In late April, former NBA star
Gilbert Arenas
faced every parent's worst nightmare. His son,
Alijah Arenas
, an 18-year-old basketball phenom committed to USC, was involved in a terrifying car crash while driving a Tesla Cybertruck.
The vehicle struck a tree and a fire hydrant in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley and burst into flames, leaving Alijah trapped inside.
Now, Gilbert has shared new details answering the burning question of what led to the horrific crash.
Gilbert Arenas revealed the reason behind Alijah Arenas' life-threatening accident
The crash happened around 5 a.m. on April 24. Alijah Arenas, who was behind the wheel, inhaled a large amount of smoke and had to be placed in a medically induced coma. Fortunately, he didn't suffer any broken bones.
He was released from the hospital six days later and is now recovering at home under close medical watch. But the story behind the crash has raised troubling questions about the Tesla Cybertruck's safety.
Appearing on the All The Smoke podcast, Gilbert Arenas explained what really happened. 'The car malfunctioned on him. The steering wheel went limp and ran him right into a tree,' he said, rejecting speculation that his son had fallen asleep at the wheel.

Arenas added that Alijah was on the phone with 911 for nearly 10 minutes while the vehicle burned around him. 'He couldn't break the window,' he said. 'Physically, he said he was trying to kick the window in and couldn't. If you're a parent and your teen has this car, you might want to put a hammer in that joint.' The Tesla Cybertruck's shatter-resistant, bulletproof glass, marketed as a selling point, made it nearly impossible for Alijah to escape.
According to a family statement shared by TMZ, the rescue effort came down to sheer determination and luck. One good Samaritan recounted hearing banging from inside the car: 'I couldn't see anything because the smoke was so thick.' Eventually, a slight crack in one of the windows allowed bystanders to pry it open and pull Alijah out. 'The car was on fire. We just knew we had to get him out.'
Gilbert revealed how emotional it was to see his son alive after the ordeal.
'Once he got his personality back… our jokes came back and I'm like, 'Damn boy, you almost went extra crispy on me man.'' He said he used the moment to remind Alijah of how rare second chances are. 'You're a lucky one to see this,' he told him. 'Most people don't get to see the flowers and how everyone reacts when something happens… You can't take this sh-t for granted.
'
Since the crash, Tesla has not issued a public statement about the alleged malfunction. Meanwhile, the Arenas family is focused on Alijah's recovery.

Japan's Nikkei ends lower on worries about US-China trade tension, stronger yen
Japan's Nikkei share average ended lower on Monday amid worries over trade tensions between the U.S. and China, and a stronger yen, which hurt automakers. The Nikkei fell 1.3% to 37,470.67 and the broader Topix slipped 0.87% to 2777.29. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If You Eat Ginger Everyday for 1 Month This is What Happens Tips and Tricks Undo "Investors were worried about rising uncertainties about trade issues," said Shoichi Arisawa, general manager of investment research at IwaiCosmo Securities. "Optimism over the tariff policy, which pushed the Nikkei over the psychologically important level of 38,000 last week, has vanished." U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday accused China of breaching a trade agreement with the U.S. and issued a new veiled threat to get tougher with Beijing. Live Events Trump later said he would speak to China's President Xi Jinping and hopefully work out their differences on trade and tariffs. The yen strengthened on Monday, rising 0.6% to 143.15 against the U.S. dollar, following the declines of U.S. Treasury yields on Friday. This also weighed on Japanese stocks, said Arisawa. A stronger yen typically weighs on exporter shares by reducing the value of overseas earnings when converted back into Japanese currency. "One market-moving cue would be the G7 leaders' summit to be held in Canada later this month, where we may see the fate of trade talks between Japan and the U.S.," said Arisawa. Automakers fell, with Toyota Motor and Honda Motor down 2.82% and 2.11%, respectively. Chip-related shares declined, with Advantest and Tokyo Electron slipping 3.76% and 1.72%, respectively. All but five of the Tokyo Stock Exchange's 33 industry sub-indexes fell, with the auto sector and tyre makers losing 2% and 3.22%, respectively, to become the worst performers. T&D Holdings ended 4% higher after a report said an activist investor built a 4-5% stake in the insurer group.

Maruti Suzuki says no immediate hit from China curbs on magnet exports
Maruti Suzuki , India's top carmaker, said on Monday there is no immediate impact on its car production from China's export curbs on rare earth magnets, a key component in electric and gasoline cars. Indian car and component manufacturers told Prime Minister Narendra Modi's officials last week that auto production could grind to a halt within days due to Chinese export restrictions on rare earth magnets, Reuters reported. The companies want the government to lobby Beijing to relax the curbs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Elegant New Scooters For Seniors In 2024: The Prices May Surprise You Mobility Scooter | Search Ads Learn More Undo
