Is Mohammad Amir going to play IPL next year?

Listen to article
Veteran Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir has expressed his hope of playing in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, revealing his desire to represent Virat Kohli's team, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
Amir, who has played 36 Tests, 61 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and 62 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), is optimistic about becoming eligible to play, citing his plans to secure a UK passport through his wife, Narjis, a UK citizen.
Speaking on a private TV show, Amir shared that if given the opportunity, he would not hesitate to seize the chance to play in the IPL.
'If I get the opportunity to play next year, I would definitely play,' he said, adding that RCB was his favorite team, making the prospect of joining them particularly appealing.
Amir's admiration for Kohli extends beyond their on-field battles. He recalled a gesture from the former India captain, who once gifted him his bat, with which Amir played some memorable innings.
'Virat gifted me his bat, and I was overwhelmed by his action. I've always been a great admirer of his batting, and he is a fan of my bowling. I played some good knocks with his bat,' Amir reminisced.
Ahmed Shehzad, also present on the show, endorsed Amir's potential impact on RCB, calling him a perfect addition to their side.
Shehzad stated, 'RCB needs a bowler like Amir to fix their bowling woes. They have a strong batting unit, but their bowling has always been a concern. If Amir plays for RCB, they will win the title.'
The IPL, which began in 2008, initially featured Pakistan players, including top names like Shoaib Akhtar, Shahid Afridi, and Sohail Tanvir. However, after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, Pakistani players were banned from participating in the tournament.
Though there have been occasional Pakistani mentors in subsequent editions, no Pakistani cricketer has played in the IPL since. Amir's potential return marks a shift in this longstanding absence.

Pak players to feature in Guyana Super League

Four Pakistani players — Sahibzada Farhan, Mohammad Nawaz, Khawaja Nafay, and Saud Shakeel — are all set to take part in the upcoming Guyana Global Super League (GSL), scheduled to be held from July 10 to 18. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has granted No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to allow the players to participate in the T20 tournament. Saud Shakeel will represent the Guyana Amazon Warriors, while Mohammad Nawaz and Sahibzada Farhan have been picked up by the Hobart Hurricanes. Khawaja Nafay has also been approved to participate, although the franchise he will play for is yet to be announced. The Global Super League, hosted in Guyana, will feature international T20 stars and is expected to be a high-profile event in the cricket calendar. Meanwhile, Pakistan's star batter Babar Azam has been signed by the Sydney Sixers for Big Bash League (BBL) Season 15, becoming the team's international signing ahead of the official BBL draft. Babar, known for his consistency and elegant stroke play, has scored over 10,000 international runs and is considered one of the best batters in the world today. As per BBL rules, each team can sign one overseas player before the draft, which is scheduled for Thursday, June 19. Cricket Australia has also released the first list of overseas players for the upcoming draft, which includes top Pakistani names like Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shadab Khan, Haris Rauf, and Mohammad Rizwan. Other international stars on the list include England's Sam Curran and Alex Hales, New Zealand pacers Lockie Ferguson and Tim Southee, Sri Lanka's Kusal Perera, and West Indies' young fast bowler Shamar Joseph.

Reimagining cricket

Listen to article History was rewritten in the ICC Hall of Fame on June 9, 2025, when Sana Mir became the first Pakistani woman to be inducted in the prestigious list. Her induction marks a significant step in breaking gender barriers in Pakistani sports and also signals renewed hope for the future of the country's cricket scene. Sana Mir debuted in 2005 and played 226 international matches, including 120 ODIs and 106 T20Is, during her 14-year-long career. She also led the team in 137 of these matches. At one point, she was the most-capped female cricketer in Pakistan. The ICC Hall of Fame includes a total of 15 women, with Sana Mir inducted alongside England's Sarah Taylor and South Africa's Hashim Amla. This achievement brings Pakistan's women cricket to the forefront, reminding the public that cricketing milestones are still being reached — even if not in the arenas they are most accustomed to. Simply Sana Mir's name plastered across public platforms helps challenge long-held perceptions about women's participation in a sporting culture so heavily dominated by men that their contributions are often left relegated to the sidelines. In her celebratory status, Sana proclaimed, "Tonight is not just mine. This is for every girl who picks up a bat or a ball in the street where they're told cricket isn't 'for them'." In a country where girls are barred from sports early on due to traditional reasons such as rigid gender roles, societal expectations and limited access to facilities, her words echo throughout the nation as a powerful symbol of defiance and possibility. Sana Mir's journey, from street cricket to the world stage, stands for personal achievement as much as it does for a landscape that is hopefully changing in the wake of prominent players. This is a national moment of pride that urges institutions, communities and families to reimagine a future where talent is not restricted by gender.
