwell shot-stopper Aston Oxborough suddenly opened up some possibilities. After Callum Ward sold a goal in the 2-2 draw at Clyde in Motherwell's Premier Sports Cup opener, Connelly was given the nodd for a 2-1 win over Peterhead on Tuesday and a 1-0 triumph at Stenhousemuir yesterday. Connelly, who wasn't really tested at Ochilview, said: 'I've been patiently waiting for my chance. I thought I did all right on my debut, and to get the chance to play again on Saturday, I could myself really lucky. 'I'm thankful to the gaffer for giving me the chance. 'I think it's a good base to make your debut, and when you're the team that's expected to win, it's just following that through. ''I was buzzing. It was a really calm game for me, no shots on goal, just kind of playing it out the back and stuff like that. 'The boys in front of me did brilliantly.' The young shot-stopper said: 'We're in a good position to qualify from the group, but Tuesday's another challenge and we'll try to get another three points and top the group. 'That's our last game, so we want the win.' Connelly has been at East Kilbride on loan for the last couple of years and played a major role last season as they won the Lowland League and the pyramid play-off against Bonnyrigg Rose. And he said: 'East Kilbride have been brilliant, the coaches – Mick Kennedy, Si Ferry, Blair Munn, Zander Cowie the goalie coach – have all been brilliant with me. 'I went back there twice and enjoyed it the first time, and set out to get promoted, and thankfully they did that. 'I would go back out there if needed. The plan when I came back in this summer was to go back out on loan, then I got the chance here to play games. 'But I'll see what happens, I do what I'm told!'
