Ballon d'Or winner reveals he is open to reuniting with Carlo Ancelotti and becoming Brazil assistant manager

Daily Mail19-05-2025
A Ballon d'Or winner has revealed that he is open to being the new assistant coach for Brazil.
The former Brazil star has previous experience of working under Carlo Ancelotti.
Ancelotti, whose time in charge of Real Madrid is drawing to a close, will officially take charge of Brazil next week.
It will be the first international job of Ancelotti's trophy-laden career.
Ancelotti will be tasked with attempting to guide Brazil to glory at the 2026 World Cup.
There have been suggestions that he could ask a high-profile former player to be part of his coaching staff.
Kaka, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2007, admitted that he is interested in potentially joining the Brazil coaching staff.
During his time as a player, Kaka made 92 appearances and scored 29 goals on the international stage. He was a fringe member of the Brazil squad that won the 2002 World Cup, while he won the Confederations Cup in 2005 and 2009.
The 43-year-old believes he possesses experience which could be of great use to Brazil.
Kaka told Caze TV: 'If the team thinks I can help in some way, I think that, at this moment, I am ready. I am prepared.
'I stopped playing in 2017. Since then, I have wanted to prepare myself. I took sports business courses at Harvard in the United States, I took a coaching course at the CBF, I have experience with the national team, the World Cup. If the opportunity arises, I am ready to return to serve the Brazilian national team.'
Kaka previously played under Ancelotti at AC Milan between 2003 and 2009, winning the Serie A title in 2003-04 and the Champions League in 2006-07.
In total, Kaka played under Ancelotti 270 times - the most of any coach in his career.
By taking charge of Brazil Ancelotti is succeeding Dorival Junior, who was sacked in March after just over a year in charge.
Brazil were knocked out of the World Cup at the quarter-finals stage in the last two tournaments.
They have won the World Cup five times - more than any other nation.

Gaffney sinks Derry as Rovers stretch lead at top

Derry City's League of Ireland hopes suffered a major blow as Shamrock Rovers took a significant step towards regaining the title with a 2-0 win at Tallaght Stadium. Going into Sunday's game - which was rescheduled from Friday because of Rovers' European campaign - the Candystripes aimed to keep the pressure on the leaders after second-placed Bohemians fell to a home defeat by Drogheda United on Friday after a promising first-half showing, Derry succumbed to a double from Rovers frontman Rory Gaffney, who struck in the 47th and 65th minutes to push Stephen Bradley's side 10 points clear of Bohs at the - who had defender Alex Bannon sent off late on - are a point further adrift in third and are now winless in their past 10 games against Rovers, stretching back to March significantly, a ninth defeat of the season seriously dampens Tiernan Lynch's hopes of delivering Derry's first title since 1997 in his first season in a frustrating night for the Foylesiders, they failed to capitalise while on top. After a quiet opening half, Rovers quickly took control after the restart with Gaffney supplying the finishing touch for the opener after fine work from Joshua Honohan down the left wing. With Derry rattled, Rovers nearly doubled their lead moments later when Connor Malley - who replaced McEneff at the break - smashed Brian Maher's crossbar. The cushion Rovers craved, however, was secured by Gaffney, who turned sharply on to his left foot to beat Bannon before rifling a shot beyond Maher. Howe slams Alexander Isak's ‘poor' attitude and warns AWOL Newcastle star ‘you have to earn the right to train with us'

ALEXANDER ISAK must earn the right to train with Newcastle's first team again, claims boss Eddie Howe. The Swede, 25, missed the Toon's Asia tour amid strong interest from Liverpool. 3 3 Newcastle initially put Isak's absence down to a minor thigh injury. But it later emerged that the prolific striker wanted to leave St James' Park. Isak trained alone at former club Real Sociedad earlier this week, but is believed to have returned to Tyneside over the weekend after Liverpool had a £110million bid rejected. The forward has not been involved since being sent home from Glasgow ahead of the Toon's clash with Celtic on July 19, amid transfer speculation. Following his side's 1-1 draw with Tottenham in South Korea, boss Howe was asked if Isak will return to team training next week. The Magpies boss said: "You have to earn the right to train with us. "We are Newcastle United. The player has a responsibility here to be part of a team and part of a squad - you have to act in the right way. So that is also at play here. "We will make sure that any player does that to earn the right to train with the group. "No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal." According to the Mail, Liverpool will likely return with a second bid for Isak when Newcastle close in on a replacement. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe gives update on Alexander Isak's Liverpool transfer The Toon are competing with Manchester United for the signature of RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko, having launched a £70m bid for the Slovenian earlier this week. Howe, 47, also admitted that he has not spoken to Isak while away in Asia. Addressing Isak's future, the Newcastle boss said: "Of course I'd like him to be (at training next week), but whether he will I don't know at this moment in time. "We have been here with the time difference, preparing for training and for games. Other people have been dealing with that situation back at home." After jetting back from Asia today, Newcastle will return to action on Friday night, when they host Espanyol at St James' Park. On Saturday they will then welcome Atletico Madrid to Tyneside, and it remains to be seen whether Isak will feature in either game. 3 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW In addition to Sesko, Newcastle have also been linked with Brentford star Yoane Wissa. The Bees ace is keen on a move to St James' Park, with boss Keith Andrews saying earlier today: "The situation is that he is training at the training ground. "It's probably public knowledge at this stage that he left our training camp in Lisbon. That was probably the right decision for all parties. We had to support him in what is a difficult time for him. "I think we have to remember that it's not just about being a footballer, it's the person and the human being first. "Again, it's public knowledge that there is some interest in Wiss. We have to respect that and respect him. "I have got a really good relationship with Yoane from last season and that's still the case now, but obviously it's not ideal."
