How Zoe Saldaña helped shape Pixar's upcoming film ‘Elio'

Yahoo4 days ago

The filmmakers behind Pixar's latest animated movie, Elio, say Zoe Saldaña was the perfect choice to join the voice cast — and they had several reasons why.
'We're grateful to have Zoe joining our project. She's the queen of sci-fi,' says codirector Madeline Sharafian, referring to Saldaña's iconic roles in Avatar, Star Trek, and Guardians of the Galaxy. 'We wanted this film to feel like Pixar's love letter to sci-fi.'

On Tuesday, Pixar released a new trailer for the film featuring Saldaña in action as aunt Olga. The film follows an 11-year-old boy (voiced by Yonas Kibreab) who is captivated by space and dreams of being abducted by aliens. After the loss of his parents, he goes to live with his aunt Olga, a highly respected U.S. Air Force major. As Olga adjusts to her new role as guardian, she must navigate the demands of military life while caring for a grieving, imaginative child.
'Zoe brought a lot of military know-how. She's played a lot of strong military characters in the past,' Sharafian tells Gold Derby. 'She was able to bring that balance of warmth when Olga is trying to step into this parental role, but also when Olga is in professional mode and she turns it on — it's a really difficult needle to thread for this character who needs to be a little bit of an unlikeable parent.'
Sharafian adds that Saldaña, who won an Oscar earlier this year for her role in Emilia Pérez, added a performance that was essential in grounding the character with emotional realism.
'She did such a gorgeous job of giving Olga vulnerability,' says Sharafian. 'Underneath everything you can tell there is love for Elio — even if she is having these arguments. I don't think we would be successful without her.'
Pixar
Codirector Domee Shi, who previously helmed Pixar's Turning Red also highlighted how Saldaña's cultural background played a pivotal role in shaping the film's authenticity.
'She has endless range. She can do comedy. She can do drama. She's also incredibly smart and thoughtful,' Shi tells Gold Derby. 'We leaned on her a lot in flushing out Olga's Dominican background. Lines and expression — she was able to add an authentic Dominican flavor to it that just made Olga feel more real. I am so grateful for that.'
The filmmakers' commitment to authenticity extended beyond dialogue. Saldaña collaborated closely with the creative team to add personal touches to Olga's world—details that reflect the characters' multicultural roots.
'Elio [has] both Dominican and Mexican side represented in the [his] house,' Sharafian says. 'There's a moment in the film where Olga hears a song on the radio that she really likes, and we did ask Zoe for input on that — like, which Dominican song would Olga like, would you like? There is a moment in the film where Olga says, 'Oh, I love that song.' And Zoe really does love that song.'
Elio hits theaters June 20.

James Blunt Reveals What His Hit 'You're Beautiful' Is 'Really' About as Song Turns 20

James Blunt is celebrating the 20th anniversary of "You're Beautiful" The singer is looking back on the song about an ex-girlfriend and how it changed the trajectory of his career "You're Beautiful" hit number one across 10 countries in an explosive release James Blunt is celebrating 20 years of "You're Beautiful." Marking the milestone on X, Blunt expressed his gratitude at the staying power of the hit song, which was released on May 30, 2005. He wrote, "20 years ago today, I released a song that bought me this house. Whoever thought a song about being high as a kite on drugs, stalking someone else's girlfriend would resonate quite so much? Thank you. You guys are beautiful." "You're Beautiful" was the third single released from Blunt's album, Back to Bedlam, first released in October 2004. It ended up hitting number one across 10 countries in an explosive release that made it one of the songs of the year. Blunt has never commented on who, in particular, the song is about, though there were rumors after the song's release that it was about Dixie Chassay. At the time, Chassay was best known as part of the casting team for Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban, learning under the tutelage of casting director Jina Jay. It was mentioned in a 2006 profile of Chassay that the song is about her, though she has never commented on it directly. The singer did give some insight into how the song came to be in a 2020 essay for The Guardian. "One day I was on the underground in London and saw an ex-girlfriend with her new boyfriend. Our eyes met, but we just walked past each other, and I went home and wrote the words to 'You're Beautiful' in two minutes," he wrote. "I went to see my songwriter friend Sacha Skarbek in Los Angeles, and, with Amanda Ghost as a co-writer, we finished the song. It's always been portrayed as romantic, but it's actually a bit creepy. It's about a guy (me) who's high and stalking someone else's girlfriend on the subway. But everyone has those moments where you wonder: 'What if I'd said something?' " Blunt recalls playing the song at SXSW, the beginning of a huge shift that came when Linda Perry expressed interest in signing him. "The label asked me to remove the words 'f— high' from 'You're Beautiful,'" he recalls."I tried 'particularly high,' 'especially high!' Eventually I sang 'flying high' on the radio edit but wanted the released version left as it was. I told them, 'I was f— high!' " Blunt added, "The song has a false start. I sing 'my life is brilliant' twice, which is my little joke, but I think in my elated state, from whatever concoction I might have taken at the time, life did seem really brilliant. The tube certainly looked very colorful." Looking back with the knowledge that it propelled his career as a singer and songwriter, Blunt admitted, "I had no idea the song would be such a big hit, and it scared me at first." "I thought I'd just be a musician putting out music. The song [released in 2004] became so ubiquitous that it started to irritate people, but I'm still proud of it and I love my job. I sang it at Elton John and David Furnish's civil ceremony and I'm about to start my sixth world tour. Without 'You're Beautiful,' it'd be a tour of north London." Gold Derby's for May 30, 2025. The actress, who play Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan on the seminal television series M*A*S*H died on Friday at age of 87 at her home in New York City. Swit won two Emmy Awards for the role and was nominated 10 times in all for the series. She appeared in every season of M*A*S*H and 239 episodes in total, the second most of any actor, behind Alan Alda. The composer joined The Simpsons during its second season in 1990, writing some of its best known songs and parodies until 2017, when he was fired due to cost-saving measures, resulting in an uproar from fans. Almost five years after the pop mega-star announced plans to re-record her first six studio albums due to a dispute with the right's holders, Taylor Swift has acquired the masters to her back catalog. The singer-songwriter announced on her socials that the saga that led to her (Taylor's Version) releases had come to a close. "All of the music I've ever made… now belongs… to me," she wrote in a letter posted to her official site. The rights were most recently in the hands of Shamrock Capital, who have reportedly sold them to Swift for an undisclosed nine-figure sum, according to Variety. Months after her first Academy Award nomination, the Wicked star has found her next film project. The singer-turned-blockbuster actress has signed onto the fourth film in the Meet the Parents series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Grande joins Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro, who are reprising their roles as Greg Focker and Jack "Talk Thai" Byrnes respectively. Also set for a return are Teri Polo and Blythe Danner. John Hamburg, who cowrote the first three films, will write and direct the fourth. Hulu has announced when Hank Hill and the gang will be returning for Season 14. King of the Hill is coming back on August 4, after 15 years off the air. The streamer also dropped a first look, a sneak peek at the opening credits, and an official description of the new batch of episodes. "After years working a propane job in Saudi Arabia to earn their retirement nest egg, Hank and Peggy Hill return to a changed Arlen, Texas to reconnect with old friends Dale, Boomhauer and Bill. Meanwhile, Bobby is living his dream as a chef in Dallas and enjoying his 20s with his former classmates Connie, Joseph and Chane." For those who didn't partake in one last reckoning over the weekend, Paramount has released a clip from the final (?) Mission: Impossible movie.
