What is the U.S. Women's Open playoff format? (It's the same for the men)
What happens if things are still tied up at the end of 72 holes at the 2025 U.S. Women's Open? Glad you asked.
The USGA uses a two-hole aggregate playoff format if there are any ties after 72 holes. If there are still golfers tied after the two holes, the format flips to sudden death until a winner is determined. The USGA went to this format for the Women's Open in 2018.
The previous format was a three- or four-hole aggregate, used from 2007 to 2017. Priot to that, the Women's Open playoff was 18 holes held the day after the final round.
When was the last playoff at the U.S. Women's Open?
In 2018, the first year of the current playoff format, Ariya Jutanugarn won in a playoff at Shoal Creek. There has not been a playoff since.
U.S. Women's Open playoff history
2018 - Ariya Jutanugarn, Shoal Creek
2016 - Brittany Lang, CordeValle
2011 - So Yeon Ryu, The Broadmoor
2006 - Annika Sorenstam, Newport Country Club
2003 - Hilary Lunke, Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club
1998 - Seri Pak, Blackwolf Run
1992 - Patty Sheehan, Oakmont Country Club
1987 - Laura Davies, Plainfield Country Club
1976 - JoAnne Gunderson Carner, Rolling Green Golf Club
1964 - Mickey Wright, San Diego Country Club
1956 - Kathy Cornelius, Northland Country Club
1953 - Betsy Rawls, Country Club of Rochester
Is the U.S. Women's Open playoff the same as the U.S. Open?
Yes, it is. In 2018, the USGA went to the current playoff format for both championships. The two-hole aggregate followed by sudden death is also used for both of the Senior U.S. Opens.

US Open mixed doubles tournament set, with Alcaraz-Raducanu to face the No. 1 seeds

NEW YORK (AP) — Jannik Sinner has a new partner for the U.S. Open mixed doubles tournament, where Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz will face the No. 1-seeded team in the first round. The remainder of the 16-team field was completed Sunday and the draw was conducted ahead of the two-day event that begins Tuesday and pays $1 million to the winning team. The top-ranked Sinner will now play with 10-time women's doubles major champion Katerina Siniakova. He had been scheduled to team with Emma Navarro, before she withdrew to play in the women's tournament in Monterrey, Mexico, next week. The other teams added to the event Sunday are two-time U.S. Open women's champion Naomi Osaka and Gael Monfils, Karolina Muchova and Andrey Rublev, and Caty McNally and Lorenzo Musetti. Musetti had been scheduled to play with fellow Italian Jasmine Paolini, but she is playing Iga Swiatek in the Cincinnati final Monday and withdrew. Swiatek remains in the field with partner Casper Ruud. Sinner and the second-ranked Alcaraz face off in the men's final and will have a quick turnaround to their doubles openers in New York. Alcaraz and Raducanu, both past U.S. Open singles champions, face the team of Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper, who drew the No. 1 seed based on the lowest combined singles rankings. Sinner and Siniakova, who were given one of the eight wild cards, will open against the team of Alexander Zverev and Belinda Bencic. The remaining first-round matchups: Olga Danilovic and Novak Djokovic vs. Mirra Andreeva and Daniil Medvedev; No. 3 Swiatek and Ruud vs. Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe; Osaka and Monfils vs. McNally and Musetti; Taylor Townsend and Ben Shelton vs. No. 4 Amanda Anisimova and Holger Rune; Venus Williams and Reilly Opelka vs. Muchova and Rublev; and No. 2 Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz vs. Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori. Errani and Vavassori are the defending U.S. Open champions and the only traditional doubles team in the field. The first and second rounds will be played Tuesday beginning at 11 a.m. The semifinals and final are Wednesday night. ___ AP tennis:

