MHC boss demands hunger and heart from Tigers at Nations Cup

KUALA LUMPUR: The Speedy Tigers must play without fear and perform at their peak to make an impact at the Nations Cup, which begins on June 15 at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil, said Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal.
"Fans want to be associated with winners, and to achieve that, the national players need to play with spirit," said Subahan during a kit sponsorship ceremony in Bukit Jalil on Monday.
"The players must do well to build momentum, as qualifying for next year's World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics are the main targets."
Subahan pointed to Pakistan as an example of a team that performs well in tournaments despite limited resources.
"This is the kind of spirit we want from our national players. We've given them everything, and now they need to show extraordinary hunger to outperform the other teams in the tournament," he said.
"If the national players want their welfare to be looked after, they need to perform at their best in the Nations Cup so that the government and sponsors will be more inclined to support them.
"The national team had solid preparations, playing friendly matches against Australia and going on a tour of South Korea, where they took on their national team in five matches."
A semi-final target has been set for world No. 13 Malaysia, who are the third-highest ranked team in the Nations Cup.
Malaysia are in Group B with world No. 12 New Zealand, Pakistan (No. 15) and Japan (No. 16).
Group A features world No. 9 France, South Africa (No. 11), South Korea (No. 14) and Wales (No. 18)
The champions will earn a place in the 2025-26 FIH Pro League.

Sports critic slams national hockey coach Sarjit

KUALA LUMPUR: National hockey coach Sarjit Singh's revelation about the state of his team has left many people shocked. Sarjit said at a press conference on Wednesday that the national team are only 80 per cent fit for the Asia Cup in Bihar, India from Aug 29 to Sept 7. The winners of the Asia Cup will qualify for the 2026 World Cup. But it already appears that the Speedy Tigers are too slow to chase for that ticket. Sports analyst Datuk Dr Pekan Ramli said fitness is a very important aspect in sports and the national team need to be 100 per cent fit to be able to challenge others at the Asia Cup. "It's really shocking to know that the national hockey team are only 80 per cent fit for the Asia Cup. How can they give their best when they are not fully fit? "Sarjit has been given a free hand and has been in charge of the national team for 16 months. Until now his team are only 80 per cent fit. "As a coach, what has Sarjit been doing since last March? He should have come up with a plan and should have got the services of a fitness instructor since last year to improve the players' fitness. "He knows very well from the beginning of this year that the Asia Cup is a crucial tournament which offers a place in the World Cup and the team should have been in top form physically and mentally for the Asia Cup. "Sarjit is not handling a school team but in charge of the Malaysia team who are ranked 12th in the world and he is fully responsible for the team. "When there's no Key Performance Index (KPI) set for a coach, this happens. He gives excuses after excuses after every tournament and gets away with it. "He has given an excuse before the Asia Cup starts, so if the team don't achieve their target, he can escape again. "As a national chief coach, he must do his job professionally. And if he cannot achieve the target set for him his services should be terminated," said Pekan. Malaysia are drawn in Group B of the Asia Cup with defending champions South Korea, Bangladesh and Taiwan. Group A comprises India, Japan, China and Kazakhstan. Under Sarjit, the national team have not achieved any podium finish in their last four tournaments.

Basketball to start two days before LA28 opening ceremony

BASKETBALL at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will begin two days before the opening ceremony takes place on July 14, the sport's governing body (FIBA) said on Wednesday. 'This adjustment allows the quarter-finals to be played over two days and will also ensure that no game will start earlier than 12:00 PM, enhancing the overall experience for players, teams, fans and broadcasters,' FIBA said after a meeting of its Executive Committee. According to a preliminary version of the competition schedule released by organizers of the 2028 Olympics last month, the basketball medal matches will be held on July 29 and 30. The basketball competition will take place at the Inglewood Dome, with the United States looking to defend their men's and women's titles. The 3x3 basketball competitions is scheduled to start after the opening ceremony. A number of other sports like cricket, soccer, handball, field hockey and rugby sevens are also scheduled to begin before the opening ceremony. - Reuters
