Woman Says Father Came To India For His Favourite Fruit, Died In Crash

The grieving family of Ramesh Chand Patel, a British national who lost his life in the tragic Ahmedabad plane crash, arrived in India on Friday to take his body home and pay their final respects.
Patel, a regular visitor to Gujarat and deeply connected to the country of his roots, had come to India for just nine days. His daughter, Priti Pandya, speaking with ANI, recalled the simple, heartfelt reason behind his short visit.
"He came here last Tuesday--that is the 4th of June--just for 9 days. He just wants to come to eat the Jambura fruit. He didn't come back home," she said, her voice heavy with grief.
This was a trip like many before it, yet unlike any other. "He comes every year to India. He loves India. He has a house in Gujarat. He and my mother open the house and come here for 6 weeks. Have a tiffin service and enjoy there. This time he just came to enjoy the fruit," she added.
When asked about her last conversation with her father, Pandya expressed regret. "I didn't. This is the first trip where I have spoken to him 3-4 times within a week. But when he video called me on Tuesday, I was working and I thought I would call him back, but I was never able to because I just got busy with work."
"He wanted to come here. He loved this country. He died here, it was meant to be," he added.
On the reported compensation of Rs 1 crore per passenger, who was killed, being offered by Air India, Pandya said, 'The compensation is not going to bring him back. Money is not going to replace a life. Even yesterday, when we were trying to get our booking to come here, Air India was an option, and I said I am not coming on Air India. We can't lose 5 of us who have travelled to come here. We have left our children. Our children are by themselves at home.

"Thursday morning, he rang me and then he said everything is okay. I also messaged him on both his phones, saying, 'I hope everything is okay. All your belongings are fine and safe journey.' He said, I won't ring you again. Everything is fine. Just relax. Don't worry about it. He still rang me again and said I am on the plane safely. It's on time. I said Okay, Dad, safe journey. See you in the evening."
Holding back tears, she added how she had been preparing for his arrival, calling in his favourite food: "The day before, because I knew he was coming, I called his favourite food. He was looking forward to eating fish and chips as well."
She also recalled trying to dissuade him from taking this short trip. "He was saying to us that I am going. I said, Dad, it's too hot to go. Don't go. Mum didn't want him to go, and then he asked Mum, Could I go? I want to go. I told him not to go, it's hot. He said, No, I want to go and then I said Okay, go, fulfil your wish for what you want to eat. I don't know, he didn't come back."
On the compensation issue, her heartbreak was clear: "I give you the money, give my dad. That's what I am going to say. But no one is going to give Dad."
"Our children are on their own. They said, don't worry, go. Just bring Dada back."

Air India Express Kolkata-Hindon flight delayed due to
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 15 (ANI): Air India Express, a subsidiary of Air India, on Sunday confirmed that its flight from Kolkata to Uttar Pradesh's Hindon was delayed on Sunday after the aircraft developed a 'snag' An Air India Express spokesperson told ANI, 'Our Kolkata - Hindon flight operated, with a delay, due to a snag on the originally assigned aircraft. Guests were offered complimentary rescheduling or cancellation with a full refund. We regret the inconvenience.' The airline did not specify the nature of the technical problem but ensured the flight operated after necessary arrangements were made. Meanwhile, following a directive from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) mandating enhanced safety checks on Air India's Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 fleet, the airline on Saturday stated that inspections on nine out of its 33 Dreamliner aircraft had been completed. The remaining 24 aircraft are on track to be inspected within the timeline provided by the civil aviation regulator. In a post on X, an Air India spokesperson stated that the safety inspections are being conducted as the 787 fleet returns to India, with each aircraft undergoing thorough evaluations before being cleared for its next operation. The move came following the tragic crash of the London-bound AI171 flight that rammed into a doctors' hostel of BJ Medical College in the Meghani Nagar area in Gujarat's Ahmedabad seconds after it took off from the Sardar Vallabhai Patel International Airport on Thursday. The DGCA on Friday directed Air India to immediately carry out the additional maintenance actions on its B787-8/9 aircraft equipped with Genx engines in coordination with the concerned regional DGCA offices. 'Air India is in the process of completing the one-time safety checks directed by the Indian aviation regulator, DGCA. These checks are being carried out on the Boeing 787 fleet as they return to India, before being cleared for their next operations. Air India has completed such checks on nine of the Boeing 787 aircraft and are on track to complete this process for the remaining 24 aircraft within the timeline provided by the regulator,' Air India stated. Acknowledging potential disruptions, Air India warned that some checks might lead to increased turnaround times and possible delays, particularly on long-haul routes to airports with operating curfews. The airline has also offered e-funds on cancellations or complimentary rescheduling for those impacted by the disruptions. 'Some of these checks could lead to higher turnaround times and potential delays on certain long-haul routes, especially those to airports with operating curfews. Customers will be duly notified about any customers affected by this disruption, refunds on cancellation or complimentary rescheduling are being offered to those who opt for it,' the airline added. As per the directive, Air India has been asked to conduct a few one-time checks before the departure of flights from India starting Sunday. The tests include inspection of Fuel Parameter Monitoring and associated system checks; inspection of cabin air compressor and associated systems; Electronic Engine Control System Test; Engine Fuel Driven Actuator-Operational Test and oil system check; serviceability check of Hydraulic system; and Review of Take-off parameters. Besides, Air India has been asked to introduce 'Flight Control Inspection' in transit inspection till further notice. Further, power assurance checks must be carried out within two weeks. DGCA has also asked the Tata Group-owned airline to close maintenance actions as soon as possible, based on the review of repetitive snags on B787-8/9 aircraft during the last 15 days. BCCI Trims Daily Allowances For Staff, Streamlines Travel Policy In Big Move
The daily allowances of the BCCI staff across departments, which have not been paid since January, will finally be released following the streamlining of the domestic 'tournament allowance policy' by the board's top brass. As per the existing BCCI travel policy, the employees are paid per diem of Rs 15,000 for short-term travel (up to four days) and Rs 10,000 for long travel usually relating to the Indian Premier League (IPL), Women's Premier League (WPL) and ICC events hosted by India. A one time incidental allowance during the travel is Rs 7500. According to the revised policy, the incidental allowance component has been removed and employees will now be paid a flat Rs 10,000 per day for their time on the road. The IPL window is slightly longer than two months while ICC events also last at least a month. A BCCI source told PTI that after tax deduction at source, the per day allowance comes to Rs 6500. As the policy was going to be revised, the BCCI staff including the finance, operations and media department have not been paid their daily allowances for the IPL and WPL but now that the policy has been formulated, their dues should be cleared soon. "A clear cut policy was needed in terms of allowances as some employees were claiming allowances even when they were operating out of the Mumbai headquarters during tournaments. Now that it has been devised, the dues will be cleared soon," added the source. For more clarity, an employee who is travelling for the whole of 70-day IPL would be eligible for a daily allowance of Rs 10,000 with the total claiming amounting to Rs 7 lakh. For someone who has limited travel during the IPL would be eligible to claim only 60 percent of the 70-day allowance and someone who is not travelling at all can claim 40 percent of the amount accrued for 70 days. As far as foreign travel is concerned, most BCCI employees are paid USD 300 per day. On the other hand, the honorary office-bearers including president, secretary, treasurer, vice-president and joint secretary, are entitled to a daily allowance of USD 1000 on foreign tours. They are also paid Rs 40000 for a one day meeting within India and Rs 30000 per day for a multi-day domestic work trip.