Scottie Scheffler leads 6 qualifiers for US Ryder Cup team

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Bryson DeChambeau is returning to the Ryder Cup for the first time since 2021 as none of the Americans moved past him in the standings Sunday in the final week of qualifying for the six automatic spots on the U.S. team. DeChambeau will be the second LIV Golf player in as many Ryder Cups for the Americans, following Brooks Koepka as a captain's pick in 2023. U.S. captain Keegan Bradley had indicated DeChambeau was going to be on the team either way. The U.S. Open champion a year ago, he earned big points by playing in the last group with Rory McIlroy at the Masters, where DeChambeau tied for fifth, and finishing as a runner-up in the PGA Championship five shots behind Scottie Scheffler. DeChambeau wound up at No. 6 in the standings. Harris English moved past him with his tie for 12th in the BMW Championship to finish at No. 5, qualifying for his first team on his own. English was a captain's pick for the 2021 matches at Whistling Straits. The leading six players for the Americans were Scheffler, J.J. Spaun, Xander Schauffele, Russell Henley, English and DeChambeau. All those spots — except for DeChambeau — were practically set going into the final qualifying event. Justin Thomas would have needed to finish around the top 10 to supplant DeChambeau. Instead, he will need to rely on a captain's pick for the second straight Ryder Cup. The Ryder Cup is Sept. 26-28 at Bethpage Black. Bradley will announce six captain's picks on Aug. 27, the Wednesday after next week's Tour Championship. 'Most years it seems very obvious,' Scheffler said of the U.S. team. 'Once we continue to keep playing next week, it will become more obvious. Right now, I think a couple of spots are still up for grabs.' The Tour Championship in some ways becomes a final audition for Bradley, who is considering taking himself as a pick after finishing 11th in the standings. Thomas was No. 7 followed by Collin Morikawa, Ben Griffin, Maverick McNealy, Bradley, Brian Harman, Andrew Novak, Cameron Young and Patrick Cantlay. All of the potential captain's picks will be at East Lake next week for the Tour Championship. Europe's qualifying ends next week at the British Masters — players like Shane Lowry at the Tour Championship and Tyrrell Hatton at LIV Golf are not eligible for points. That makes Hatton at No. 5 a lock to be on another team. Lowry, who replaced Straka at No. 6, can only be passed by Rasmus Hojgaard next week. Luke Donald also has six captain's picks. ___ AP golf:

MacIntyre's frustration: Scheffler's long chip the latest epic shot to go against the Scot

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Robert MacIntyre could only applaud from the scoring room when J.J. Spaun wrapped up the U.S. Open with his epic putt at Oakmont two months ago. When Scottie Scheffler sank an even longer chip Sunday to take control of the BMW Championship, MacIntyre at least had a chance to answer back on the course — but by then, a tournament that had been slipping away from the Scot all day was almost gone. 'When he's pitched that in on 17 and then he's hit the perfect tee shot on 18, it's pretty much game over just then,' MacIntyre said. MacIntyre has been on the wrong end of two of golf's most memorable shots of 2025, although Sunday at Caves Valley he had himself to blame for being in that position. After a first-round 62, he shot progressively worse in each remaining round, capping the weekend with a 73 and losing by two strokes to Scheffler. A four-shot lead entering the final round was gone within five holes thanks to three bogeys by MacIntyre. 'I got off to an absolutely horrific start,' MacIntyre said. "I just expected jumpers on (Nos.) 1 and 2. (No.) 1, it's come out dead and then it's got a massive mud ball just short of the green. Hard to control the chip. But I just felt great going out today. I wasn't even expecting to be over par, to be honest. 'I was really expecting to go out there, foot down, and perform the way I have the last couple days.' That did not happen, and after Scheffler's birdie on No. 11 gave him a two-stroke lead over MacIntyre, a fan loudly heckled MacIntyre on his way up the 12th hole, telling him the crowd was Scheffler's and 'You ain't ready!' MacIntyre just stared back during that episode and wouldn't comment afterward on the crowd. Plenty of fans were respectful, but enough weren't to get his attention at times. Scheffler, playing in his home country with the Ryder Cup coming up in September, had plenty of spectators rooting for him — and a few probably had some money on the world No. 1. MacIntyre could be heard venting frustration after his tee shot went into a bunker on No. 14, but a birdie on the par-5 16th brought him to within a stroke. Then Scheffler made his majestic 82-foot chip for birdie on the par-3 17th. The crowd erupted into a 'U-S-A! U-S-A!' chant — then actually got behind MacIntyre a bit when he tried to chip in from the rough as well. If he'd been able to pull it off, he'd have remained one stroke back going to 18, but he wasn't able to match Scheffler's feat and settled for par. One fairly anticlimactic hole later, MacIntyre's frustrating round was done. 'Right now I want to go and smash up my golf clubs, to be honest with you,' MacIntyre said. MacIntyre was disappointed to miss long on a couple par 3s on the back nine, one of which he bogeyed. 'My golf ball was going miles today. I don't know why,' he said. 'I need to work that out. But when I got the game back in somewhat of a shape, I went over the back of the par 3s. I feel I've hit good shots, and I've gone miles.' ___
