Mamelodi Sundowns face questions after another continental setback in CAF Champions League

Mamelodi Sundowns' dream crumbled beneath the ancient skies of Cairo, as they fell just short of reaching the CAF Champions League final — edged out 3-2 by first-time finalists, Pyramids FC, in a battle worthy of the pharaohs on Sunday.
Once again, Sundowns' league brilliance faded beneath the continental lights, as their dream of conquering Africa's premier crown slipped away. The wait stretches on — and when they return to the grand stage, it will mark close to a decade since that elusive triumph last felt within reach.
What began with the promise of Lucas Ribeiro Costa's early strike slowly descended into shadows — and now, we reflect on the three defining moments that shaped the two-legged finale heartbreak for the Brazilians.
Moving on from Themba Zwane?
Mamelodi Sundowns' captain did not feature in either leg of the tie, and with his experience and creativity — especially against a very stubborn Pyramids defence — his presence was clearly needed, but never materialised.
The 35-year-old had missed much of the season due to an Achilles injury, but after making his return more than a month before this semi-final, many expected his quality would see him earn minutes in both legs.
His absence in what were arguably the club's two most important matches of the season might have gone unspoken, but it strongly suggests he may have slipped down the pecking order.
Where to for Miguel Cardoso?
The Portuguese coach has now lost back-to-back CAF Champions League semi-finals, the latest being a 1-0 aggregate defeat to Al Ahly last season while in charge of Espérance de Tunis. Hired by his current club with the primary aim of ending a nine-year continental title drought, Cardoso once again fell short with the trophy within reach.
It would be illogical to part ways with him immediately, especially with the FIFA Club World Cup just days away. However, with only the league title to show for the season — and a disappointing 2-1 loss to Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup final — his future could hinge on what unfolds in the United States in the coming fortnight.
Expectations may be modest at the Club World Cup given the level of competition, but with the talent available in the squad, advancing from the group stage would be seen as a positive result — and perhaps crucial for Cardoso's job security.
A heavy price to pay
The Brazilians ultimately paid the price for not taking full control of the first leg at home. Their 1-1 draw, with the equaliser coming in added time, proved costly as Pyramids made the most of their home advantage and secured a place in continental history.
Heading into the second leg, the expectation was for the South African side to come out strong and take control of the game, especially since they needed at least one goal to stay in contention. However, for most of the match, that urgency was missing.
It wasn't until Pyramids scored their second goal that Cardoso's team began to show the intensity and intent that was needed from the start. By then, it was too late — and it became clear that their tactical approach across both legs had fallen short.

Why in-demand Fawaaz Basadien should steer clear of Kaizer Chiefs

Basadien's possible future move Stellenbosch FC defender and stand-in Bafana Bafana captain Fawaaz Basadien is in demand after an impressive season for his club. Photo: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix Image: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix Fawaaz Basadien is the man of the moment in South African football currently. The left back, arguably the best in the country, was named Stellenbosch FC's Player of the Season recently after some impressive form for the Cape Winelands side. The cherry on top for Basadien was the 27-year-old being named as the stand-in skipper for Bafana Bafana, as Ronwen Williams is away at the FIFA Club World Cup. It's been a good year for the former Moroka Swallows man. Naturally, the monied clubs in Gauteng have been lining up and are interested in his services. According to reports, Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, and Orlando Pirates all want to sign him. Not many local footballers get a chance to pick between one of the big three. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad Loading Addressing those rumours ahead of Bafana's game against Tanzania on Friday, the defender said: 'Obviously, all the rumours and stuff are nice to have as a player. But my main focus is to use whatever opportunity I get to play and keep doing what I do and keep improving every day. 'So, whatever happens in the background is just part of the rumours that have been created. But for me, in football, there comes a time where you want to achieve greater things – maybe play for the so-called big teams or make big moves.' So, with that being said, where should he go next? For many, the logical answer would be Mamelodi Sundowns. At Chloorkop, Basadien would land in a very stable situation, where every player knows what is expected of them and clear goals are set. While Sundowns supporters are passionate about their club, they're not as vocal and opinionated as those from other clubs. If he struggles to settle in, they would be patient enough to give him time to get used to his new surroundings. The same can't be said about fans of the Soweto clubs. While Pirates are more settled as a football operation, Chiefs are not. The club have just finished outside of the top half for a second successive season and are in desperate need of open-heart surgery. Kaizer Chiefs would be completely the wrong move for a player who is starting to make a name for himself on the international stage. And we all know how quickly Chiefs supporters can turn on players who don't hit the ground running. Basadien must think carefully now. He's not a youngster anymore, and this next move could define the rest of his career. A switch to Sundowns makes sense if he wants silverware and structure, but he'll have to fight for his place every week. Pirates might offer him that balance – game time and prestige – while Chiefs, honestly, look like a gamble right now. Whatever he chooses, the ball's at his feet. And in South African football, that's a rare kind of power. Bafana coach Hugo Broos happy with performances of newcomers in draw with Tanzania

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos was satisfied with the performances of some of the new players during the 0-0 international friendly draw with Tanzania at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday. Broos handed out a number of debuts in his new-look Bafana side and he was happy with the way they accounted for themselves despite playing together for the first time for the national team. In what turned out to be a dull match played under cold conditions in Polokwane, Broos gave starting opportunities to Ricardo Goss, Deano van Rooyen, Thabo Moloisane, Kulumane Ndamane, Fawaaz Basadien, Simphiwe Selepe, Tshepang Moremi and Ashley Cupido. Some of the these players ordinarily would not have been considered but they benefited from the absence of their Mamelodi Sundowns counterparts who leave at the weekend for the Fifa Club World Cup in the US. 'After every game we give jerseys to players who were earning their first cap and we gave about eight after this match,' he said as he reflected on the share of the spoils with the Taifa Stars.
